In my last video I broke down a major Final Cut Pro 10.8 bug where trying to adjust elements in the viewer window was causing Final Cut Pro to hang or freeze. Editing text with a title tool, using the Transform Tool to adjust scale or position - these adjustments were freezing Final Cut.
In this video I'm going over what seems to be causing this to happen while, unfortunately, not coming up with a root cause that allows us to resolve the issue. I think this is definitely going to need a software update to fix things since I've already tried every troubleshooting step that I can think of per Apple's support document linked here: support.apple.com/en-us/105044

UPDATE!!!! So it seems the issue is specific to the newer Magic Trackpads and the trackpad on Mac notebooks.
If you disable "Tap to click" in Settings < Trackpad you can interact with elements in the Viewer window without any issue.
If you disable "Use trackpad for dragging" in Settings < Accessibility < Pointer Control < Trackpad Options you can drag elements in the Viewer window.
So, yeah. I'm guessing enabling the ability to drag and drop effects from the Inspector onto the Viewer window may have caused this bug?
Of course none of this affects FCP if you're using a Magic Mouse, Mighty Mouse or 3rd party mouse.
This also doesn't affect FCP if you're using the older AA battery-powered Magic Trackpad.
Of course turning off these settings makes me HATE using the Magic Trackpad - haha - so I will leave them on and connect a mouse or use the Inspector controls until this bug gets fixed with a software update or Apple lets us know what we can do to resolve it on our own (that's probably not gonna happen).
What the holy hell? Wow great detective work, Matthew + Community. Appreciate your efforts in trying to ferret out the problem and the cause. Good luck with next steps. We use a ton of titles (mostly Motion VFX) and the “click on viewer” method of changing parameters - so not going anywhere near 10.8 for now. Thanks Matthew.
Tap to click? That's the most Windows thing you can do to your Mac. You should be ashamed of yourself. 🧐😉
@@glatznatureproductions Yes, if you’re heavy into MotionVFX like I am it makes many of their effects impossible to use if you’re only using a Trackpad. I have my Might Mouse connected so I can forge ahead with 10.8. Definitely wait!

You'd be surprised who gets hired. I (with years of experience) got hired next to people with ZERO tech or troubleshooting experience. Basic stuff like isolating hardware/software issues easily get overlooked.
Thanks for the report Matthew! I have to say, underwhelming updates for FCP is one thing but lately Apple keeps breaking stuff with every update in FCP. It used to be one of the most stable apps ever and now I keep discovering bugs all the time. Especially when editing and handling audio.
I do hope FCP11 will be the one…
I know how frustrating it is. I will say that they've been fast to release those quick incremental updates to address a lot of the reported bugs. Not perfect but at least it's not taking months for them to release bug fixes.

There are a fair few bugs I have also noticed in 10.8 One of the annoying bugs is that audio/music tracks will go red even when the track has been imported into the library, even some of the sound effects will also go red. Another bug is the delay between the magic keyboard and magic mouse to the timeline and viewer, so annoying. I am using a Mac Studio M1 Max on Sonoma 14.5. Apple PLEASE FIX!
Thank you so much!! I had this same issue and it was driving me mad with final cut freezing whenever I tried to drag something with my Macbooks trackpad.. Now I tried the same thing with the Mx Master 3 mouse and Final Cut doesn't freeze anymore!
This is helpful info! I've had a few editors say they are not having this issue when editing with their Trackpad so trying to figure out what the difference is between setups is quite the challenge!
I am also getting the same bug with my intel MacBook Pro, while adding text layer on the video. Thanks for the help. After using wireless mouse, I am at least able to edit the text in the viewer without freezing. Once again, thanks 🙏🏻

No problem! Switching to a mouse is definitely the workaround for the time being... I'll be keeping my Mighty Mouse plugged in until there's a prescription from Apple or version 10.8.1 comes out 🔪🥦

Using my M1 Mac in Clamshell with a Logitech mouse and trackpad. I just added Motion VFX mLowers and I was able to manipulate text in the viewer with both Logitech bluetooth mouse and trackpad. Just saw your post... lol Thanks for being awesome and solving issue for the community! 🙏🏼🎥

I'll start with the Bottom Line: When I disabled "tap to click" on my Trackpad, everything started working as expected. I can edit text and transform. Thank you, Matthew. The long story: I've spent more than 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care Support, and the guy couldn't figure it out. He's checking with engineering again, then calling me back later today. I have no 3rd party stuff and reinstalled FCP, cleared out caches and jumped through all sorts of hoops they recommended. Nothing. When the guy calls back, I'll tell him it's the Magic Trackpad's tap to click. Who knew? Hopefully, the engineers hop on this ASAP ... before my thumb wears out from clicking. LOL!
This was such a huge help in further isolating the issue! Yes, it seems that with Tap to Click and Use Trackpad for Dragging enabled, something gets broken in Final Cut Pro. This issue doesn't occur when using a mouse or the older AA battery-powered Magic Trackpad. When Apple calls you back, mention what all of us have discovered in the comments here on my videos and that this may in fact be a bug in Final Cut Pro that will require a software update. I can Tap to Click or Drag no problem in every other app and in macOS so it seems to be specific to Final Cut Pro.
My guess is that adding the ability to drag and drop effects from the Inspector to the Viewer may have broken something with how Final Cut Pro "reads" inputs from the Magic Trackpad in the Viewer window when these settings are enabled.

He's going back to engineering with this info and anticipates Apple running a diagnostic on my computer so they can see what's happening behind the scenes. In the meantime, I'm using a regular mouse. SOLVED - For those on Macbook Pro using the track pad, go to SYSTEM SETTINGS, navigate to TRACKPAD, under PICK & POINT, uncheck TAP TO CLICK. It will address the issue with the freeze when you attempt to edit text on screen in FCPX 10.8. I hope this helps someone out there, it worked for me.

Ahhhh, yes, the interface, I use an outdated Wacom art pad, no issues. I use an older intuos, I found that the pen tool works great and your palm won't mess with the tool unlike the new Wacom pads where the whole thing is ultra sensitive with the touch feature. I use Wacom as I have two 27inch screens and a 42 inch client display, the pad helps to consolidate all the screen real estate to one thing. Great to move the mouse exactly where you need it without picking up the pen or mouse which you would have to do before you move off the desk. Good job on the fix!

I plug the track pad into USB and try the settings you suggested in accessibility, works. When I turn on dragging, bugginess returns. Running on M1 Mac with Sonoma 14.5
It worked for me if I used the Transform Tool but it would freeze if I tried to change the text on a Basic Title… 🤔
This explains it! I use Trackpad and have all the dangerous settings you listed enable (including 3-finger dragging). I have two Magic Trackpads (one for editing in the bay and one for editing from my couch) but they're both the old AA battery models. Phew!
But! I wonder if the lagginess and odd system crashes I've been getting might have to do with Trackpad? 🤔

@@matthewTobrien Honestly, I don't know where to start. Audio plugin reviews and news fare way better on my channel, so I've been putting off making a video I want to make: "The Apple Silicon Mac Studio is A Failure." Sounds harsh, but it seems as if the system has some kind of fatal corruption in its USB bus. Apple has increasingly demanded that we externalize EVERYTHING. Which is fine, but ever since getting this M1 Mac Studio, I live in a state where opening a video with QuickTime might boot the entire system to the login screen. Or, while I'm working off of it, an external nvme might disconnect. Or my second monitor might freeze, while my main stays active-and if I don't disconnect the secondary, I'll be booted to login screen. I hit forums and see others experiencing this, I've taken it in to Apple Stores twice, but it doesn't seem to be a universal issue by any stretch, their Apple software diagnostics report everything working fine. You're on a Mac Studio. You don't experience any of these problems with connected devices?

I don’t mean to offend, but we used to call it a “crash”, not a “freeze” :)
This is a bug clearly causing FPX to crash.
If we could maneuver around the freeze and get back to a working state, then we could call it a freeze (an maybe move on).
No offense taken. In several tests if I left FCP alone for 5+ minutes it would recover and I could proceed with my work (as long as I didn’t try to manipulate elements in the Viewer window). Does that make it a freeze? Perhaps. Perhaps not. 🤷♂️
@@matthewTobrien oh yes, that makes it a freeze. Although a painful one - 5 minutes is very disruptive, but it is better than losing important changes in the project.
I'm having an intermittent problem when skimming audio tracks using my arrow keys. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, it's annoying.
If you had Apple's old Mighty Mouse helping solve this mystery on your Final Cut Pro Bingo Card congrats!!! Now I know we don't have a solution for this issue, but we at least know what specifically is causing all this freezing and hanging in good ol' FCP... Let me know in the replies / comments what you've discovered as you continue to troubleshoot this issue.
I actually got to try the Mighty Mouse for the first time this month, because my college still has them plugged in to M1 iMacs, we have the Touch ID + Trackpad Magic Keyboard that was included, but no magic mouse. I really don't mind them too much since you get a lot of extra macro buttons so far.
Hi, I discovered something very interesting!
With the option «use the trackpad to drag», the masks «Transform», «Crop» and «Distort» with the MacBook trackpad the application crashes, while they work correctly using the wireless trackpad of the old model (the one with the batteries).
Correction:
The «Sample color» mask in the «Green screen Keyer» effect with the older model wireless trackpad works correctly.
I think it's a bug in the 10.8 update.
Not macOS.
In fact everything works fine with all other apps.

Great diagnostic work my friend! We should put you in touch with Apples testing Dept. I get it that they want to protect their intellectual capital but I've been retired now for 6 years but when I left, All of the companies I worked for have had the ability to perform automated testing. For a trillion dollar market cap company to continue to fall prey to this is what I might consider Tim Cooks biggest fumble. He's now succeeded in building way too expensive hardware that has great difficulty in running its apps flawlessly due to testing that borders on inept. Sorry for the outburst I'm trying to figure out why my $5000 m3 macbook pro keeps fully draining its battery overnight when it's completely powered down. Ugh.

I’m good at it because Apple trained me how to isolate an issue! Haha. I used to be an at-home Apple Support Advisor 🤣 But yes, if there were a way to more fully test the software before it’s released, that would be incredible. The best we can do for how is use RUclips, social media and Apple Feedback to let the team know and try to help them get an update out as soon as possible. The last few have come out within 3 to 4 weeks after major bugs were reported.
I wonder if there is an overall "thing" with the trackpad.
I've had an ongoing issue with my M2 Mini kernel panicking and restarting while in sleep (I get the error message when I come back to the Mac). One of the things I have on in sleep is a Magic Trackpad. After 2 weeks of dealing with Apple tech support and their insisting I unplug everything to test one by one for days at a time, they acknowledged it's a bug in software. The senior advisor was super vague when I asked what the actual bug was. I was told they hope to have it fixed next update, but no promises.
I use the Mighty Mouse. I have always found a track pad unreliable on my Mac Studio. I do use Command Post.
I used to hate editing with the Trackpad but when I enabled Tap to Click and Three-Finger Drag it changed my life. I never get a sore hand after long editing sessions anymore.
But it looks like the issue is related to a few settings on in Settings with the newer trackpads - Final Cut Pro freaks out when they're enabled. I'm going to keep my Mighty Mouse nearby until we get a fix for this. Thanks for watching and commenting!
there is also an issue with the audio, we used to move by 1 frame by keyboard arrows to sync audio, and if we move by 1 frame we hear the frame audio, now you can't hear it and I don't know when will they fix it.

@@matthewTobrien Thanks, I always have "tap to click" off anyway - personal preference, probably because I'm old, and prefer a mouse. Likewise, I always turn "natural scroll" off too, because being a Mac user for over 30yrs, that just does my head in 😆
Cool, Thanks, I do not use a Track pad on my M2 Studio Max, actually could never see myself using a track pad...Lol Tried my Wacom pen a couple of times but I am a Mickey Mouse kind of guy. But I also never try any first versions of any app for the same reason.. Like to wait until at least 10.8.2 or so
I have a Mac Studio Ultra M1 running FCP 10.8, an Apple Magic mouse, an Apple trackpad, and a Logitech Bluetooth mouse on macOS Sonoma 14.5. All THREE work just fine updating text in a text box in a project.
Note, too, that I keep an old USB-A corded mouse for the same reasons you do! :0)

I don't have a track pad etc. but fcp freezes sections of video (solid background) when applying outtro cross dissolve transition
Thank you for doing this! Really do love your channel! And sorry for trolling all the time about captions lol but I truly believe the developers of final cut couldn’t give less of a damn about us users. The main confirmation for this is, if you ever try to do a post about auto captions on Apple, it gets deleted within 10 minutes, no matter how many times you try to post it.
That's such an odd thing for them to automatically delete... I don't see why they'd do something like that. But, per usual, a lot of mystery surrounding One Infinite Loop.

In my opinion, it's more Apple's fault, than FCP team's fault. I doubt that Apple gave permission to the FCP team to create an audio transcription inside FCP knowing that it's coming to the main operative system. It would have been redundant.
Odd. I just tried it with my Trackpad, but I've got the original Apple Wireless Keyboard & Trackpad (the ones that use AAA batteries) and I have no bugs, no hang-up not problem with the latest FCP (running on an M3 Max).
Yup, the original Magic Trackpad doesn't cause the bug - just the newer ones.
its not only the trackpad, I use a mouse and its still glitching.
all of my motionvfx plugins have been affected.
ive been having to click back on to the effect every time I want to make an adjustment to it.

Yes, let's hope so!
It also goes weird if you try and transform the image, as in like drag it large with the little sides handles, you get a random circle and the image doesn't change, you have to click randomly anywhere and then the image will change but you can't actually adjust it anymore really irritating especially if you're trying to change the size of footage from like film size to vertical to make a short. This is on a silicon Mac, M1, I've also got an intel will try that later.
Yup! I mentioned that in my previous video about the bug. I posted a pinned comment with an update with more details on what specifically with the Trackpad is causing the issue.
Unfortunately it seems we’ll have to wait for a software update to solve it although changing some settings with your Trackpad can help.

I do not have any issues like you guys are having at all, and i'm on a macbook pro m1 max, using external displays and the newest trackpad, nothing wrong with my final cut pro, i am glad but i wonder why some people have them

I have not seen this on my M3 Max with either Sonoma or the 2nd beta of Sequoia. I use a trackpad and magic mouse. No issues.

Tested on MacBook with internal trackpad - no problem at all. Looks like it's problem with external trackpad only. Also will be nice to test with bluetooth mouse, but I don't have any.

Turn off the "Force Click and haptic feedback" in the Trackpad System Settings can solve the issues.
My main issues are that "add freeze frame" still doesn't work correctly and at Apple they still don't know that Mongolian is a real language. I asked several times to add it to the language list in the captions but even in 2024 (!) it is still not added. This new version of FCP looks more like a beta version.
Yep it’s freezing just happened to me on my M1 2020 just now
Idk if it’s the new update but when I try to export it just sits idle with no progress at all I’ve tried everything and nothing will work

Hi Matthew, thanks for your channel! I am using a Mac Studio M1 Ultimate, OS 14.5 and MX Mouse and MX KBD. I just connected my Apple Trackpad (older version that uses 2x AA batteries. FCP 10.8 is working with NO ISSUES. Keep up your good work! :)
Thanks for confirming! Seems like those older Magic Trackpads don't have the same gesture options as the newer ones and maybe that's why they're safe to use.
What if using the trackpad wired with lightning cable? Probably the wireless issue?
Good thinking. Already tried that. Makes no difference unfortunately. Doesn't seem to be bluetooth related but rather an issue with how the Viewer in FCP "reads" tap to click and dragging.
My initial thoughts about this weird whatever we’re calling it (‘bug’ seems too generous) were:
1) I’m still on Intel, so maybe it’s that.
2) The footage was coming from an external drive, so maybe it’s that.
To find out this has something to do with Bluetooth (probably)? Totally baffling.
I think the Final Cut on the Mac development team is down to two guys in a basement somewhere.
I have Trackpad and IMac M1, FC 10.8, but I don't have this issue; I also use plugging text. I tried all the titles, but no issue with me.
Did you try to use proxy-only editing?

Try plugging the Magix trackpad into the USB port (charging the trackpad)
THat may work.... I don't have time at work to see if I have the issue or if plugging in the trackpad to the computer will work.

And it still freezes even if the Magic Trackpad is plugged in...
@@matthewTobrien Then there is an issue with the trackpad and the commands that it sends to the computer and interpreted by Final Cut Pro.
the plug in test was a 2 fold test.
1 - takes bluetooth out of the equation
2 - verifies that the magic trackpad has basically the same communication as the trackpad on a MacBook Air or Pro.
I am not saying there is a hardware issue with the trackpad. I am saying that there is a suspect command either being sent from the trackpad, or Final Cut Pro has an issue interpreting a command from the trackpad.
Either way, the result is the same. People are severely hampered by this bug and it may drive some people over to Davinci Resolve.
Good Luck and hopefully you have an insider that may be able to take the information gathered here that may point them to a section of code where this is happening and they can do a software fix (update) that will resolve this issue.

Are you using Better Touch Tool? Have you isolated the possibility BTT could be attributing to the issue?

@@matthewTobrien Good work. Best thing is to always first isolate potential hardware issues/incompatibilities by taking away everything possible (in this case the trackpad).

I have two issues: 1) PSD Files Not Working Properly: Sometimes, when I export a video, it results in a corrupted video.
2) "Missing File" Error: Although the location of the source files hasn’t changed, I keep getting a "Missing File" error and everything turns red!
I cant get music to export . So my Audio music track is not going to File
As if now, July 3rd, 2024, Apple FCPX hasn't released any official update acknowledging on these glitches for the 10.8 version on any of their websites or social medial platforms. Let me know in the comment section if anyone get any news.
I am a bit annoyed, I see that Apple has removed the option to burn DVD and BluRay from Final Cut.
I Dont do that a lot, but sometimes its nice.
They partnered with Roxio to offer a steep discount on Roxio's software to ease the blow. If you have an older Mac you can alway keep an older version of FCP installed there so you can use that feature.
But is it Bluetooth or just the trackpad? I have the Bluetooth Magic Mouse so will that be an issue?
I think it's something to do with how the Viewer window "sees" some of the gestures it's getting from the newer Trackpads. Doesn't seem to be bluetooth related.

I use a Magic Mouse so I’m thinking I may be ok? Haven’t updated yet.
So far using a mouse is reliable although there are a few other minor bugs being reported. This one is fairly major since it’s affecting so many who are using trackpads.

It works with a Magic mouse. So it seems related to the trackpad.
Definitely the trackpad. Dragging works fine with my Mx Master 3, whereas FCP was freezing when I try the same thing on my Macbook's trackpad.

I have German Language Bug, that is my command set in FCP is in German, this goes away if I use an external keyboard, that is not a solution as I am concerned...It works yes, but it is not a fix

I would be surprised if that was the only peripheral that caused it.
This is why they need public betas like davinci.

Thanks for the report Matthew! I have to say, underwhelming updates for FCP is one thing but lately Apple keeps breaking stuff with every update in FCP. It used to be one of the most stable apps ever and now I keep discovering bugs all the time. Especially when editing and handling audio.
I do hope FCP11 will be the one…
