McDonald's is an American hamburger and fast-food restaurant chain. It was founded in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald, in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, they reorganized their business as a hamburger stand, using production line principles. The first McDonald's franchise using the arches logo opened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1953. Businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent in 1955 and subsequently purchased the chain from the McDonald brothers.
Today, McDonald's is the world's largest restaurant chain, serving approximately 68 million customers daily in 120 countries across approximately 36,900 outlets. McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken products, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, milkshakes, wraps, and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes, the company has expanded its menu to include salads, fish, wraps, smoothies, and fruit. A McDonald's restaurant is operated by either a franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself. The McDonald's Corporation revenues come from the rent, royalties, and fees paid by the franchisees, as well as sales in company-operated restaurants.

You skipped the part where he (Ray) promised them royalties on a handshake deal and never followed through and he didn't let them keep managing their own joint and forced them to change their name and go out of business essentially.
You can't really prove that claim true.
@@completelywitless9593 That's right, no can because it never happened. The brothers and their heirs never made this claim and the brothers famously wanted everything in writing. They would have never dropped their guard for the most important transaction in their lives. The ones who violated a handshake deal were the brothers. They agreed that the original San Bernardino store was part of the $2.7 million sale price and then went back on that.

this is opposed to current restaurants,
thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are more powerful than restaurants,

people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days
menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app
Apologies for the mistake near 0:32. The name McDonald is Scottish, not Irish (although the parents of Richard and Maurice were from Ireland).
It's not ok
Business Casual if subway is bigger than McDonald's then why did McDonald's come to Romania immediately after the fall of communism but it took until 2014 for subway to cone to Romania?
idk but there are literally ten thousand more subways in the world than mcdonald's
Subway is a much younger franchise and was still conquering America at the time.

There is a huge difference in quality between company owned and franchised locations.
Alex Black can you further elaborate please?
Well I think it could be assumed that the company has better oversight over their employees than if the restaurants were owned by franchisees.

It wasn't Ray Kroc's idea to buy the land and lease it to the franchisees - it was his partner Harry Sonneborn.
He was the person who first said that McDonald's was "a real estate company that just happened to sell hamburgers"
I have heard that Chick-fil-A also buys the land and rents it to the franchise owners.
Are there any other franchises that also use the Sonneborn model?
That’s smart & why I’ll never buy my own franchise under that model - I prefer to own, collect the money and let others do the work and pay.
Did you watch The Founder?
LZ I just watched it yesterday. this video pretty much sums it up
It's basically like he watched The Founder and rephrased what he learned along with reading Wikipedia.
Believe it or not, no part of the video is based on the Founder. Instead, I read the sources the movie directors used to make the movie, and that's how I sifted through fact and fiction. But yeah, surprise, surprise, a video and a movie based on the same story are gonna be similar. Go figure.
lol
Can you do one on White Castle? Sure I could just read it, but your accent is so charming I'd rather hear you speak. :-)
I thought there was a fly on my screen
My suggestions for future videos:
IKEA
Unilever
Danone
Corona
Samsung
Carrefour
Royal Dutch Shell

Love IKEA and Samsung
Folgers
IKEA: started by Ingvar Kamprad who was (he died in January this year) by all accounts the living embodiment of Dickens' character Ebenezer Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol". That and ties to Swedish Nazi movements during and after WWII.
Danone is owned by Nestlé so take Nestlé
ok So guys that is the movie The Founder in 7 minutes.
Always dig the content. Thanks for being so committed.
It would be nice to see an exploration of Bacardi Limited.
Good points can be made on the hardships the company faced in it´s formative years, the political economics surrounding a centuries old Cuban company, the process of Rum making itself, and the Spirit industry as a whole today as affected by Bacardi.
Thanks again for your content and furthermore your time.
Congrats, people voted for Bacardi to be our next video (after BIC)! Any other recommendations, Mr. Nostradamus?
Business Casual Is there any successful company from an ex communist country? it would boost moral in ex communist countries to see successful multinational companies from that part of the globe. i know id like to see that.
Damn 30 seconds? Now a days it has went back to 30 minutes
And the ice cream machine is broken.
Love these videos man. Keep it up!
These videos are always fantastic. I really enjoy the objective view you give everything, it makes it feel like a real informative video rather than a political or opinion based one.
I think it'd be interesting to do these videos is two parts. 1st part will be mostly like this one: brief historical overview. Then a part 2: explaining how they make money.
I would have love to see more about the real estate as a business model method that McDonald's operates under.
Excellcent doc on mcd. Thankyou. Loved the movie the founder loosely based on this short doc about mcd history. Thank you very much!!!
4:18 just when you think the backstory to these things cant get any worse, its not even the original owner, the whole thing got stolen from them
Watch the movie "Founder" on Netflix. Great flick that talks all about it
Man, the quality of the mic being used is excellent.
I know, right! It's still the same one I bought way back in the beginning: www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/5879a6ca22e5aa7e/index.html
I am also acknowledging your post on reddit.
Found you on Reddit. Nice videos! Well worth the watch. Very interesting.
the only reason there are more Subways than any other chain is because they will let ANYONE open one. if you want a McDonald's franchise you need to have a LOT of money and restaurant experience
They also won't open McDonald's that will steal an existing business. opening a McDonald's is a great investment
Subways are cheaper to start because aside from warming ovens, Subway doesn't need cooks. All their ingredients are prepacked. Sandwiches are just assembled.
Very true! The fact that military bases own Subways and not one single McDonald's alone should give some indication of the advantage Subway has.
And somehow it is still more expensive, or at least it seems to be. That's why since it arrived in my country 4 years ago and in my town this year I haven't eaten there more than once.
So which is a better investment subway or McDonald's?
NobleRomanOwl 86 which country is that?
I actually love this channel
I really like how you tell the story. The best i’ve heard on Mac
really fine video again, didn´tknow a lot about mcdonalds. interesting story. liked
This was a very interesting watch having seen The Founder recently. In the movie he's portrayed as kind of a shady but clever businessman that 'ran of' with the founder's money so to say. This video mentioned several key things thought up by the 'shady businessman' that are what McDonalds is known for today (Ronald McDonald, Happy meal's etc. Good video.
I wouldnt call him shady. He didnt force the brothers to sell their franchise right? Remember that he pays them 4.5 million dollars to acquire McDonalds
Great recap of the movie ”The Founder"
Do Lockheed Martin!
This must be interesting
found you from a reddit comment. instant sub, great vid.
There may be more Subways, but I've seen/ heard of at least a dozen Subways close down over the years. I've never heard of a McDonald's closing down.

I'd like to point out that in the map, you mentioned some countries that doesn't have McDonald's while in reality they do have it like Morocco for example.
+kchichine hamza yeah the map isn't from 2017, but it was the latest one we could find
I'm from Romania and there is McDonalds in almost every city.
Business Casual i just noticed that in the map.... not from 2017 but the latest we can find? are you kidding me? im romanian and i used to have my birthdays as a young child at mcdonalds! i still ha e vivid memories of happy meals with SPACE JAM TOYS! that was in the 90s! EARLY 90! since i can remember there have been mcdonalds at EVERY STREET CORNER in Romania. That map isnt just old, it must be from 1990 or even earlier!
we had mcdonalds in romania since the early 90's so this map is very wrong
I think it would have been even more interesting if you could have mentioned how it expanded globally. I am a food scientist and have worked for OSI Group, which is a private company in Chicago. OSI grew alongside McDonald’s since they were providing most products as it grew, which is why the McDonald’s HQ is in Chicago.
I just want to address that there is an excellent film about how McDonald's originated called *Founder* which is an excellent film that I recommend watching.
Great video! Shell would be a great company to do next!
Randomly spotted James Street in Liverpool as the plot of land at 3:54 and had to comment. This was literally the view I saw every day last year on my way to work. Liver building can also be seen in the background.
I love it when you try to pronounce San Bernardino!
5:29 made me realize that after the 2000s, I pretty much stopped going to McDonald's altogether,I didn't realize the bag changed
Anyone else watching this while they're hungry?
What software do you use to edit this great vid man?
The most influence hamburger restaurant ever !!!
you make me want to go watch that movie The Founder like right now
This videos are lit dude
I just think that it's sad that the McDonalds of today has pratically nothing to do with the original brothers/family that created it but the name. It makes me feel like never eating there again.
Have you even eat in McD in the 60s? Remember that Mac and Dick's joint was already a fast food restaurant back then
Crybaby.
Rogerio Andrade me also
Rogerio trust me, none of the company inverstors care about that!

I hope you guys do videos on the guitar, surfing, and athletics apparel industry (such as nike, under armour)
really enjoyed it, can u guys make one about ford motors?
Midvalley Megamall, Malaysia at 6:19. But it was renovated a few years ago
Since I know a fair bit about maccy's histoy, I only now realised how much little detail you leave out. But of course, it would take hours to cover everything. Great video nonetheless!
I knew some of this due to something I read in 5th grade during class. But it did have some stats I didn't know. And honestly would rather work at Subway than McDonald's. Subway at least is a better environment typically.
I just noticed that the McDonald's jingle was woven throughout the soundtrack of this video. That's pretty clever.
There is a movie about McDonald's: The Founder. I watched it and just as surprised as this video.
Your English is both great and humorous
thank you
Watching the movie made me appreciate how the brothers focused on quality. It's as if they mixed In N Out with Chick Filla.
Also the same way they were so willing to switch to powdered ice cream, makes me wonder when did they switch to this fake meat they serve.
Why does the background music sound like Fallout 4 theme?
think about it for a bit
+Cohero Ahaha, the intent was to base it off the "I'm lovin it" jingle, but I can see how it sounds similar!
-Matt, the composer
Great video but I can't cover up my concern: it seems like you were cutting this video short. E.g. you may hav mentioned, which countries were the first "adopters" of McDonalds (aside of that one picture), or that when did Croc died.
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Ultimately we decided to cut off that part since it was more or less along the lines of "and then they added this product". There's a very narrow balance we must strike between maintaining enough detail and not harming audience retention (the bread and butter of the RUclips algorithm).
You are doing a good job in my opinion. I can read up raw numbers on wikipedia if I desire.
To be fair, McDonalds, "the" fast food company, the biggest icon of the industry would have deserved 10+ minutes in length.
But then again, that's just my opinion
Disney or a Samsung video would be awesome next. Keep up the great work
Hehe the brudders... seriously though great video man

Walmart would be a better idea.

Ray Kroc stole McDonalds.
Funny. In this case the stealer gave a lot of money to his victims.
for only 2.7 million dollars ray got a multi-billion dollar business, I'd say he stole it from them
Nobody put a gun to their heads and said their signatures or their brains would end up on the sales agreement. Reality is they made what today is worth $20 million for a less than 100 store operation at the time. They did well.
At the time though he thought the price he paid for it was too much.
I do think it seems like he did most of the work to allow it to expand as well, but I do think the two founders should have at least gotten a small percentage. The thing is Ray was constantly having to get their approval and wanted to buy them out fast.
By any conventional measure he paid way too much. Several times too much. Ray knew that MCD would soon enter a period of hyper-growth and Turner explained better to pay way too much now than way way, way more just a few years later. Plus he had a limited time contract, the brothers could have just not renewed it. Had they just taken the 1% not the upfront Ray probably would have made the deal based on his later deals.
5:54 to 6:40, the genius of Ray Kroc.
Subscribed.... more
Just think of it, although McDonalds was established by some McDonalds brothers around 1950, it was really their order of 8 milk shake machines, that caught the attention of the salesman of those machines, Mr. Croc, and it’s through some kind of a franchise and landlord situation of the ground beneath those restaurants, that changed McDonalds into a worldwide success.
Please make a video about Subway, Largest restaurant chain
and also 7-11
i love zis videos
LMAO when they were introducing it to my country my friend's dad turned down a manager position haha
I think subwayd be an interesting one maybe chuck a video their way.
there was a name at the end that was upside down... "Nathan Smith" not sure if that was intentional.
It was, just look up his Twitter and you'll understand why :P
Me and my little ones eat McDonald's every week 🍔🍔🍟🍟 were loving it
companies Id like to hear about: sirius xm radio, cold stone creamery, chuck e cheeses, toys r us
love your videos bc.
Love you too bud!
whats wrong with three main things in n out does that they dont need to expand their menus
I still usually get the McDonald’s Big Mac Meal for ether lunch or dinner sometimes im addition an M&M’s McFlurry
I see what you did there with that Monopoly reference, because sometimes McDonalds comes out with a Monopoly game that they do... :P
McDonald's milkshalke machines?!?!?
Ice cream machine broke though
Fascinating accent!
The part about the part of the brothers opening 20 stores is incorrect they opened only one and he closed very quickly after opening after no management but the rest is quite correct well done
I live in canada and there is something called Mcdonalds monopoly but i am not sure if theres a thing like that in the rest of the world also there is the special sauces in the burgers which is only available here🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

I'm curious about the original location of McDonald's because that only 30 mins away but being born and raised nearby , now at almost 40 years of age ... this is my first time breathing of this.
do Bombardier next!
can someone care enough to explain to me why Ray Croc is able to keep most of the profits if he buys the land and leases back? isnt the sales of burger still going back to the MCD brothers ? Croc is only collecting the rent right?
I think the fast food chain with the most drama behind them would probably be Jack in the Box. Do one on them.
So who’s the number 1 restaurant chain ahead of mcDonalds ?
5:53 I just wanted to point out that the map is either outdated or just wrong because some of those countries do have McDonald's
I havent ever eaten a happy meal i live in a rural area of finland and my parents though badly of mcdonalds+now that i have eaten few bigmacs i find it disgusting. burger king came here under 5 years ago and its soooooooooo much better but the shit thing is that the closest one is 70km from me.
The movie " The Founder" tells a different story......
ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ ΛΙΑΡΟΣ The movie the founder is from a different point of view
B-MakeFashion just like Mike said, the founder is written from a different point of view.
I would say, the Mcdonald brothers were unable to see what Ray Kroc can see with the Mcdonald brand. Ray saw a revolutionary way of people eating out that can be replicated easily on a global scale. The McDonald’s, however, were not buying that and got stuck in the old age. So, just like Yahoo and Blockbuster of today, they got left behind in the past.
Haha, I recognize the store at 6:21
Its in Malaysia
What is the background music? Thanks
