  • I had a major issue with the heater within my new large Ultra Sonic Cleaner. Please make sure to check and see if your heater automatically shuts down when not actively in use.
    Technology can be fun but please be safe and take the proper precautions when working with any of this technology.
    Thanks for watching!

    Here is a tip. I have multiple ultrasonic cleaner's and what I've learned is to place my parts whether it's resin 3-D parts, motor sport carburetor type parts, or firearm parts and there specific cleaning solutions into either a stainless steel or plastic container. The container is then put into the ultrasonic cleaner that has water in the tank. The water will transfer the frequencies directly to the solutions in the isolating container. After you're done cleaning the containers are easy to clean and or store. I've even used red plastic cups. Oh and you can use several smaller containers with different solutions at the same time. By the way make sure the level of the cleaning solution with the parts is just a little higher than the water level in ultrasonic cleaner.

      This is what I do. Saves on a lot of cleaning solution and also you are dealing with smaller quantities of resin contaminated fluids. "Going back to the bucket method." jeesh. throwing the baby out with the bath water.

  • @Muhfynmann
    @Muhfynmann 4 года назад +18

    Best way to use one of these is to always put your part in a secondary container with your cleaning solution and then place that in a bath of water. You can then use IPA this way.

  • @ChandlerCollins
    @ChandlerCollins 4 года назад +7

    Hey Jesse! Have run into this before because it's so easy to leave your cleaner on when you're getting ready to cure a print-- a good way of avoiding this in the future is to have something like a lamp wired up on the same power strip as the cleaner so that if the lamp is on, the cleaner is too.
    You can then use the power strip as your cleaner's power switch and if you see the lamp on before you leave, you've messed up :)

      Francis Arthur To be fair I use mine for multiple jobs but I’m extra careful with IPA that I don’t put the heater on, and with detergent I always have to reset the heater when I switch it on. Mine always defaults to off after powering off. After having a major house fire caused by an FDM printer setting on fire when in standby maybe I’m just a bit more cautious 👍

      @@chrishamlet3470 The method I use, couldn't that work for you?
      I fill mine with 5.5 liter water and using a thick IKEA bag with double zip-lock with IPA.
      I put the UV resin object in the bag and leave it to hang in there with the flap underneath the lid.
      So you can do a long time with the same water and it can save a huge amount of chemicals and you don't have to clean and empty the machine all the time if you put something else in there. Just a new bag.

    I'm always extra nervous about my printer and Ultrasonic. After I take my prints off the build plate, unless I'm IMMEDIATELY printing something else, I turn off the power on the printer.
    When I take my parts out of the ultrasonic, I turn off the power because I don't want the LED display or other indicator lights to burn out prematurely.
    Shut the machines down before leaving the room, and it's all good. Thanks for making these videos! Uncle Jessey's recommendations were what set me over the edge to buying an SLA resin printer, and I don't regret my decision!

  • @Mod3DAspectPrinting

    So, I have the same Ultrasonic Cleaner that you have and it stays plugged in. The power switch is not flipped on unless it is in use. For the heater to be on, you must set the temp and push the "On/Off" button and the heater comes on with an indicator light just to the right of the digital display (on the left) showing it is either on or off. It sounds like you had the heater enabled, ran the ultrasonic function for some prints and forgot to turn off the heater. Getting used to new pieces of equipment is part of the process and I have enjoyed your videos and reviews, but; this video should be more orientated towards "Don't forget to turn the heater off".

  • @KaelumYodi

    You got extremely lucky. There is a warning that comes with all heated ultrasonic cleaners:
    MAKE SURE THERE IS LIQUID IN THE CLEANER WHENEVER POWER IS APPLIED
    The ultrasonic transducers will literally burn up if they are turned on w/o liquid in the tank. The heater is located on one side of the tank, and the thermistor is located on another side of the tank. If there isn’t enough liquid in the tank, the heating element will stay on indefinitely. The cleaning solution will be exposed to extreme temperatures, which can create toxic fumes/cloud, which is what happened to you. Normally it won’t catch fire, but it could.

      my ultra also only turns on the heat if i tell it to turn on the heat. yours is always on ? open it up and cut and cap power leads to the heating element. the ultra sonics in most cases are more than enough to heat it up. in fact I have to run my cleaning in cycle times because the ultra alone will over temp the liquid (don't want to pass the tg temp of the resin parts) though this may not be an issue with a vat that large!!
      YOU MAY however want to start from scratch. I just got the anycubic wash and cure station. Good warning. Many units are designed to be able to pre-heat. If I can add two points (as a manufacturer and distributor of ultrasonic washers, up to ones that clean truck engine blocks, plus a 3D printer myself),
    1) Please don't use flammable or combustable solutions with an ultrasonic. They typically are not rated for this.
    2) Even running the sonics can raise the temperature. If you're only doing short (say, 5 minute) bursts, it's likely not a big deal. But long runs can create heat. You're putting energy into the fluid with the sonics.
    And get a cover! Evaporation happens fast.

    Feature not a bug. It takes a hour and a half for the water to get from room temp to 45 degrees, and most people want to do several batches once they're up to temperature, so the heater stays on because it can't assume you're done with it once the first cycle is done. It's on you to check the control panel and turn the heater off when you've completely finished with it.

It does have overheat protection like thermal fuses but they only fail after the tank becomes dry and that can take weeks depending on what you use for cleaning. A mains timer that switches off in the evening is a simple way to avoid this.

    Uncle Jessy, thank you for all you do. I use mean green based upon your recommendation. I however, don't use it directly in the cleaner. I have a plastic container I fill with mean green, then sit it in the ultrasonic cleaner filled with water. The ultrasonic functions through the water, plastic and mean green to clean the resin off my models. But the ultrasonic cleaner only ever has water. This makes it easier to clean as well since all the goop is contained in the mean green in the plastic bin. I never use the heater function. If your heater was running while turned off but plugged in, that sounds like a serious defect.

    What did you have the heat set to? The sun? For it to boil off all the liquid in the green cleaner over night must of had it on 80C. I run mine at 40C and never have this problem even weeks at a time. Don't blame the unit for user error.

    • @PokketGM

      A few things for you;
      1) He specifically says he isn't blaming the machine. He knows it's user error.
      2) It doesnt matter what temperature you start the heating at, over time, the temperature will dramatically ramp up as the electronics inside heat up. It can easily get to ridiculous temperatures if left on too long.

    • @cmulder002

      @@PokketGM there is a timer limit on how long the ultrasonic part works and the increase in temperature is not THAT much (10 c is the highest i say on mine) this is the result of a relative high heat (relative to the boiling point of the used chemicals) for a long time.

      likely just the thermal fuse; look for a round thing size of a coin or smaller stuck to the tank or heating element with 2 wires connected to it. Remove those 2 wires to measure if the 2 connections still have a short between them (it should have) if its open then change it with a new one and likely the cleaner will work again.

    Missing temperature cutoff and missing temperature controller. You should always take apart cheapo heater systems to make sure there is a temperature cutoff and that the thermostat exists. If that was IPA you'd be looking at a vapor explosion. Even if it is just the ultrasonic function a temperature cutoff on the system to stop short circuits in the transducers from heating up the bath is still a must.

      @@Parasite98 the fuses looks like www.marbeck.com/international-dryer-thermal-fuse-generic-40113801/ ; most are mounted straight on the tank without the bracket though. Think the biggest problem is that industrial tools are being sold to untrained consumers who assume they are as simple and save a s a refrigerator. Btw the fuses are there to prevent fires not to avoid boiling off whatever is in the tank. Besides the fumes there does not appear to have been a safety hazard in the clip shown here.

    I have been looking for a better ultrasonic cleaner than the harbor freight one that someone bought me for Christmas one year. I think I found one I like but the good one are expensive so I've been hesitant to buy one.
    Anyways... I researching one I thought of the looking at the immersible type. It's where you take the transducer and place it in any take you want. If you are looking for a large volume ultrasonic cleaner I'd think that the immersible types would be best. Only downside of them is they are a lot more expensive, so I naturally filed that option under the list of things I'd buy if I would ever win the lottery.🥴
    You know if you can salvage the tank on that unit you have you could probably use it with a immersible ultrasonic cleaner. That is is you could afford one of those.

I've been thinking of buying one to set all of my different chargers on one single outlet and when I want to charge a random battery I put the timer on like 2h and after that all of the chargers gets cut off of power at the same time.

When printing larger it's about 60/40 failed build plate adhesion and support failure. I angel the prints and still nothing. Do you have any advice on this. Resins I am using are the anycubic green and elegoo red.
