Absolutely smoking version. One gift of better sound quality, or just older ears, is hearing Bob’s rhythm guitar. He paints on this one. As usual. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏
That's the magical mystical sound I fell in love with 50 years ago and no matter how crappy my player, no matter how beat up and worn out my records and 8tracks and cassettes became, that sound always came through. This is a nice walk down memory lane for me.
Bobby’s guitar adds a great dimension to this version - and the lock-tight backup vocals by Phil and Bobby really make it. These guys are fresh off recording American Beauty an Working Man’s…they knew they could sing - and they did!
When I saw the date I was thinking that this must be one of the earliest live versions while I read the description. I was very fortunate to hear live versions of the song several times in the 70s
Much gratitude Mr. Rothenberg! You can hear they're enjoying presenting this, trim execution + sprightly solo bits. I love they way it starts to "open" around the 9:30 mark...classic GD "the floor is open" to go any which way...then at 13:07, how Garcia plays that descending line that would show up later in "Help on the Way/Slipknot!", before they all return (mostly) to the EOTW harmonic terrain. Their musical/band maturity & telepathic interplay is on full display here--to the point that this "new" song comes off as something they've had under their belt for years. Outstanding!

I guess I never listened to this version that much before, I think its my favorite now too. So many unique things happening on this rendition. The recording, and the mix is almost like they made it for me. Pigpen had just died a few days earlier.
@@benhinds2971Pigpen died on March 8. Also, this is the first time the Dead ever played Eyes. This is a tremendous recording and a top notch version, agree! If you like the early arrangements of Eyes give 8/6/74 a listen; that's my absolute all time favorite.
Never. Speaking for myself, even as a young teenager, I knew from the start how special they were. I remember thinking how great it will be to tell my grandchildren about seeing the Dead, live, in person!! Lol! Same thing at all be Neil Young and Crazy Horse shows I've been to
At 4:06- listen to that crowd's minds being blown as they hear this for the first time! I feel this every time I listen & I've heard this ten times today! LOL
There are so many great performances of this ong, but this one is my favorite. I love how band just wades out into the song in the intro. Thanks for posting!
with a good set of headphones you will be amazed at the mix. its almost like the right channel is another track mixed in but its not.......its live. its the dead. hard to believe this version was played 50 years ago. wowza.
WTF: How can the first version be this perfect! I remember in the 80s the early versions of the new songs -- pretty rough. But this is stunning. Reminds me of the perfection of that first Rat from 71. There is a Greek myth of a goddess who was born fully formed from Zeus' head. Such is this. 2-15-73 is likewise tres awesome. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Michael. This version may be my most played GD song via YT (though Veneta's BirdSong is right up there). This one has forever remained atop my list of all time favorites of EOTW, along with two that I personally saw 8/6/74 and 9/3/77 (with that Jerry intro mimicking George Benson (to my ears). For what it's worth, this day had me at the Academy of Music in NYC, 3,000 miles away seeing probably the best version of Traffic.
Never thought of the George Benson connection before for Englishtown. But you are totally right. And the timing is right cause Breezin came out just a year earlier. The second solo from Englishtown has an unbelievable set of lightning fast chords near the end, followed by a beautiful lead line of pure jazz tonality.
One of the best if not the best Eyes intros. Weir managed to wear out his repetitive riff on the very first version because i don't hear it much after this if again
This is really the first live performance? Cool! I had always assumed that the modal jam that they'd go into afterward (does it have a name?) was there from the start, but it's not here yet. I think they must have gotten it pinned down pretty well within the next four to six months. (Now I have to go and see if I can find a first version of that!)
I had moments I felt that way until my brothers were killed in a car accident back in 81 when I was 15 I found they were the only sound I found comfort in
I was 15 at boarding school in Northern Virginia. Had never heard the Dead then. Now I wish I'd been in Palo Alto that day.
Imagine being there for the first Eyes
This day was my 16 birthday I saw them play this at every show in 73 and I saw 4 starting on 3/19/73
I've never been a deadhead but I kinda like this song.
No words can describe this version. The clarity is sick. The Dead just keeps going. The best band ever.
I don't think Jerry sounds sick. He just sings like that but he was in good health at this time.
Likely the healthiest of this generation! 🙏
This is the very first live performance of Eyes
Truly beyond description.
He means they are excellent!@@georgemetesky5519
Best song debut ever. Totally jazzed out. The beginning of a two year jazz era.
Absolutely smoking version. One gift of better sound quality, or just older ears, is hearing Bob’s rhythm guitar. He paints on this one. As usual. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏
Had this on cassette 40 years ago. Thank you!
I still have my cassette of 2/9/73.. one of many that received heavy rotation back in the day.. fantastic stuff
Fell in love with this song from the opening chords on Wake album. I was 14.
JORMA😊
Bob's Guitar work is simply Beautiful!
I was there. A great show with lots of new tunes. Always a treat. I'll always remember the version of They Love Each Other.
Amazing. I was born too late. This might be my favorite show.
They love each other nice and bouncy and with a Bridge . Always loved 72 73 74
Bobby has this perfect repetitive line that Jerry works around in the intro.. Chefs kiss
Grooving & Grateful for this
I was at that show! They were rocking so much one of the speaker cabinets fell off of the speaker scaffolding.
Ron pigpen Mckernan was the founder of the grateful dead blues with rock beautiful RIP Ron
In person I was there for the Brent years , what a beautiful trip!
My goodness there sound 50 years ago. Crazy clear and crisp, incredible!
Totally agree
50 and a half but who's counting?!

Jerry,as well as the rest of the band, was at the his best on this song. I could listen to this song all day.

bob weir is amazing. people think rhythm guitar is easy.
I agree. It’s a group effort for sure. Garcia is/was the fuel that drove the boys for so long. After all he is the Captain of it all
So many great songs debuted that day.

Thank you Kurt for posting this excellent version
Fuck, I love the Dead.
Favorite song... St. Joes 74
First wall of sound show.
Yes this is my favourite version of eyes💜 thank you for posting another one!

Looking at the second set list
Unbelievable marathon of core classics
Stuff we took for granted at the time
But no
They were that good

Dicks pick two 13:23 into the Darkstar you can hear eyes. Granted two years before they play it as a song but it's where the riff originated.
@@franklee6301 It's similar. Eyes is Emaj7 to A (no 7th). That part of Dark Star sounds like E/B to Amaj7
Dang! Boldly going where no band has gone before....or since.
Love it😍
Stellar!
14:38 - A little spontaneous riff that lodge in his brain somewhere and became part of Help On The Way.
❤
The clarity in the intro is pretty insane.
Thank you
Awesome and classic. Performance, sound, energy, A-One.
There are so many great performances of this ong, but this one is my favorite. I love how band just wades out into the song in the intro. Thanks for posting!
It's the first performance of Eyes

hard to believe this version was played 50 years ago. wowza.
Debut of this song and the wall of sound. First is sometimes best
No Complete Wall of Sound at that show. I was there.

Oh so nice. Thank you for sharing. 😊🙏🌹🦅
Playing in they own backyard. How lucky were we?
Right there! Best part of living in Palo Alto
This right here... I just subscribed because of THIS right here! ❤️🎶⭕️
Glad you like it.
Giddy up, thats sweet.
Jerry was in peak form on this one
Wow!
Thanks Michael. This version may be my most played GD song via YT (though Veneta's BirdSong is right up there).

just yesterday I commented on the scat singing to Phil's bass during Englishtown Eyes.

Great version! 😊
Love Jerry's rifts throughout, Phil's rifts, and Bobby"s strumming!
rifts? as in "cracks" or "gaps" or do you mean riffs? hard to tell with attempting to describe the Dead...I mean no offense!
@@J.G.M.Jr.I thought maybe they were fighting offstage 😂
Hey Kurt, you the man 🤪
One of the best if not the best Eyes intros. Weir managed to wear out his repetitive riff on the very first version because i don't hear it much after this if again
Jack!!!

Have you found it?
First "Eyes," really? Damn, right out the gate they play with bravado and gusto. Too much!
1st one in front of a commercial audience. I'm sure it was technically somewhere around the 200th time played...
Birthed fully formed, rippin' and flowin'...
This just topped Englishtown in my Eyes😂
What can we say?
Statements just seem vain at last (mine do, anyway) ❤⚡💙
RIP died March 8 1973
Cant go wrong with a 73 EOTW
Ever wonder if psalm choice and tour date, is the modern for told sequel3h?
🌘👁️🌒
Love hearing Bill Kreutzman cruising. Nothing against Mickey Hart but they were a tighter band at this time without Him.
Papa
Wrong venue. 2 9 73 is roscoe maples pavilion
Excuse me? Roscoe Maples Pavilion IS AT STANFORD.
Q: What did the Dead Head say when he ran out of weed? A: "This band SUCKS!"
Lol, favorite joke of non-head straight-ass crackahs
I had moments I felt that way until my brothers were killed in a car accident back in 81 when I was 15 I found they were the only sound I found comfort in
