  • Have the federal Liberals taken over the Alberta NDP? Could a Naheed Nenshi leadership win spell the end of the so-called "worker's party"? Hours after pulling out of the Alberta NDP leadership race, labour leader Gil McGowan joins Ryan in studio for a campaign post-mortem. Later in the episode, photojournalist Amber Bracken tells us why she's choked at the state of journalism, and why the general public needs to start giving a rip.
    3:35 | Gil tells us why he withdrew from the NDP leadership race, why he's concerned about the party's direction, and whether or not he's endorsing a candidate for leader.
    43:40 | Amber Bracken says more Canadians need to care about troubling trends in journalism. The World Press Photo of the Year Award winner talks about her fired-up Twitter thread on World Press Freedom Day, and takes us into her photo essay in Alberta Views on a 10-year-old fundraising phenom.

    Albertans will remember that the four years of an NDP government was a complete dumpster fire. Given the ideology of the NDP now, the province couldn’t survive another NDP government.

    I don’t think Liberal Takeover is an accurate headline and is possibly inflammatory…a “united progressive” takeover might be more accurate as this could include centrists and former PC voters.

    Bit disappointed in Gil, here, and I wrote the guy an email telling him how impressed I was with his campaign just yesterday. For one thing, if he had an issue with the entry fee, he had a chance to stand up and say so. He was in the room when the rules were drafted. Second, he says he wants to build a big tent party and dismissed Sarah's climate policy ideas during Saturday's debate as not being election-winning. Today, he says we need to be a "full-throated NDP," but adds, "we need to attract the old PCs." To me, it seems like he's jumping from one side of the fence to the other to make an argument and I'm not impressed. He's one of my favourite political personalities in this province but I smell sour grapes. PS: Buy the Adobe stock image, Jespersen :)

    I wish I could get the full full story. My question is this:
    If Calgary's right-leaning City Council voted in favour of sending a letter to the Province re the agreement with workers, isn't the Mayor compelled as the head of Council to write that letter on Council's behalf? I mean, a councilor can't write it.

    Anybody that noticed during the NDP government in Alberta that it wasn't exactly a 'workers party'. It essentially was a liberal party, in other words, business friendly but not totally in the pocket of big industry. Of course it depends on the industry, like in the states the two parties are essentially corporate parties with different social policies, largely directed at the other partys demographic.
    This happened LONG ago, in Nova Scotia about three elections ago they elected an NDP government for the first time, it balanced the budget in ONE term, then was voted out because the young people that had supported the NDP found it was nothing but business friendly lite.
    All these parties are essentially corporate parties. As others have noticed, the problem with unions is they represent unions, meaning, the workers who are CURRENTLY there. Meaning htey DON"T represent other workers. Thats sort of where the NDP is.
    It wasn't a big surprise that Notely got along with Trudeau in getting federal money and EI to laid off workers. That was 'for workers', of course people are mistaken in thinking politicians are doing it for some grandiose love, they do it for votes. Trudeau had just won TWO seats in Alberta and was smelling blood in the water. Notely knew she only won on a technicality and that the right was likely going to reconnect - one way or another.
    Of course I think ALL parties get along fine behind closed doors doing the work for corporations. As Mark Twain said, "if our votes actually mattered, they'd never let us do it"

    I am a strong union supporter, member, and have been executive member. I also support Nenshi. I understand people's concerns about the party drifting. I think a couple of things, the party should market itself as a party to address issue's of concern for all Albertans (including work class Albertans). Also, I feel, a part of the NDP win was a protest vote against the Conservative party at the time. With the current demographics in Alberta, I think Nenshi making the party a little more centrist will help win the vote of Albertans.

    You better believe NDP has lost their way They no longer represent farmers and labour unions This new generation of NDP belong to the Rolex party

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 25 дней назад +1

      The NDP never represented Farmers, even when it was the CCF the farmers had their OWN party.
      Alberta has always had the lowest union membership in the country, the current NDP simply owes its existence to the absolute vilification of the liberals since the eighties. They've largely always been the same party, just like BC never really had a conservative party but the liberal party was largely the same thing til recently.
      And you are talking about almost HALF the population, so that kind of talk is as crazy as in the states where they try to say 'well, republicans are THIS' or 'democrats are THAT", your talking about HALF the population which is basically entrenched only because of the first past the post electoral system.
      But of course the NDP is more urban, and urbanites are, well, more urban, at least the ones who bother to still vote. They often have higher salaries, union membership is largely tied to the public sector which is largely teachers and nurses which are mainly women.
      And of course thats becoming even more the case. This is probably the MOST important time for the NDP and no doubt there are lots of 'shadowy figures' lurking around because the world is changing, its becoming even more urban and the NDP got almost HALF the votes and barely lost to a UNITED right.

      @@mikearchibald744 Yes the UFA was a political party that formed the government in Alberta from 1925 to 1935 They were instrumental in getting the NDP started in in Saskatchewan and Alberta

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 25 дней назад +3

      @@peterbutz642 There is VERY little overlap after 1971. Those Socreds and United Farmers largely became conservatives. The NDP was a marginal party until 2015, there is really no historical precendence there at all.
      In the 86 and 89 there was a small upswell for the NDP, but then they disappeared practically altogether til 2015.
      The NDP has been that rolex crowd for quite some time. Hell, that was Jack Layton all over.
      The tragedy is that their policies are generally both the most centrist and the most supported by the canadian population-of course its easy to SAY shit when you aren't in power. Provincially NDP governments tend to be as business friendly and best managers of economies. That was largely true of Alberta as well, if people paid attention to actual POLICIES, most of the ones Notely was taking were supported by Kenney. He was largely helped by the growing social media storm and poor economy, which is always a government killer.

      @chadtosh6831 If Albertans are all for the lies, corruption, very costly debacles, core services suffering, and an utter contempt for democracy that Danielle Smith and the UCP are providing, that's setting the bar pretty low.
      When it all goes sour, they have nobody else to blame but themselves.
      In fact, it has gone sour, ever since the UCP got into power, by questionable means, in 2019.
      If Danielle Smith and the UCP are better than any other political parties in Alberta, it shows that the voters have political ignorance.
      Actual Conservatives know that there is nothing that is Conservative about the UCP, and there never will be.

    IMO the ndp in AB lost its way a long time ago. This is evidenced by the extreme policies before, during and after the Rachel Notley leadership. The same can be said about the political culture that has evolved in BC after many years of ndp governance and corruption that more closely resembles communism than any perception of democracy. And sellout doublespeak Singh has ensured that ndp will no longer be a serious consideration anywhere in Canada because of his support which enabled the most divisive and destructive PM in Canadian history to destroy Canada;s culture, for personal enrichment. Those who survive Trudeau's unbelievable reign of tyranny will remember who made it possible. It's very sad as some family members were involved in the suffering which caused them to form the CCF party in SK and they moved to BC in the late 40's . Most of the causes surrounding the birth of the CCF came as a result of hardship and suffering of farmers and workers during the great depression of the 30's. That seemed to take a back seat when the name was changed to NDP and that was when they lost their way.

    The NDP get their marching orders from Jagmeet Singh. The NDP have turned their back on the working class many years ago. They have become a party of extremists. The only worker the NDP stand up for is the union workers. Everybody knows that hard work in a union will never get you up the ladder any faster, it’s strictly seniority. We had the NDP experiment in 2015. We all know how that went.
