You should use gravity and the other tools more. Maybe fusion of different heavier elements may work, as pressure alone evidently isn't enough for some reactions.
As for why wood combusted rather than turning to coal, you were burning it, not heating it. It can survive at a higher temperature so long as there is nothing to actually ignite it, sort of like a dry heat, I think. Something like that. Basically, the burning is self sustaining, but cannot start on its own.
I will try to use gravity more, sometimes I just forget - and nice synopsis on the coal!

It's a mod. You down load it off the internet. It's free like the game is. On pc and android. But only can use mods on pc.

I mean, burning wood in the presence of oxygen results in it turning to ash and smoke..
When i make charcoal, i heat wood in a "mostly" sealed container, to allow gases to escape and not have it explode. >.>;
