I fell back into shopping in response to work and home stress. My anxiety has gone through the roof, the fomo hits nearly daily, and I realized that my money has been going to things that I order (primarily online) and when they arrive I'm not even close to the same excitement level I had when I purchased it. While I can "afford" the items I've bought, it's at the the sacrifice of other goals, travel, and investment. Shopping is not therapy and can be abused so easily. I needed this. 😓
Curating my social media consumption is so key to a low buy lifestyle. I wasn’t succeeding at all before I did that. It is too tempting to shop if one watches a lot of unboxings. I realize we are what we watch. I have learned so much on this journey.
I agree. I noticed for myself that most of my big designer purchases were made after I watched a lot of unboxings here on RUclips. I don’t watch them anymore!
Oh and yes! I have walked away from online shopping sessions so so so many times. Usually I am feeling bored or frustrated about something, go on social media, see something I like, wind up on that company's website, maybe add things to my cart, but lately I have found the ability to take a deep breath, pause, and just close the browser and literally walk out of the room. Awareness and mindfulness are very real! And I can't stand how these brands have figured out how to send an email as soon as you walk away, telling me I "forgot" to check out. No, I chose not to check out thank you very much.
Social Media encourages spending in the luxury community for sure. I'm a weirdo and try very hard not to be controlled by Fashion Houses or Social Media. I'm so happy I am able to watch others' enjoyment without feeling I want to make the purchases for myself. Thanks Eileen! 💛
Wonderful as always! I use quite a few of these practices. I had not considered using a wishlist in the way you describe, I like the idea and will give it a try.
Unsubscribing from store emails makes a huge difference! Also unfollowing brands on social media. I have done both, as well as cut the amount of unboxings I watch by about 90%. I am saving for a "dream bag" and distraction shopping will not help me reach my goal.
Dear Eileen, Wonderful ideas! I loved the wish list one. So I immediately wrote one down. I asked myself: why do I want those things? If the answer is: because it feels in harmony with myself, it expresses myself and it serves my actual (not fantasy…) life, the item stays on my wish list. If not, they are let go. It took me many years to understand and accept my personal colors, forms, prints and so on. Doing a professional color and style analysis is essential if you want to know what best suits you. So now I buy only those items tho are in my best colors and shapes. Saves A LOT of money. By the way, I started to change my home too. 😊It feels so much more harmonious , organized, clean and time-saving… one of the best style analysis I have done is by Ladybird, found here on RUclips. She analyses things based on your inner movement or energy patterns. It was a revelation!! 💃
I loved this video a lot, Eileen! I’ve found that it has been quite useful for me to have a separate email for receipts and such. And proud to say I’m only subscribed to one brand’s newsletters, haha! But more because that brand’s newsletters seem more like an art gallery than a shopping catalogue. I think it’s really important to be curating our social media! For some reason, the number of luxury haul-type videos have been increasing on this platform? At least in my experience. I think I’ve gotten really saturated with overconsumption content. But it can’t be helped as it’s a hit with the general population.
Thanks for the great tips, Eileen! Started to put them into practice already. I love your videos and sometimes before I buy something, I come to your channel to watch your videos first for a reality check! Separately, I was wondering if you had any insights/thoughts on this - I would like to get a Kelly 25 and I have some purchase history with Hermes and am cautious about getting the bag from secondhand sources due to my concerns about authenticity. This invariably means I may have to spend out of my immediate wishlist to get a fuller purchase history. Would you recommend not to go for the bag even if I can afford it and the analogous purchases that I would have to make to be offered the bag? The tension between working towards my wishlist, and spending beyond that is bugging me. Appreciate any insights you may have. Thank you!
It’s a tricky one isn’t it 🙈 I might not have said this a few years back but I’m now at the stage of my life where I’m not that interested in building a purchase history so my opinion might be biased xx
