  • Premier Doug Ford's government is prepared to wage war on the City of Toronto if it proceeds with plans to decriminalize minor possession of hard drugs. This, as Premier David Eby's government in British Columbia is all but trashing its plan to do the exact same thing. What's the right move, amid an opioid crisis that's killed 43,000 Canadians since 2016? We get into it (36:25) in this episode, in addition to a whole bunch of your feedback on city building, cancer, journalism, research funding, and the pains of parenting.
4:56 | Who would have thought rezoning bylaws could light a fire under so many people? Ryan and Johnny circle back on Calgary's marathon (sixteen-day!) Council meeting, and your response to our May 15, 2024 Real Talk Round Table on placemaking.

20:11 | RIP Dutchy. Ryan and Johnny celebrate the life and career of Darren Dutchyshen, dead at 57.
30:12 | Why are so many young people dying from Cancer? Ryan reads an email from Real Talker Harry.
36:25 | Ontario's PC government says it'll fight Toronto tooth and nail if the city proceeds with plans to decriminalize possession of small amounts of illicit drugs. We revisit our recent conversation with Guy Felicella and Mo Amir about B.C. recriminalizing possession, and how the two stories fit together.

1:00:45 | Maybe it's not such a bad thing after all for Premier Danielle Smith's government to review how research is funded at Alberta post-secondaries. Real Talker Cyril makes the case.

BC now gets a 1000 overdoses a week ! Think of all the resources it takes to answer those calls.

Pretty sure that thats what BC originally said to Vancouver. The tighter you hold onto sand the more it squeezes out.

There's a big difference between safe supply and safe substitution. Safe supply provides people with their drug of choice. Substitution doesn't do that. Methadone has been diverted for decades. People sell it for heroin. Trade it up. As BC did with dilaudid. It never was safe supply. Of course it would get diverted. Youth get hard drugs from siblings or friends. I know as I worked with heroin for nearly 18 years. Over 2,000 people aged 14 up.

You can only fight density for so long in these cities. Gonna have to go up if you want fast transit to work. Especially to reduce carbon footprint of these concrete jungles. These neighborhoods are sprawling out too far. Going to need that farmland we are losing to feed people sooner or later. If you want a small town feel, gonna have to move to a small town and live and work there. My opinion for what it’s worth.

The world is a big place. Now since covid is long over cheap international food is flooding our stores. Fifty cents for cucumbers, a dollar a pound for eggplant and peppers. All from mexico. I remember a Florida farmer saying that he could provide all the chicken for the continent.
But while I argue with obvious racists, and know that immigration has largely saved the maritimes, even I think these policies are just nuts. Its clear the liberals will lose just on immigration but don't seem to care. Over at the Toronto Sun the guy had a story about job numbers 'not being as rosy as they look', which is fine, but the comments about that were "we need to overthrow this government". For job numbers not being as rosy as they appear? Even liberals are like "wait, WHO voted for this?"
