You skipped the part where he (Ray) promised them royalties on a handshake deal and never followed through and he didn't let them keep managing their own joint and forced them to change their name and go out of business essentially.
@@completelywitless9593 That's right, no can because it never happened. The brothers and their heirs never made this claim and the brothers famously wanted everything in writing. They would have never dropped their guard for the most important transaction in their lives. The ones who violated a handshake deal were the brothers. They agreed that the original San Bernardino store was part of the $2.7 million sale price and then went back on that.

It wasn't Ray Kroc's idea to buy the land and lease it to the franchisees - it was his partner Harry Sonneborn. He was the person who first said that McDonald's was "a real estate company that just happened to sell hamburgers"
I have heard that Chick-fil-A also buys the land and rents it to the franchise owners. Are there any other franchises that also use the Sonneborn model?
the only reason there are more Subways than any other chain is because they will let ANYONE open one. if you want a McDonald's franchise you need to have a LOT of money and restaurant experience They also won't open McDonald's that will steal an existing business. opening a McDonald's is a great investment
Subways are cheaper to start because aside from warming ovens, Subway doesn't need cooks. All their ingredients are prepacked. Sandwiches are just assembled.
And somehow it is still more expensive, or at least it seems to be. That's why since it arrived in my country 4 years ago and in my town this year I haven't eaten there more than once.

I think it would have been even more interesting if you could have mentioned how it expanded globally. I am a food scientist and have worked for OSI Group, which is a private company in Chicago. Great video but I can't cover up my concern: it seems like you were cutting this video short. E.g. you may hav mentioned, which countries were the first "adopters" of McDonalds (aside of that one picture), or that when did Croc died.
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Ultimately we decided to cut off that part since it was more or less along the lines of "and then they added this product". There's a very narrow balance we must strike between maintaining enough detail and not harming audience retention (the bread and butter of the RUclips algorithm).
To be fair, McDonalds, "the" fast food company, the biggest icon of the industry would have deserved 10+ minutes in length. But then again, that's just my opinion
Randomly spotted James Street in Liverpool as the plot of land at 3:54 and had to comment. This was literally the view I saw every day last year on my way to work. Liver building can also be seen in the background.
Just think of it, although McDonalds was established by some McDonalds brothers around 1950, it was really their order of 8 milk shake machines, that caught the attention of the salesman of those machines, Mr. Croc, and it’s through some kind of a franchise and landlord situation of the ground beneath those restaurants, that changed McDonalds into a worldwide success.
This was a very interesting watch having seen The Founder recently. In the movie he's portrayed as kind of a shady but clever businessman that 'ran of' with the founder's money so to say. This video mentioned several key things thought up by the 'shady businessman' that are what McDonalds is known for today (Ronald McDonald, Happy meal's etc. Good video.
I wouldnt call him shady. He didnt force the brothers to sell their franchise right? Remember that he pays them 4.5 million dollars to acquire McDonalds
Nobody put a gun to their heads and said their signatures or their brains would end up on the sales agreement. Reality is they made what today is worth $20 million for a less than 100 store operation at the time. They did well.
At the time though he thought the price he paid for it was too much. I do think it seems like he did most of the work to allow it to expand as well, but I do think the two founders should have at least gotten a small percentage. The thing is Ray was constantly having to get their approval and wanted to buy them out fast.
By any conventional measure he paid way too much. Several times too much. Ray knew that MCD would soon enter a period of hyper-growth and Turner explained better to pay way too much now than way way, way more just a few years later. Plus he had a limited time contract, the brothers could have just not renewed it. Had they just taken the 1% not the upfront Ray probably would have made the deal based on his later deals.
Watching the movie made me appreciate how the brothers focused on quality. It's as if they mixed In N Out with Chick Filla. Also the same way they were so willing to switch to powdered ice cream, makes me wonder when did they switch to this fake meat they serve.

5:53 The maps says that bolivia and paraguay doesnt have mcdonalds and them say paraguay only have mcdonalds and bolivia has more subway than mcdonald stores.
Because Subway managed to convince the world that their food was healthier than burgers and fries. Fast food is a guilty pleasure, Subway sold itself as fast food without the guilt. Which is fine if you do what Jarred actually did (eat 6-inch veggie subs without cheese or sauce... not fuck children), but a foot-long meatball sub is just as fattening as a Big Mac.
However, a footlong meatball sub is about as satiating as three Big Macs. Much more nutritious as well. Sure it's not health food but you can put a good amount of vegetation in there, you can get the wholemeal bread, it is a much less guilty option than the unapologetically unhealthy burger joints.
Opening a Subway franchise is much, much cheaper than other fast food joints ($200,000-$300,000 as opposed to $1,000,000+ for McDonald's), their food requires less preparation and thus fewer employees, almost no cooking is done in the store, and most of the ingredients (veggies and bread) are quite cheap. Keep in mind most locations doesn't necessarily mean most profitable or most popular.
Yuki De Jesus : I love MICKEY D'S french fries and Wendy's burgers, chicken sandwich etc. I will pick Wendy's any day over McDonald's: except for the fries😄 Something about McDonald's french fries: Extremely Great 💯✊💪😃
Dave's Double kicks the crap out of a Big Mac... and I like a Big Mac!! Spicy Chicken is leaps and bounds better than McChicken or any other chicken sandwich at McDonald's. And how can anyone not take the Frosty over a McDonald's milkshake or sundae? Yup, Wendy's is just better.
B-MakeFashion just like Mike said, the founder is written from a different point of view. I would say, the Mcdonald brothers were unable to see what Ray Kroc can see with the Mcdonald brand. Ray saw a revolutionary way of people eating out that can be replicated easily on a global scale. The McDonald’s, however, were not buying that and got stuck in the old age. So, just like Yahoo and Blockbuster of today, they got left behind in the past.
McDonald is really famous and has a long history. However, I don't really like McDonald's in Korea. The amount of lettuce is very small, and French fries are also very soggy ,so I rarely go. I hope Korea's McDonald's develop more.
I live in canada and there is something called Mcdonalds monopoly but i am not sure if theres a thing like that in the rest of the world also there is the special sauces in the burgers which is only available here🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I knew some of this due to something I read in 5th grade during class. But it did have some stats I didn't know. And honestly would rather work at Subway than McDonald's. Subway at least is a better environment typically.
That explains a lot about Donald Trump and his personality. Of course, his mom is from a Scottish Gaelic speaking island, which is closely related to Irish
the map at 5:44 is wrong there are 8 McDonalds just in Belgrade not to mention all of Serbia, the first one opened in 1988.Also i know there are McDonalds in Hungary too.
The part about the part of the brothers opening 20 stores is incorrect they opened only one and he closed very quickly after opening after no management but the rest is quite correct well done
I havent ever eaten a happy meal i live in a rural area of finland and my parents though badly of mcdonalds+now that i have eaten few bigmacs i find it disgusting. burger king came here under 5 years ago and its soooooooooo much better but the shit thing is that the closest one is 70km from me.

There is a movie about McDonald's: The Founder. I watched it and just as surprised as this video.
The movie " The Founder" tells a different story......
ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ ΛΙΑΡΟΣ The movie the founder is from a different point of view
B-MakeFashion just like Mike said, the founder is written from a different point of view.
I would say, the Mcdonald brothers were unable to see what Ray Kroc can see with the Mcdonald brand. Ray saw a revolutionary way of people eating out that can be replicated easily on a global scale. The McDonald’s, however, were not buying that and got stuck in the old age. So, just like Yahoo and Blockbuster of today, they got left behind in the past.
really enjoyed it, can u guys make one about ford motors?
Great video! Shell would be a great company to do next!
do Lockheed Martin next
McDonald is really famous and has a long history. However, I don't really like McDonald's in Korea. The amount of lettuce is very small, and French fries are also very soggy ,so I rarely go. I hope Korea's McDonald's develop more.
I think the fast food chain with the most drama behind them would probably be Jack in the Box. Do one on them.
merci madame pour cette vidéo
elle est nul
When I hear McDonald's, I don't think if burgers and fries. I think of chicken wings. Because the McDonald's here sells wings.
Do a Cleveland cavaliers story thanks if you notice it
Interesting but rather light examination of McDonald's
I live in canada and there is something called Mcdonalds monopoly but i am not sure if theres a thing like that in the rest of the world also there is the special sauces in the burgers which is only available here🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Zaim Abbas Sheerazi here in the states we have McDonald's monopoly too
I want a Big Mac, fry's and a Coke now.😂
Here after The Founder
who else has to watch this for school?
I knew some of this due to something I read in 5th grade during class. But it did have some stats I didn't know. And honestly would rather work at Subway than McDonald's. Subway at least is a better environment typically.
McDonalds has the best fountain soda on the face of the earth!!!!
I hope you guys do videos on the guitar, surfing, and athletics apparel industry (such as nike, under armour)
I still usually get the McDonald’s Big Mac Meal for ether lunch or dinner sometimes im addition an M&M’s McFlurry
Please make a video about Subway, Largest restaurant chain
and also 7-11
A prime example of a corporate giant that cares nothing for the health of the consumers they serve.
That explains a lot about Donald Trump and his personality. Of course, his mom is from a Scottish Gaelic speaking island, which is closely related to Irish
Donald is a common english name.
McCancerald is my favorite...
the map at 5:44 is wrong there are 8 McDonalds just in Belgrade not to mention all of Serbia, the first one opened in 1988.Also i know there are McDonalds in Hungary too.
The part about the part of the brothers opening 20 stores is incorrect they opened only one and he closed very quickly after opening after no management but the rest is quite correct well done
Some other RUclipsr said that the McDonald's brothers father started it and then they took over
