That's rough. Conceptually, it's kind of cool - the competition part. But she's rough as a host and her VO's drag. It's harder to carry the energy in the studio...but even in person, you can tell that she's having to drag herself through some of this. Who knows...maybe it's the InBev pressure weighing her down. It just feels forced a lot of the time. The NY one - The log thing...well known from the Nordic brewing tradition. The kveikstokk holds the yeast between brew sessions. The log is just a strange adaptation by someone that is just hilarious... "I'M CONFLICTED!" Yeah, buddy. Yeah , you are.
I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment. Not everyone is meant to be on camera and it's tough to communicate excitement in the brewing process...which isn't exactly glitz and glamour.
I agree while it is dry ,no need for hate they offer her a gig and she took it and got paid and in general VICE is a pretty solid channel outside of this beer show
Your right! If you dont plan on learning anything and just love shows about beer its OK. She is kinda easy on the eyes! Brew dogs like you said is great!
Nice video Chris, I love your honesty. On the other hand how did you like the Noble Mosaic Shower. I picked up a few bottles from Noble when I was in Socal last as well as there Hostel Intent. They just did a colab with Fieldwork out of Berkeley CA called Power Glove that was really good and they have another one called Punch Out that is drooping soon.
Lol well said could not agree more about this show! Their beers at best r mediocre, InBev thing makes sense didn't understand why I would see such wide distribution out here in California.
Their beer is ok..they have a triple IPA called The Wolf Mother which is pretty good. I used to hit up Golden Road before they sold out. The show did suck and I think they should have judged these brewers based on the style of their beer. Could have had a best IPA brewer or best Stout brewer etc. I think you should have your own show on TV Chris. ROCK ON MAN!
I was tipped by a colleague for the show, but I think this is better :) don't think I'll give it a try. Regarding InBev: same is happening here in the Netherlands with Heineken, buying up breweries and so extending the standard 'Heineken craft beer card' for all contracted caterers, pubs etc. I've noticed you have some Belgian beers in the shot? Are those well available and affordable in the USA? I'm thinking of making craft beer trades with USA to get some awesome beers who are not/hardly available here, which obviously works the other way around. For example, it's not hard to get a Westvleteren Xll around here. Any tips/comments are welcome :).
1st off...GoldenRoad beers are not great (in my opinion) Weak IPA, bleh Brown Ale.... Vice reached out to several homebrew clubs in the SF Bay Area... Our club didn't want anything to do with it. Cheers
Sounds like you are describing Modern in St. Louis. They also added to your equation, start a war with Side Project; copyrighting their name and using a similar logo design while ~3 miles apart from each other.
I have only watched the first episode so far. Was hoping for better. My best explanation is that it is like a car wreck that you just can't tear your eyes away from. Was thinking the same thing when she was bitching about the guy's pils not being clear. I too miss BrewDogs. I think in their case, maybe they have been too busy with expansion, to do the show....not sure.
brew dogs awesome; Zane lamprey? awesome. your rant awesome. I only watched the Hawaii one cause it's my home, but it sucked. thank you. Let's get some more Hawaii craft brews out there. Or at least have Maui brew distribute all their Stone sh*t to all the islands. keep it up. Waikiki brew co aint bad, as well as, always and probably the best in HI- Big Island Brewhouse. Let me know what you think?
Ha. This show is on Viceland, which is basically a cable channel about smoking weed. Luckily, Vice News on HBO is still hard hitting. That said, she is terrible and the show is completely uninspired. NOTHING touching on current craft community status or the brewers making waves. She sucks. Show sucks.
Totally agree, the NY ep I feel she picked that magic log weirdo because he was such a stereotypical BK hipster instead of the beer she really reacted to which was that everything bagel beer. She seems like a self loathing beer geek and I use the term beer geek loosely.
I think this is very similar to what happens with tattooing where a world full of styles, interesting characters, and history is taken over by corporate interests and gets reduced to manufactured drama, and idiotic bullshit.
OMG the girl who does the who does the show is so UNBELIEVABLY boring. like.. get excited woman! you get to do beer for a living. I practicaly fall asleep everytime i try to watch the show
Boycott InBev products! Even if it's a good beer, still boycott it. Their beers are getting too much shelf space at the grocery stores, crowding out local craft brewers. This would make a good video, Chris!
YUP...IT SUCKS ...there have been so many bad beer shows,,sorry. but .those brewdog guys sucked too...annoying as fuck .If you watch Bar Rescue or Pawn Stars you understand why and how a show works . This is like a kid from the local high school AV department running around with camera with no idea how to structure a show . . Mashed Potatoes...yes they would be insulted ...lol . I honestly do not understand how shows like this survive,,,jesus...fucking depressing thinking that other shows got dumped to pick this . How bad could they have been????!!!!! You have a great channel..keep it up ..cheers !
tell us what you really think of Vice!! lol Sad that they turned "homebrewing" into a real shit TV show. I did homebrew for a couple years and it is not easy to make great beer. Thanks for the review on the show!!
When I first started drinking craft beer, I started with Golden Road because they are probably the most accessable local beer in Los Angeles (i.e. they're in every grocery store). However as I learned about and began to enjoy other local breweries, (Smog City, Monkish, Three Weavers, Bottle Logic, etc), I soon realized how uninspired, and unremarkable Golden Road was. I've never had a Golden Road beer and said anything other than, "Yup, that sure is beer."
Meg Gill is a business woman, not a brewer. Sometimes I wonder if she signed something when the brand sold to AB that obligates her to do these kind of things. AB recognizes that as a young woman she has multiple levels of appeal that you don’t normally have in the male dominated craft brewing scene. Whatever... she’s leading the fight against the real enemy, the wine and spirits market. 🙄
Enjoyed your rant and passion. Unfortunately, I never heard of this show and because of your rant, I wanted to see for myself. So...subversive advertising at it's best I guess.
I liked that show too (brew dogs) but it was a very american style of show, a whole lot of repetition. Aimed at people with the attention span of a goldfish.
After watching this I searched out episodes of Beerland. Meg is void of charisma, drab and a very loose concept for the show. I'm all for females representing the beer world in mainstream media but couldn't they find someone better than her? I'd much prefer to see a couple of Beertube's own like Nitch or Sarah Warman heading up this type of show.
Exactly, at least it wasn't some fella with a turn-ups, no socks and a top-bun. I'm a fan of the programming on Munchies but the level of wankiness is sometimes unbearable.
Thank you for bringing up the criticism of the cloudy pilsner. That was the point in the show that it lost me and I knew I wouldn't watch it again. The fact that the guy made a lager on a homebrew scale is impressive enough. Homebrewing deserves a way better outlet. I'm sure there's a better host (male or female) out there that can bring across the passion that homebrewers have for their product
I miss the Brew Dogs show as well. I really wish we could get a proper craft beer show, or even a comedy/drams set in small brewery. It may not have been perfect, but I really enjoyed Drinking Buddies, and would like to see something like that put into a weekly TV series.
I had their wolf among weeds IPA and for all the hype the show gave golden roads, I remember saying, eh its ok but would I get it again for 11.99 a 4 pack, NO!
Thank you!! I thought it was just me. I was excited to see this show, then watched the first one and felt the same way. Craft beer deserves a better version of this show.
This review could have been so much shorter, as in, "Its Inbev, hate it." Discounting the consultation of a current/former GI brewer simply because it is Inbev supports that angle. While Meg could use some polish in front of the camera, I found the critiques just fine. I'm bored with the shows that are just all rahrah scripts (but there is plenty to improve on these ones). A lot of homebrewers are making Pils that are much clearer than that beer without expensive equipment. There is nothing wrong with suggesting he think about it. Yeah, the show is pretty much a GR commercial and that gets old rather quickly. But if any kind of wide appeal is targeted, the human interest side of going to a party off the grid or surfing is expected. The .00001% of the population that wants 22 minutes of drilling down on someone's HERMS system wont support the show growth. I could have made this comment a lot shorter too....Its Inbev, you need to hate it. Keep the reviews coming. I'll watch.
I agree that homebrewing deserves a better show. That said, I can see tons of wannabes standing at bars around the country saying "Dude, have you seen Beerland?" "Yea man, great show, ya know I've been thinking about doing the homebrew thing myself, just not right now... don't have time". I have to admit she definitely picked up on something she'll capitalize on, but I'm not gonna add to her profits. Also, the comments they included in the show on each individual beer were ridiculous: "it tastes like drinking a pine tree" "it's a total nerd beer and I love it" "it's really refreshing"... I don't think I heard a single comment that would have actually given me a clue what the beer tasted like. Of course, homebrewing myself I've realized you'll hear the wierdest comparisons when people try your beer. Someone called a stout I made while I wad in school "a smoother version of Guiness". How the fuck is that even possible?
What is going on here, I just watched about 5 minutes of beerland and I felt like I was in 8th grade watching a boring old documentary!!!!! ZZZZZ This is horrible. You are 100% correct, this show is lame.
World class assessment, m8. These are my exact thoughts and opinions on the show. I appreciate your channel, too, homie!! Keep hitting us with them vids!
You don’t need expensive equipment to make clear beer as a home brewer, you don’t even need much time. Use Whirlfloc, get a great cold break as quickly as you can, cold crash when fermentation is complete and use gelatin, set the keg in the keezer and DON’T touch the damn thing...I have clear beer in two or three weeks after fermentation is complete. If ya lagered a Pils for even just a month, it would be very easy to get crystal clarity. The show’s not that good, but Meg was right to ding the clarity. You don’t make clear beers buddy?
"Hey.. let's go.. off into the desert.. and ride some ATVs, and drink some beers, and listen to some punk music. It's like WTF?!?!?!" LMAO!!!!!! I spit my beer out when he finished saying that. Toooo good. Couldn't agree more about the show. Cheers!
Ok so I never heard of the show and I went in with a bias after watching your video but I couldn't agree anymore with you, lol she sucks as a host, the show just doesn't hold my interest even though Im very fascinated with beer and beer culture...Im surprised none of those hipsters were making their own version of PBR...lol
you know what guys, I think she has a f****** hangover! like all day everyday! her brain is mush! we all know that feeling, Monday morning when you're trying to talk to a customer... get some sleep Meg!
I enjoy it, actually. Nice to see actual homebrewing being celebrated. Definitely better than the formulaic and contrived Brewdogs & DFH shows, which were more about promoting their own products.
Just finished watching all four or five shows,I liked it! Made me want to grab a cold beer every time! Sure, Meg is an airhead and comes off condescending as fuck but I think it was kind of entertaining. I actually like Meg's personality, she doesn't come off as whoreish, which I respect since she's obviously very attractive. If the show keeps promoting Golden Road it is because the beer to win the competition was to be brewed by Golden Road, I think it makes sense to keep bringing up Golden Road. I've had several of the Golden Road beers and visited the brewery, neither are super impressive but worth checking out.
"Gill continued, “the definition (of craft) should really be about "protecting the quality" so homebrewers "can't brew a bunch of sh*t in their bathtub and call it craft." For one, homebrewers don’t make beer in bathtubs, sh*t is brewed in toilets, and homebrewers don’t make craft beer, they make homebrew."
I totally get everyone is going to have opinions about a topic they are passionate about. Personally I enjoyed it as the light entertainment that it is. The show is throwing a wide net, which is what you need to do to have large groups of people interested. Not everyone will have the knowledge of a lot of you hard-core brewers. I literally mean this in a positive way; why not use your army of beer heads to make a version you would like to see? Happy brewing dudes.
Just finished my second episode of this show and yeah, it sucks pretty bad. This is really not a show about beer, its just a political statement. So far I've heard complaints about the new administration and some anarchist dude, also, a gay woman that brews beer. Whatever... I'm pretty much done with this show.
intro is cool, it's a lil more subdued, I'm sure it will grow on me. i didn't know anything about beerland, and, golden road is solid beer, i haven't drank one since i can remember, if that says anything. haha, lot's of amazing beer gets my attention. cheers
I am in the strong minority but I really like this show. Keep in mind that i have zero interest in the minutae of beermaking. I thi k the show is well shot and ENTERTAINING. Critics should shoot their own show if they think is is so easy and can be better executed.
Everything you said is 100% on point. I, unfortunately, have tasted Golden Road beers. Typical AB-InBev swill. Don’t bother.
I agree completely, absolutely ridiculous
Its a great ideae with terrible execution
I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment. Not everyone is meant to be on camera and it's tough to communicate excitement in the brewing process...which isn't exactly glitz and glamour.
I agree while it is dry ,no need for hate they offer her a gig and she took it and got paid and in general VICE is a pretty solid channel outside of this beer show
thanks for the shout to the beerland episodes...will try to watch.
Cheers!
Your right! If you dont plan on learning anything and just love shows about beer its OK. She is kinda easy on the eyes! Brew dogs like you said is great!
ya shes pretty but soooooooooooooooooooooo boring.

They just did a colab with Fieldwork out of Berkeley CA called Power Glove that was really good and they have another one called Punch Out that is drooping soon.
Honeslty I thjought the mosiac showers was ok. Not great but solid. Review coming soon
Fair enough, check out Fieldwork if you get an opportunity.
I agree homebrewing could use a better show....problem is, there are none.....
Lol well said could not agree more about this show! Their beers at best r mediocre, InBev thing makes sense didn't understand why I would see such wide distribution out here in California.
thanks to inbev
Their beer is ok..they have a triple IPA called The Wolf Mother which is pretty good. I used to hit up Golden Road before they sold out. Could have had a best IPA brewer or best Stout brewer etc. I think you should have your own show on TV Chris. ROCK ON MAN!
Meg didn't know what Belgian Candy was!! That ended it for me!
hahahahaha
I was tipped by a colleague for the show, but I think this is better :) don't think I'll give it a try. Regarding InBev: same is happening here in the Netherlands with Heineken, buying up breweries and so extending the standard 'Heineken craft beer card' for all contracted caterers, pubs etc.

Funny rumor was InBev shut down Brewmasters with DFH only to put this nonsense out. Agree BrewDogs needs to come back! Cheers
Solid rant. Do more of these. Let the hate flow through you.
Sounds like you are describing Modern in St. Louis. They also added to your equation, start a war with Side Project; copyrighting their name and using a similar logo design while ~3 miles apart from each other.
hahah will do man. Great Jedi reference
I have only watched the first episode so far. Was hoping for better.
My best explanation is that it is like a car wreck that you just can't tear your eyes away from.

Vice died when Gavin left. Nothing but beta-male leftist bullshit now.
I agree!
Totally agree, the NY ep I feel she picked that magic log weirdo because he was such a stereotypical BK hipster instead of the beer she really reacted to which was that everything bagel beer. She seems like a self loathing beer geek and I use the term beer geek loosely.
Yeah just bad
I think this is very similar to what happens with tattooing where a world full of styles, interesting characters, and history is taken over by corporate interests and gets reduced to manufactured drama, and idiotic bullshit.
OMG the girl who does the who does the show is so UNBELIEVABLY boring. like.. get excited woman! you get to do beer for a living. I practicaly fall asleep everytime i try to watch the show
Yes Yes Let the hate flow through you. I feel the same way you do Chris . i cant wait to see how big the train wreck is going to be
haha Jedi!!
will have to check it out, im sure it will be as bad as GR's crappy overpriced beers.
Yeah its probably par for the course
Watched 10 minutes of the Hawaii episode...unbelievably terrible.
Boycott InBev products! Even if it's a good beer, still boycott it. Their beers are getting too much shelf space at the grocery stores, crowding out local craft brewers. This would make a good video, Chris!
and its only going to get worse
YUP...IT SUCKS ...there have been so many bad beer shows,,sorry. but .those brewdog guys sucked too...annoying as fuck .If you watch Bar Rescue or Pawn Stars you understand why and how a show works . Thanks for the review on the show!!
haha sorry
Hipster Fueled Bullshit....LMAO...Great stuff man...I have to watch BEERLAND now.
haha yeah maybe I sold it more then hated on it
I agree. The host has a dry personality. Almost like she doesn't want to be there. The guys from Brew Dogs were more entertaining.
Ive never had anything from them so I cant really comment fairly but that seems to be the consensus about them
Meg Gill is a business woman, not a brewer. Sometimes I wonder if she signed something when the brand sold to AB that obligates her to do these kind of things. AB recognizes that as a young woman she has multiple levels of appeal that you don’t normally have in the male dominated craft brewing scene.

True!
Enjoyed your rant and passion. Unfortunately, I never heard of this show and because of your rant, I wanted to see for myself. So...subversive advertising at it's best I guess.
Yeah my fault sorry man. Hey at least its free online
Go what Zane Lamprey's show Chug on Netflix. A good show!
I think I lost more brain cells watching that show than I ever did drinking shitty beer in college!
I liked that show too (brew dogs) but it was a very american style of show, a whole lot of repetition. Aimed at people with the attention span of a goldfish.
I watched that show. Fucking terrible. The yeast from the log in central park.....!!!
haha yep
One more reason I love when you post dude! This is funny AF
I agree man I get why it was herr and not some dude with a big beard and tattoos but she did not represent women in craft beer for what they deserve
Exactly, at least it wasn't some fella with a turn-ups, no socks and a top-bun. I'm a fan of the programming on Munchies but the level of wankiness is sometimes unbearable.
Mash Potato personality, ditto.
just watched the 1st ep.. and it is hard to finish you are right her personality is like a card board box
I wish the show would concentrate on making the beer and not yuppies hanging out around a bonfire and drinking beer.
haha yep
Craft beer is the hipster fuel.
VICE always manages to piss me off with their choice of ironic reporters or hosts.
hahah
Thank you for bringing up the criticism of the cloudy pilsner. That was the point in the show that it lost me and I knew I wouldn't watch it again.
The fact that the guy made a lager on a homebrew scale is impressive enough.
Homebrewing deserves a way better outlet. I'm sure there's a better host (male or female) out there that can bring across the passion that homebrewers have for their product
i am in 101% agree with you , 'HOLY SHEET THAT IS THE BEST BEEER EVER' - nah, f*ck that phrase
I miss the Brew Dogs show as well. I really wish we could get a proper craft beer show, or even a comedy/drams set in small brewery. It may not have been perfect, but I really enjoyed Drinking Buddies, and would like to see something like that put into a weekly TV series.
I miss BrewDOgs as well. Dont think we will ever see more of that show considering the channel is off the air now
Can't wait to see the winners brew a South African hopped IPA
Yeah it sucks
haha yep
I agree.. the idea of the show sounds great but the execution leaves me not really wanting to watch another episode.
YEah its really bad
I'll watch.
apparently you also have to have a subscription to the network on your cable/satellite provider. edit: luckily the episodes are on RUclips.
Yep that is how I watched them
You pretty much sums it up. I only watch it for Meg Gill.
Pardon me, but do you have Prince Edward in a can? Nope! But I got some unfiltered Enjoy-by 7/4/17 in cans!!!!! :):):)
"No shit Meg, he's a home brewer" - Best Chris quote ever.
That beard is looking absolutely stellar!!!
Is BrewDogs the best beer show? Or maybe Brewmasters?
yeah she is very boring. She had a swimsuit on and i was disapointed with that.
hahahahaha
Think Vice is on FX
Viceland is its own channel.
imagine that. Chris got a name wrong. 😑
Brews Under Review Viceland is its own network. The actual show called "Vice" is on HBO
I have no clue what cable provider the Vice Network is on but I know they have a news shopw on HBO
LMAO!!!!!! I spit my beer out when he finished saying that. Toooo good. Couldn't agree more about the show. Cheers!
how you liking that Noble Mosaic showers?
if I was a home brewer and she asked me to try one of my beers i'd piss in a glass and tell her it's a new style that all the kids love
haha
What episode was the Pilsner?
Ok so I never heard of the show and I went in with a bias after watching your video but I couldn't agree anymore with you, lol she sucks as a host, the show just doesn't hold my interest even though Im very fascinated with beer and beer culture...Im surprised none of those hipsters were making their own version of PBR...lol
hey man I dont make this stuff up haha.
Comparing her to mashed potatoes is not giving mashed potatoes the credit they deserve. Cardboard is more interesting than her.
yes. the host is terrible
Brew Dogs made craft brewing fun and interesting. Never heard of this other show, but it looks like I will not check it out. Thanks BGN!
you know what guys, I think she has a f****** hangover! like all day everyday! her brain is mush! we all know that feeling, Monday morning when you're trying to talk to a customer... get some sleep Meg!
hahah yep

It's such a trainwreck, I couldn't look away!
I enjoy it, actually. Nice to see actual homebrewing being celebrated. Definitely better than the formulaic and contrived Brewdogs & DFH shows, which were more about promoting their own products.
Well, now I have to go on and watch that show! I hope it's as bad as you say it is! X-D
Trying to watch the first episode now...I feel like this is a high school drama project and it's 90% scripted
hahaha
Brewdogs was 1000x better.
Agreed!
I get the Vice channel on my cable. I haven't seen the show but your commentary doesn't encourage me to do so.
Just finished watching all four or five shows,I liked it! Made me want to grab a cold beer every time! Sure, Meg is an airhead and comes off condescending as fuck but I think it was kind of entertaining. Shows better than this video
Sounds like a real shit-show...no wonder Golden Road has fancy looking little beer vans.
Whatever... I'm pretty much done with this show.
intro is cool, it's a lil more subdued, I'm sure it will grow on me.
i didn't know anything about beerland, and, golden road is solid beer, i haven't drank one since i can remember, if that says anything. haha, lot's of amazing beer gets my attention.
cheers
Saw a macro ad on this video. Gotta get that fixed, Chris. lol...
Cheers to brew dogs! They bring the beer community together with some great content.
Keep ranting, you're good at it
"Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

Brew Dogs was amazing! Miss that show.
A few of my friends appeared on the Hawai'i one.
Looks like a New Age Model of Promotion to Me
I am in the strong minority but I really like this show. Keep in mind that i have zero interest in the minutae of beermaking. I thi k the show is well shot and ENTERTAINING. Critics should shoot their own show if they think is is so easy and can be better executed.
Just watched an episode. Not too bad. You should see the World of Beer: Drink It Intern content. Yikes.
Darwin's Beer Reviews its bad lol
I'll need to watch more and do a video on it.
Cheers!
HAHA yeah I watched your video on that but havent watched it yet need to do that
Check it out! Cheers!
I feel sick just hearing you talk about the show!
haha
Somebody should tell her, "SHUT UP MEG"! As Peter Griffin would :)

Can't be as bad as the one with the Dogfish Head guy. Awful!!!!!
