It feels like 80% of new books are cheesy romance novels. Some aren’t really distinguishable. It’s sad because I grew up reading and love novels. Thanks to the changing trends I turned to classics, history and more „mature“ books aimed at older readers. Fortunately here in Germany there is a quite active literature culture completely independent from the trends.
For sure! It's hard to find more different types of books as they usually aren't spotlighted. So there's more work on our end to research and find them.
This is what turned me off of writing for money. You basically no matter how you get published are depending on marketing yourself and if you don’t Go Viral, you can forget it. Which means that you can’t keep a day job and break even on the costs of writing and editing and so on. You have to take a second job marketing yourself and your books on top of writing every day and writing 2000 words at that. It’s no longer art, it’s a small business, and I tell people that all the time - don’t bother writing a book unless you’re ready and willing to work 70 hours a week on being successful and being a celebrity pushing social media, don’t start. It’s not a hobby, it a business, and you better be able to do it yourself or you’ll go broke trying.
Interesting take. Authors can't just rely on publishers to market their book. Its not enough just to get in bookstores anymore. I've seen heaps of more self-publishing happening because people can just market themselves. The landscape has changed for sure. Running a business is hard, and it's not for everyone.
@@BookClubbers traditional publishing will do *some* marketing. But not very much, and they very much expect that you will be doing marketing yourself.

Similarly, books these days have a Queer quota they need to meet too. Especially in fantasy books. And while I, a Queer person, appreciate the representation... I would like books that have QUALITY over criteria. Straight fiction that has a proper storyline, is better than woman x woman with just smut. Money comes from quality. Not quantity. The industry needs to learn that.
No finally writers get easy marketing and actually sales for their books. Unlike actual shit you don't need. Don't hate. Creatives already have it hard as is. Be happy for someone else for once. 😅
There’s no hate at all? it’s a really nuanced topic. You’re right in that BookTok provides much-needed marketing opportunities, which is a positive. I’ve read heaps of booktok books myself! But dismissing the complexities of the issue, such as the risk of all books starting to feel the same and the marginalisation of diverse books getting published. The ultimate goal is to find a balance where both trend-following and non-trend-following creatives can thrive 🙌 ☺️
Good writers can't get their books sold at all anymore because all people care about is spice level and whether it aligns with certain tropes that booktok wants to recycle over and over again. How on earth is this helping authors, except the few sellouts who just want to get rich off of the trend?
