Stuff like this is why Stephen is no ordinary tonight-show host.
Soundole VGM Covers Kelsey Grammar also read this as Frasier in the series finale.
Exactly what I was thinking- you don't get this elegance and depth with the Jimmies!
Soundole VGM Covers i wonder that too

Cosmic Soda In the words of Helen Mirren "fuck off."
The strength of a man who is willing to cry at poetry on national television cannot be overstated.
Strongest are the men who are not afraid to cry...
Gay
You right ❤
guest poetry readings should be a recurring segment
Helen Mirren is such a queen!! I want every audiobook narrated by her
Federica Santos me too!!!
I'd gladly listen to her read the menu at Waffle House.
Federica Santos I was thought the same
Federica Santos Actors usually have a beautiful voice & fantastic speaking skills especially British. Helen certainly has a captivating voice & accent.
tintinesk5 - um....eeewww.... Oh yeah, that's not creepy at all. :/
Manly tears were shed by Colbert.
I love how Colbert whisper an almost inaudible "Thank you" at 01:45
Class, grace, intelligence, and dignity personified.
Seamusin
And Helen is pretty damn awesome too!
Here is the text:
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
Taylor Craig Newbold somebody pin this at the top!

Taylor Craig Newbold Well done! Thank you!

First kiss of 2018, finally!
This was just beautiful.
Helen is always trying to kiss Stephen 😂❤️
Can you blame her 😘?
yeah i felt that too
Why wouldnt you want to kiss Stephen?
Naaay... she knows he'd like to kiss her. Heck am 22 yrs younger than stephen and I'd like to kiss her 😂
i would too tbh
Helen is a treasure. Also loved how you could hear a pin drop on that stage as everyone was silent just listening to her read such a great piece of literature.
Ohh... What a stunning lady...
She's amazing.
I read aloud this exact passage from Ulysses at my Dad's funeral: he was a WWll veteran.
Good choice of poem. RIP
👍🏻🦅🗽🇺🇸
"To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield"
She is a treasure.
So she didn't even know the text before she started reading and still knew how to deliver it so perfectly. That's a true actress.
Poet. This has nothing to do with acting, but poetry! My grandma had such ability and I used to tell her, this talent and interest will die with you. Bless her soul, she was brilliant and I've always felt sorry to have no glimpse of that.
Ulysses is well known. Are you really sure she has never read it before. She probably read it years ago. But those lines never lose their meaning.
Especially since she went to a British school, where they actually TEACH real literature. I am sure she knew of the poem, but maybe never recited it out loud. That is very different than just reading it. Isn't she just marvelous.
And maybe had't read it in years and now it holds new meanings. That's often what returning to good literature is like.
Everybody knows that poem. Ofcource she did too. I think she would know some of the famous poem belonging amongst civilised people. Its art of its finest. She just red the one Part of this much longer masterpiese.
Helen Mirren needed to be my Literature professor
Keri C ur dad gay
Just saying she WAS your prof., I needed to be in your class.
This woman is a fucking treasure
The power of words and the glory in the telling.
And this is why he's the Emperor of Late Night. Anyone else would just make her do some silly sketch.
James Calbraith urdadgay
And he tears up as she reads. What a lovely man.
Classy, intelligent, and respect for the intelligence and maturity of his audience, the range of guests that enlighten, share their gifts, and articulate riveting and entertaining fascinating knowledge. No other talk show compares to Stephen's. Life is a bit better because of show.
Only on this show will you have a legendary actress reading real poetry
..your work, Stephen, of noble note, is being done......helping us seek a newer world.
That little pause before “whom we knew.” I got the whole sense of a long life, and his memory of former glory. Like a faded, ancient actor remembering that one time she worked with Brando.
He was probably thinking about his father
I'm the same as Stephen....I'm crying as well. Helen Mirren has such an amazing voice, tone, and grace while reading poetry (and through life)!
When you don't even have to hear the words themselves to know their meaning from the delivery of an angel...
Madness by Design An angel, indeed. The Queen of angels.
He was straight mourning our country 😢
No other poem has ever affected me quite like this one. Hearing the beautiful Helen Mirren read Tennyson's words is so powerful.
I really didn't understand the poem as it was being said, the first time I heard it here; but thanks to commenters, who've written out the poem so we could read the words and another who explained what the poem means (at least from their perspective), I feel like I understand it a lot better now. I believe that I'll be returning to this video, a few times ;) Her delivery is unquestionable.
Amazing. Persistence, pushing through the struggles of life, forging new pathways that one day we may achieve great things for ourselves and others. This poem is simply amazing and something that I needed, personally, in my life.
Poetry is often like that, they reveal themselves slowly, by hearing them repeatedly, by discussing what've heard.
And then, some poems are self explanatory. Like the one I heard about underpants in an old folks home...
Rose's are Red
Violet's are Blue
Ethel's are Green
azdgariarada, Ha! Or the one about a young man named McNameter
I like your comment. I think poetry is meant to be revisited again and again, u find something new each time. And Dame Helen was the hook. She’s brilliant...luv Stephen:)
WOW. Yet another reason to adore Stephen. And Helen.
Beautiful. She is brilliant. I also recommend watching the clip from her BAFTA Fellowship award presented to her by Prince William. She concludes the speech by reciting Shakespeare. It’s moments like these that make me so appreciative of talented wordsmiths and talented actors.
Bravo! And thank you too Mr. Colbert!
Stephen is not the only one crying.
What a moment. She is an incredible actress. And the obvious mutual admiration they share is sweet.
Not a dry eye in the house, as this goddess of an actress, weaves her magic… on the fly.
Great is Hellen Mirren.
Please make this a regular segment!!! It engages the mind and moves the heart, and it lets the guest shine. Beautiful & Quality material.
This was so awesome. Shows the depth of Colbert. We should have great poetry read more often by great actresses and actors. Be awed and inspired. This plus comedy feeds the soul!
“that which we are, we are”
Ms Mirren, Mr Colbert, you adorn creation.
Wow... that was both beautiful and powerful. I felt that one. Well done. I shed a tear as well.
When I’m her age I hope I look half as beautiful as she does!! 😍
Amanda B Be true to who you are... And you will be your own beautiful self.
Amanda B, I actually don't think she looks good for her age in the traditional sense -she's only 10 years older than Ellen -...yet, I think she's gorgeous.
Me too... and I’m a man
I just hope I’m half as cool.
@Hayley The Best. How is she supposed to look? Every person ages differently - it depends on so many factors like lifestyle, genetics, ethnicity, etc. She's in her 70s - she looks good period.
Lord, how I do love that woman.
This particular poem strikes a chord in me particularly thanks to ‘Frasier’. Frasier recites this poem at the end of their final season and none of any poems that I have read has hold so much meaning. Such a profound and beautiful poem. It’s wonderful to hear again today. My day is done. ❤️
Love that poem, and that rendition. She is a treasure.
❤️ her voice. 🙏🏻
Dame Helen Mirren - our British national treasure. Love this great lady.
I write poetry, nothing like this. It was beautiful. Love Stephen Colbert.
First of all-- it's Tennyson!!!---
But Helen Mirren reading ANYTHING is enough to make me choke up!!! Just seeing her makes me breathless!!
Helen Mirren is a treasure. And, thanks to Stephen for bringing this.
Thank you Stephen for making this happen!
A much needed inspiration. True touch of class. Thank you!
I got chills all over multiple times. Well done.
She is a beautiful human being
Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
The woman is simply special.
A treasure and a unique one.
Not only you, Stephen... not only you.
Do you.... get payed to comment on youtube videos or something?
deadeaded do you comment unhappily, for free?
New Message I'm not crying...
*sniffles and turns around*
She's aging like a fine wine -- gorgeous. Also I would buy any audio book she narrates.
Yep. Made me cry.
Helen Mirren is a treasure
So powerful....really amazing
She's A-mayyyyy-zeen! That was gorgeous!🙏 Good pick Stephen 😊👋👋👋
Even the thumbnail for this clip is amazing, classic, and articulate.
i feel every bit of this poetry
i’m tearing 😢
Beautiful.
I will watch this many times. What a poem. What a performance.
We did this poem in literature
It's beautiful
I recommend everyone checks this out in more detail
I love Helen Mirren's rendition as well as Judi Dench's rendition in Skyfall, along with the background score and the visuals of Bond running. One of the best moments in the whole franchise!
Came here for the kiss, was not disappointed.
In Portugal, we love this poem. And Her.
Beyond wonderful. Thank you.
I have never heard the poem before but for some reason I bloody cried and isn’t she just wonderful the conviction and feeling that she put into the reading was so powerful I loved it
BRILLIANT.
She officially broke me to tears at Mar 9, 2018 at 11:15pm EST 😉🤠💖 (Hi Helen!)
She's a legend and icon.
That people, is a great actress. Helen Mirren is one of the greatest actresses in the world.
The poem is amazing
Beautiful, loved and blessed & deep seated TRUTH
Thank you! 🙏 What a treat.
That was just...Wow!
That was beautiful.
This is beautiful! A gorgeous reading by Helen and she made him cry!
"I can kiss you now" 😂❤️
Even at her age, helen mirren is gorgeous! Great poem, love tennison, this one in particular!
she nailed it
You should hear her do the epilogue from Shakespeare's as you like it (1978). That was my first introduction to her as an actress - I was about 8 at the time when I saw it on TV. Amazing then, amazing now.
thanks for letting me know that
Wow... so powerful.
Thank you!
Just...beautiful.
I want Helen Mirren to read me a bedtime story now.
Thank you Hellen . For not just reciting this deeply thought and heart provoking poetry but, for providing a rich memory for Stephen and engaging hearts that have nver heard these words before.. Thank you 💖💖💖💖
great reading Dame Helen! thank you Stephen - you are a man of depths!
Such an amazing moment I feel grateful to witness.
That was beautiful. I must have more!!!
I’m not crying, I just have dust in my eye 😳😰
Maelstrom Magnet
You're chopping onions. Your eyes are very sweaty today.
@@feebeedoc78 when she said "SMITE the sounding furrows, for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die."
Quality CONTENT
That was lovely, thank-you!
wow! nothing like a classically trained actress reading the work of one of the greatest poets of all time to get the old tear ducts moving. I would ADORE to hear her read Ozymandias by Percey Shelley. That is one hell of a poem.
Have you read the other version?
no! do enlighten me!
I love this so much!
Helen is a treasure.
Amazing. I have memorized most of this poem over the years and do become very emotional even when I say it to myself in the quiet of my mind. It is incredibly powerful if well read.
Bello, muy bello.
Ride of the Valkayries (I'm not spelling it right) makes me cry. It is the greatest piece of music ever written.
