Richard Humphreys was my 5th gt grandfather, and all the Humphreys boys were sent to boxing at 11, right down to my Dad in Lambeth

one of the key advantages of this kind of side on stance is how small it makes the target area. On the other hand, when you are using this kind of side on stance, it can take quite a long time for the rear hand (or foot) to get into the action, despite how much power they might have.

It is interesting how Humphrey's fighting stance utilizes a fist to guard the solar plexus. Always something to learn from your videos, thank you!

I also read that Humphrey left England and started some boxing schools in Ireland.

Another great video. I'm always interested in the stance discussions and I am especially glad that you took the time to talk about how it was described and how it was depicted because I'm always curious about how accurate/realistic (choose your own word) the pictures were.
My question is why did a guard that lasted for an exceptionally long time (from Humphrey's through Wells roughly) fall out of favor? Bigger gloves? Different tactics? Different scoring? Different cultural influences?
    Cheers!

I used to do super bastardized American Tae Kwon Do and that is very nearly the exact fighting stance that was taught because you have a very fast jab and a monster of a cross (if you do it right, anyways.)

Thanks again, good sir! Really interesting to see these home-grown variations. Combine both those fighter's stances, and that is what we have in the Shaolin-Do Kung Fu style. Generally, weight 70/30 on front leg like Mendoza, but body angles as Humphreys, with the arms held as Humphrey's but with rear hand out a bit closer to lead elbow, guarding solar plexus and lower gates. Punching with lead is generally straight out with hand remaining palm-up and hitting with first two knuckles, although vertical fist is used as well. You can see it in the first minute of my old MA vid for my kiddo's here: ruclips.net/video/Jl8afrw2vJk/видео.html Don't laugh :D

Can you deceiver their fighting stances? I cannot and i was a bareknuckle pro for over 10 years. This is just a game. You cannot know what you are talking about. Show me your right and show me the elbow and the hip. If you can show, you know what you are talking about. If not, you have no clue.

HOW CAN WE BE SURE THAT THOSE PICTURES ARE ACCURATE??? THERE IS SUCH A THING AS, LET´S CALL IT, " FREEDOM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION"....THE ARTIST MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE UP HIS WORK BY IMPLEMENTING SUBTLE DIFFERENCES IN HIS DEPICTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, SO THAT NO STALENESS IN HIS ART IS APPARENT ( THEREFORE THE DIFFERENT STANCE FROM ONE BOXER TO THE NEXT)...THE ONLY THING THAT COULD PROOF, THAT ANY OF THESE DRAWINGS/ PAINTINGS ARE CORRECT, WOULD BE, IF MORE THAN ONE ARTISTS WOULD SHOW THEIR SUBJECT THE SAME(!) WAY AS OTHERS DID!...HOWEVER, ONCE CERTAIN ATTRIBUTES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED, EVEN DIFFERENT PAINTERS MIGHT AGREE ON A CERTAIN STYLE...FOR INSTANCE, SUPERMAN HAS BEEN DRAWN BY MANY DIFFERENT ARTIST, THEY ALWAYS DEPICT HIM IN BLUE WITH A RED CAPE..( WITH VERY FEW EXCEPTION!!!)....I AM NOT CLAIMING, THAT IS FACT IN THE CASE OF HISTORICAL SPORTS DEPICTIONS, BUT MAYBE WE SHOULD CONSIDER THAT....?!!

The pictures are a means to illustrate what we are told from numerous written sources. When the descriptions match the images then we can assume they are accurate. And they do.
      Also what's with the shouting?
