I realised today watching this video that these representative offices for UK territories make a tonne of sense. None of these places actually elect members of (UK) parliament and therefore their relationship with Britain has to be government to government. I also did a quick google just now and found Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have similar offices in London! From what I can tell from my very casual wikipedia reading over the years they seem to be like what Hong Kong used to be to China: Independent in all but name but closely aligned with the parent country for economic, political and historic reasons. Random side note as well, Taiwan has an embassy in Somaliland according to Wikipedia (crossover episode?). Overall this is a super interesting topic, can't wait for more Somaliland content and more Somalilander commenters!
Yes, I had the same realization that there were all these dependency offices and at one point most of them were on my list. But to keep it brief I decided to pair it back to just two. I actually got the idea for this video when I accidentally stumbled upon the Falkland Islands office a few weeks ago. It's just around the corner from parliament, and it was so unexpected! Glad you liked the video - thank you for watching!
Thank you Fredo. Somaliland's office was first opened in 1982 as a liaison's office for the Somaliland National Movement (A freedom fighting organisation). And in 1991, when Somaliland was declared independent again, it was converted to the status that it is today as an office that represents Somaliland to the UK and Commonwealth of Countries.

The CAQ don’t not support independence while also not not supporting remaining attached to Canada. Which in practice means they do a lot of odd things, like maintaining independent “embassies” abroad (as opposed to other provinces, many of which send representatives abroad but have them based in and accredited to the local Canadian embassy).
I take your point on the CAQ - they want their cake and to eat it too, don't they? You can't blame them for the Quebec offices around the world, though. I'm pretty sure they've been around for decades - long before the CAQ rose to power. I'm not even sure the PQ deserves the credit...
Can't disagree. It's crazy that the Canadian federal government allows this, but they allow Quebec to do a lot of things because it's hard to win a federal election without a lot of Quebecois votes!
@@FredoRockwell as a non french speaking resident of Canada, I find it a bit strange but I get why they exist. However most Quebecers are not as enthusiastic about independence these days. My grandma was from Quebec

I thought that Northern Turkish Cypriots is only maintaining diplomatic relations with Turkey. So, I realised the UK government's diplomatic reach is extensive and broad.
As far as I understand things, you are correct - Northern Cyprus only has formal diplomatic relations with Turkey. But there are lots of reasons for maintaining a diplomatic mission in the UK. I believe there are quite a few UK citizens who have retired to Northern Cyprus, and the mission can issue visas and help with legal documents. Also, it helps Northern Cyprus appear more like a recognized country, which I think is important to them. But I was surprised to see they maintain such an expensive location!
@@FredoRockwell could you please assess the East London representative office, Somaliland, area in terms of costs and location? I would love to hear from you
That's really beyond my area of expertise, but in general terms the Somaliland mission is central without being grandiose. The office space is simple, and although all property in London can seem pricey, it appears to be a very responsible location.
About the "Quebec ambassy", it is in reality a permanent delegation which job is to strenghten cultural and economic cooperation between the two entity. Other provinces may have one in othet city or country
You're not wrong about the Quebec office in London, however.... Strengthening cultural and economic ties are essential parts of the work of embassies as well. This focus doesn't differentiate the Quebec "embassies" in any way. Also, yes, other Canadian provinces have similar offices in different international capitals, but these are normally hosted inside the Canadian embassy. Quebec has its own buildings in prominent locations with flags flying outside. These are clearly intended to be seen and to look like an embassy. 🙂
Ah! That gets a bit complicated. When people say "City of London" they mean the ancient, very small, originally-walled city. It's now London's financial district, and is also known as "the square mile" (that's how big it is). Greater London is about a hundred times bigger, or more, I'm not sure
On the one hand, I understand that an embassy is partially a projection of a nations power and prestige, so I would understand if say, Palestine was ever recognized the would want to move there embassy into a more impressive building closer to the center of power. On the other hand, I do think its kind of neat to have an official embassy (or diplomatic mission in this case) in an unexpected place like Hammersmith. In contrast, the Palestinian mission in Dublin is in a fairly central part of Dublin, is near quite a lot of other embassies, and is only 20 minutes walk from the embassy of the USA! (And even closer to the embassy of Israel) I wonder if this is due to the higher support that Palestine receives from the Irish public (and to a lesser extent, the Irish government) then in the UK? Regardless, its interesting.
That's interesting to hear about Dublin. The Palestinian embassy in London is in a really obscure place. Yes, it's in Hammersmith, but down a pretty empty alleyway in Hammersmith. It's so remote and gets so little traffic that when I got there that morning there was a fitness class going on on the road outside the embassy. People were running up and down the alley casting each other on the backs in a relay. It was a very odd moment. I decided to edit that out as I thought it would be so weird viewers would get totally confused about what was going on (I know I was). So anyway, certainly an unusual location!

Gibraltar is fully self governing. The only reason they can't be an independent European mini state like Monaco, Andorra or Malta is that over 300 years ago Spain and Britain signed a treaty saying if Britain gave up sovereignty, then Gibraltar would go to Spain. But the way things are with Gibraltar being *effectively* independent, with the UK having no power over it, works well anyway.
It's not uncommon for British Colonies to have a diplomatic legation in London. Pretty much throughout the history of the British Empire, any colony that was given self-rule at home was given a diplomatic legation to the British Government in London.
Somaliland has come this far without any backing from the International community, whereas failed, terrorist rotten country of Somalia drained the resources and the efforts of the International Community in the hopes that they might succeed in building thrust worthy Govt for their people. For the past 30 yrs, the International community had rewarded the corruption and the bad behaviour of Somalia, but Somaliland has earned the respect of the World through its transparency of the ruling of law and its democratic system. The world is coming into its senses now and it's realising its mistake of ignoring Somaliland all these years. Somaliland is a very important nation both strategically and economically and a very reliable ally and friend, but if the Western countries continue their usual silent mode, Someone else either china or Russia might seize the opportunity. Somaliland deserves more than diplomatic offices in a foreign country, we want what's ours, full recognition. Freedo thank you, you have friends and a second home here in Somaliland!
I had always thought the Republic of Texas was a sort of transition thing, like in California, but if they went to the trouble of having an embassy in London they were more serious than I realized!
I understand video it was great' But we are one Ethnic group Somalia. International community has refused to recognize Somaliland as independent country because the British Empire granted independence for Somaliland in 1960 and told them your completely free society and free country. Somaliland delegates Including Mohamed H I Egal choose to join with Southern Somalis who were receiving independence from Italy in 1960. In July 1 1960 they Both form The Somali Republic in Mogadishu Somalia and Security Council granted the deal!!!
Thanks for watching! Whether or not the Somali people are one ethnic group or a hundred, I don't think that should be the basis for statehood. I don't support ethno-states personally.

Texas Republic surprise me
It's a history that the people of Texas are very proud of (even though independence isn't a serious issue today).
I wonder about Gibraltar embassy
What do you wonder?

#Somaliland_is_not_Somalia
Shalom
Somaliland is free and peaceful.
Yes it is! I hope you'll enjoy my video about visiting the Somaliland embassy. It will be out soon I hope!

Texas is news to me😂
I had always thought the Republic of Texas was a sort of transition thing, like in California, but if they went to the trouble of having an embassy in London they were more serious than I realized!

You left some Embassies out like Embassy of the United Federation of planets Allied States of America Confederate States of America California Republic there's this man in Nevada he started his own country he's an Emperor of the Nevada Empire California Republic has an embassy in Moscow Russia Germany France Australia and they just opened an embassy up at the Vatican for California Republic and the Confederate States of America And the Arizona Empire
