Mark's right, a great film - Highlights = Taron Egerton's and Jamie Bell's acting: Elton composing "Your Song": The performance of Crocodile Rock at The Troubadour.
So worth the watch, Taron is incredible, the music is amazing - reminded me how much I love Elton’s music, but they altered it at points for the film which worked so well, downloaded the album straight away.
@@freshedmupdatesedm5852 linda blair at her prime was very convincing as a possessed girl, unfortunately she didnt really get past her performance in Exorcist As for why he said it, its actually high praise, since Exorcist is his favorite movie.
I knew Mr John had serious problems grappling with his sexuality and fame and various substances etc but was not aware these were minor compared to the issues with his folks. Though the film dealt with this very well. The fantasy sequences were really well done, and the impersonation was top notch.
I can not wait to see this film, I loved Sunshine on Leith, Dexter Fletcher is a genius - he's come a long way from Press Gang, although I loved that too!!
SO happy he loved it. I've seen it twice. I really hope BoRhap doesn't steal it's thunder and prevent it from getting the success (and awards) it deserves.
This film should not work. It’s basically R rated Mamma Mia but serious crossed with a little Billy Elliot and a big dose of addiction drama. Yet it’s the most purely enjoyable thing I’ve seen at the cinema this year (despite the alcohol and cocaine. The acting is fantastic, the serious stuff is treated with respect and the musical sequences have terrific energy without having the forced bombast of The Greatest Showmen and it’s ilk (although I can see the outright fantasy sequence alienating some people.) I loved it.
I've only just caught up with this. Watched it last night. Glad I waited, because after the disappointment of Bohemian Rhapsody, which bar the central performance and soundtrack was such a deeply ordinary-to-below-average film, I did not want to believe another of Mark's hyperbolic reviews about a British musical film. Completely delighted. This time you were, right, Doctor K.
I am the same age as Mark, and have been an Elton fan since 1973...have been so worried that this film would be yet another music biOPic disappointment. So glad I can buy tix for me and my daughter and enjoy it to bits. (Fave EJ album: Tumbleweed Connection)
I saw it last night. I was very impressed. It’s largely a film about mental health and it manages to do this in quite a profound way. Beautifully surreal in just the right way. I can see this film dividing people though. I think you have to be able to ‘read’ the film in the right way to enjoy it. It’s more a journey of feeling and thought rather than a traditional linear cinematic narrative. If you’re looking for a straight forward biopic, you may be disappointed (and slightly confused).
Hourray, Elton deserves an excellent film- standing ovation at Cannes and fine reviews. Oh and yes, Captain Fantastic is a fantastic album, my own favourite too, pipping Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Tumbleweed Connection.
So it's good then?? 😂😂 I've never heard Mark besotted with a movie like this. I've seen him be positive but this was giddy excitement. It must be a truly great movie.
You (and everyone) should check out Mark's reviews of Mamma Mia & Mamma Mia 2. They are one a whole other level still. But it is always great to see & hear really love a film. And he was not wrong, Rocketman is wonderful. I was a little angry it just stopped, I wasn't close to done with this film.
I liked Bohemian Rapsody and Rocketman for different reasons which is sooooo cool as they had the same director but not the same (new and fresh) anglessss. They are both brillants. Both actors performances are stunning. They did so much to stick to their respective characters. Classics for me :))
Bryan Singer directed Bohemian Rhapsody. Dexter Fletcher was the producer. ETA: wasn’t aware Fletcher actually took over directing as well partway through production but was credited solely for producing until i relistened to Kermode’s Bohemian Rhapsody review.
I didn’t know much about Elton John or his catalogue beyond the top radio-played hits going in, and i loved this movie. I was hoping for fun musical numbers which i definitely got, but i was not expecting the depth of emotion. I cried at the end. Excellent acting from Taron & others...i need to watch it again!
Feel the same. Loved everything about this film. Saw it last week and want to watch it again. It really spoke to me and the soundtrack was the icing on the cake- I’ve been listening to Elton all my life and will be forever.
Mark was fairly breathless here! This movie just jumped to a "must see" on my list now. Love Elton, but I've always been skeptical of musicals. Will definitely see though!
Taron for an Oscar?! As good of an actor as Rami Malek and also sings the songs himself. Two things count against him....people will compare it with Bohemian Rhapsody and the fact that an actor in a music biopic won best actor last year.
This is the most glowing review Mark has ever given to any movie ever! He has never had that show of love from the first second. I wasn't gonna see rocket man before this. I will now
It was a excellent film taron Egerton played a decent Elton however about an hour in I started to wonder what Jamie bell could of done with the role and maybe better
Everything Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't, i.e., honest. Mercury's story was ruined by Brian May and Roger Taylor soft-soaping the reality. Anyway, THIS is how to make a biopic. BRILLIANT!
Does anyone like to think to think the entire elevator pitch for this movie was 'Let just stick Taran Egerton in glasses!' - ? Does anyone else worry that this could be a whole new British film category for the next two decades? 🤔
I have only heard the hits of Elton John. Never been a fan, only casually listened to his songs when they came up on the radio. Should I go and see the movie, or is it only for the EJ fans?
Get to know the great hidden treasures of Elton. Some hits are superb but some others are among his more mediocre songs. The film had a standing ovation at Cannes, has had positive reviews, including from non-EJ fans
I'm Luton town fan was not going to see this, due Elton John being a fan of Watford. However, since Mark enjoyed it. I'm going with an open mind to see it.
Considering the amount of dangerous drugs he had coursing through his system that baseball was probably floating past him at 3-4 miles an hour, the size of a pumpkin!
I didn’t love it, I don’t think they married the musical sequences with the dramatic biopic well at all. The musical sequences themselves were superb but I didn’t feel during the film and by God Bryce Dallas Howard was just awful. Egerton and the musical sequences were by far the best thing the film had to offer
I'll be honest, I hated it. It's marketed as a biopic similar to bohemian rhapsody but it's just so far from it. It was 40 minuets of story and 90 minuets of musical accompanied by Elton Johns greatest hits.
It isn't marketed as an out and out biopic.....all the actors maintained in interviews it's a loose fantasy based around his life. Very different to Bohemian Rhapsody.
I just saw Rocketman. As a super fan of Elton John I have to admit I am a bit disappointed. I give the film a 7.5 to 8 on a scale of 10. THE MUSIC is the problem. Elton John has a HUGE catalog of songs and the one they use for his Trubador performance is Crocodile Rock? HUH? Wasn't Elton John getting married when he wrote I'm Still standing? The song came before he hit rock bottom. Elton John singing his own songs and songs used in the time frame they were actually written would have made this movie a runaway success.
Its been a while since ive seen Mark so animated, I guess i know which film im going to see next :)
On the massive flappy hands scale this movie is clearly a 10.
Brilliant film, and the "Saturday night" transition scene is breathtaking!
I'm not used to a Briton being so positive about another Briton
haha good point!
