      If you loved this sequel you need to read king of thorns.I know prince of thorns is a lot to take and Jorge is terrible but the second book is far superior from the fisrtl.Jorges personality goes from an evil psychopathic monster who you can't read to a still villainous character who grows and has qualities and regrets. You definitely need to catch up on his other series

      This is what I came here to see. Sometimes I wish Prince of Thorns wasn't so divisive because it keeps people away from the rest of the series, where KoT and EoT are both amazing books.

    Btw the sequels to Prince of Thorns are also brilliantly written. To this day those books remain my favourite of all the things Lawrence has written. I do understand that you have a need to read about a at least slightly likable character and in that respect Jorg leaves quite a bit to be desired. I do however feel that I sound point out that Jorg does grow over the series. He never becomes a saint, but he does start to understand that he is basically insane and not capable of love or kindness and decides to use that to start protecting that things he has grown attached to.
    He becomes quite reflective on his passed deeds. He does not feel remorse for them, but he does recognize that he should not be the evil brat he was before and tries to do some “good”.
    The best descrition i ever heard of his character arc is that he goes from Ramsay Bolton to Tywin Lannister. Mind you, Jorg never becomes a nice guy but his understanding of the fact that he is too damaged to be repaired is something that I found beautiful.
    At that, the prose in the series is just beautiful

  • @Valiguss

    Something people don’t talk about enough is just how iconic these characters lines are, every single line that comes out of most of the characters is quotable the one that I think it’s sad nobody references is when kettle asks zole what they are made of and she responds with sweet mercy

    Speaking of emotional fantasy, Daniel have you read anything by Guy Gavirel Kay? I fell in love with his triology The Fionavar tapsetry as a teen, and later the book Tigana. The Fionavar tapestry is very inspired by Celtic and Arthurian myth but the characters are great and there's a lot of melodramatic emotional parts. Highly recommended.

    Ooof, one more for the TBR.
    I've finished Lawrence's Broken Empire Trilogy and found it to be 'okay', even though on paper I should've loved the series. Following villains around is one of my favourite pastimes. I didn't like Prince of Fools, which is set in the same world. The book never managed to grab my attention and I didn't care about the main character at all.
    I think I'll give Red Sister a go next year, maybe another world setting will finally warm me up a bit more to Lawrence. While reading the Broken Empire Trilogy I really enjoyed Lawrence's character work with Jorg but something always felt off and I never got as excited about continuing the series as I got when reading First Law, ASoIaF and some others.

    I just finished this book and I have to comment, again. I will start by saying that overall I did enjoy this book more than its predecessor but I also had mahy problems with this one. Like Red Sister, the pleasures did outnumber the pains, marginally and I will read the finale. I am somewhat disappointed in that they keep shrinking where most authors grow in length to proceed through sequels. Mark is giving us less and less that is new and worthwhile in each installment. I will give my criticisms in the subsequent replies to this.

    • @llywyllngryffyn8053
      @llywyllngryffyn8053 4 года назад

      The Good: Mark continues to write well sculpted prose and characters who stay consistent and interesting. He crafts some clever plot points and situations that mingle with his uniquely odd but very creative world-space that he carves out for this work. Once again, I admire the world building he began in Red Sister though he did little to expand upon it, it does set the fabric of the story and is inescapable in this sequel so it is worth praising again. There are new characters added in this story but most of the cast returns from the prior book and I also have to compliment the way Mark began the story... It starts with a recap of important information rather than having the characters go through tedious exposition to retell readers what they might havt have read or remembered from the first book. It is delivered in a nice summary up front and then we pick up the story almost from the final pages of the earlier one. The first chapter is almost a second epilogue to the first book.
      That is all of the good words I can lay at the feet of this book and it is why I will read the finale...

    • @llywyllngryffyn8053
      @llywyllngryffyn8053 4 года назад

      The BAD: While Mark created a unique world to backdrop his story and put a lot of detail into it, closer inspection reveals how these details are quite superficial and poorly thought out. Situations referenced in the previous novel are revisited and this time they are expanded upon, a little. However new information that implies information that would have been available in the previous book, as it is history that is known, should have changed the events of the previous book. Many writers fall into the trap of writing 'ancient history' after they write the middle of their story and thus they create plot holes. (Medichlorians anyone?) Very little of Marks world grows in this book but what is added as superficial references and background color made me consider more deeply what Mark isn't adding in or describing. SPOILER ALERT:
      This book revisits the Ship Heart notion from the previous work. In that book, we are told that 4 races came to this world to settle it and they needed one antoher to make it work. They had to mix their blood in order to survive. Each of these races came with many ships and each brought ship hearts with them. Each ship heart is attuned to a specific racial power set. It can be used by others but works best for their own race. The one from Sweet Mercy was a Quantal heart and it was basically an orb of immense power... (Infinity stones anyone?) It wasn't the best plot device I've read but it worked and I moved on to the sequel. Now though, in this book we get told that the hearts were here before the settlers came and it is what drew them here. The hearts drew them here... So these ship hearts, aren't ship hearts but they can influence you only from a couple dozen yards away but they can somehow draw entire civilizations to cross the vastness of space? Also in the first book, we are told that the settlers built the Focus Moon, the reflector dish that keeps the ice at bay. Now we are told that the Ark, which is a remnant of the previous race that lived on this world, not created by the 4 races but left over from the 'Missing' race, can control the moon... This would be like finding a relic under ponpei that could control NASA satellites, right? Also in this book, we are told that pulling 'threads' is delicate and subtle and once you do it you can only pull on a single thread once. Those words are used, only pull it once. Yet in the same book, it seems that they pull such things more than once as a girl who you love to hate as soon as she shows u on the page just happens to be able to 'change the mind' of a High Inquisitor' while he is clearly hearing something that he obviously doesn't agree with to suddenly wanting to agree with it. Then he is freed from that when the thread work is undone by another person... So it is possible to undo someone else's work. OK, fine. Then the original girl goes back in for a second bit of the apple and it starts to work until the large bull of a friend, Darla, bonks her on the head and stops her from interfering. Until Darla acted, "Joeli' was able to repull on a thread she had already worked.
      I also want to adress the idea that Nona 'Earned Her Powers' which is total bollocks. She is born with powers in her blood, as a girl of less than 10 years old she was able to instinctively manifest magical wolverine claws that can cut through any non magical material and kills a 'wizard' and a score of grown men... all this untrained. While Mark tries to write in little, occasional, weaknesses like 'Oh you can't walk the path too often'... she does, 'oh poor Nona is hurt' she still manages to kill trained assassins and every injury she gets is just minor baggage. There are no stakes for her since we have these Book End moments in the story to show us her alive and well in a future time... so we know she is going to live. Sure, she earns a few scars along the way but they don't amount to much because the bad guys always want to 'save her for later' and savor the moment. We have the hero in our dungeon so lets not kill her, or cripple her, or rape her or maim her, instead lets taunt her with a torture device that causes 'immense pain' but no physical damage. So we can torment her but she can still walk away from it later on. Let us allow her to escape because we have to. ... and I've got one more section to write...

      The UGLY: I couldn't help but notice that this book, like its predecessor is a militant feminist fantasy where the only men seem to be idiots, white knights, or toxic masculine scum. That theme carries on into this book. There is also heavy LGBT themes like the last one, which I find disturbing, not for being LGBT but because of the fact these girls are still children. Mark had them sleeping together as young as 12 years old and since Nona isn't sure how old she is, I'm guessing that in his author notes, she is actually younger. I found more disturbing the amount of pain and torture he was writing involving such young girls and the vicious bloodthirsty nature of most of them. Nona is a literal psychopath with no real remorse about butchering humans. Yet she is also full of 'love and loyalty' for her fellow sisters? A man was twisting her friends arm behind her back and she slit his throat... This book also had the requisite ball smashing one would expect from Feminist revenge porn. At least he isn't describing bloody emasculation but I expect it in the third installment.
      The Emperor is supposedly the most powerful man in the empire but he apparently knows nothing of what is clever sister is doing nor can he do anything to stop her as he is just a male patriarch whose time has come to be replaced by the aliance of his sister and the neighboring nation's 'Battle Queen'. Down with the patriarchy, right?
      Very few beats of this story were not predictable though there were some. The formula from the previous work is repeated though; once Nona gets to the convent and settles in... she starts off healthy, gets met with injustice, beaten by bullies, faces crime or disgrace, beaten more, punished more, collects more injuries and then triumphs. She leaves the convent, faces some hardships, gets injured, uses all of her resources and then, gets saved by a friend. Then someone close to her dies and she can suddenly summon more resources to defeat the problem... This is basically repeated in book two with an addition saving by a new friend. Nona makes friends of her former enemies in both stores, so I expect her new friend will die in book three to set her off in the last moments of the last battle.
      I was disappointed in how little 'Review' Daniel was actually doing but then I saw a video that showed him tell us how he reads... He reds so much, so quickly that he really doesn't truly absorb it so it is no wonder that he is taken in by it. It seems like the Wheel of Time is the only work he actually reads with the dedication to understand and appreciate it properly.

    Love the review, but I have a WoT question I hope you can answer. Why do people pronounce Egwene Ee-gwayne? It doesn't make sense to me so there must be some sort of reason for it. I say Egg-when, which matches the way the name is written.

    You should consider reading Bound before Holy Sister.
    www.goodreads.com/book/show/42865580-bound?from_search=true&qid=3fMYSs1LVv&rank=6
    You can certainly skip it but with how much you liked Grey Sister I think you would find it worth the effort.
