Can I say how much I adore these videos? For years your long-form, freestyle, conversational-type videos have propelled my homeschool and kept me believing in myself. You taught me how to blend and honor the seasons for my 2e learner. Crafting an education for a 2e learner is a constant challenge, but your insight has made it less so. It also gave me the courage to move my kiddo up to his "real" grade level. However, I hesitated because he and LC will be in the same grade. Your looking-back videos have helped me craft my next year! I don't want to go into a school year without them🤣.

Now what did I say about making me cry?! Thank you for sharing your journey with me, I appreciate you and your words so much. And in the end, no decision is permanent, we can always pivot as we see fit for our 2e learners🩵

Thank you so much! I love how thorough this is. Such great info. And I don’t mind your longer videos…now my kitchen is very clean! I’m deeply grateful for all that you do for homeschooling parents.

You have been the highlight of my weekend... because it's taken me three days to complete this video (fellow ADHD'er and distraction extraordinaire here ✨️👋😅). I can not say how much I value hearing/witnessing your detailed accounts on navigating math, namely into the middle school years. I am shaking in my boots. Thank you for your strategical perspective on this. Our eldest is entering sixth grade and we're admittedly a wee bit 'behind' in math (I don't use that word or comparison loosely... we have catching up to do)- I am so hoping to align with a strong program that can bridge us into the pre-algebra world, and I'll be checking out Denison for sure.
May I please ask you: do you have a favorite reference or source that you look to when you are deciding which grade level standards you are prioritizing as a goal in your academic years? I ask you because I see you folks maintain a sweet little 'Waldorf influence' streak in your style, while also setting the bar high for academic growth and exposure. You have a really neat approach. I think we've been coasting on the sweet, gentle approach of Waldorf for borderline too long- I am now proactively trying to make adjustments, fill gaps, and create new goals that still align with my academic values. Do you have a trusted resource for standards that you rely on when deciding your big picture plans for a new year?

Aw, thank you so much! I wholeheartedly understand-I often forget mid-sentence who I’m replying to 😂 Now, for your questions… oof, this is hard to summarize into simple words and recommendations. It’s a combination of things, as I don’t use any one source as “bible,” for lack of a better term. But let me attempt to break it down a bit, and I’ll cover it in my planning videos this summer too.
First, this one scares people: I am not afraid to print my state standards for the grade I’m teaching, and I do so every year. I don’t use it to formulate a plan but to provide me a piece of the puzzle as I develop what aligns with our approach and my knowledge of child development. I also refer to the "What Your Child Needs to Know" book series from Core Knowledge, which ends in grade 6. Again, just a piece of the puzzle. I do not care for some that are a popular recommendations
of similar feel but homeschool specific. I’m sure you probably know which one it is. Not my vibe at all.
But then I step outside the box because maintaining a Waldorf-inspired flair in our approach is important to us. I refer to some of my favorite Waldorf education titles to see what is taught, when, and why, and decide if that’s something I would like to pursue. I have some of my favorites linked in my Amazon store under the Waldorf supplies and homeschool mom favorite reads category. That covers elementary and middle school, some high school in passing.
For high school, I had to step even further outside the box. Some of the guides I look at are shown in my teacher resource binder, and I’ll link that video below. I’ll also be sharing some new book titles in an upcoming PD video that I’m using as part of the mix in these upper grades. I’m oversimplifying everything, but just to give you an idea-it’s a process for us.

@@Arleneandcompany OH 😍 This is just lightyears beyond what I was dreaming or hoping for... ThAnK YoU! I have read and reread, over and over. What a gem studded response. I'm really working on shaping things up over here, which has to start with me... assessing my own grown self over here well ahead of these children, shoot!
Since the start, I too have always kind of handpicked what resonated from the Waldorf grade content- take what works, leave the rest. I have always really liked that it just seemed so much more about 'subject matter' from grade to grade and way less like 'standards'. I'm at a profound crossroads here, though, and I think bending down low to sort these kinds of things out while heading into the middle school era is paramount.... and feeling 'right' for us. I'll just reiterate that you're not only a favorite 'voice' in these spaces because you share so much about navigating the higher grades, but because your style is very unique. I feel blessed to have you as 'an influence' in this adventure and I mean that in the way of inspiration.... not the icky way it's used in the social medias. I want to thank you for your time and energy, Arlene.... I am taking notes 🗒💕

Really appreciate your deep dives. Going to check out the foreign language book to see what languages they have. Eagle of the Ninth is a tough one. My mum loves Rosemary Sutcliff so she had me try to read it in the 1990s and I was not a fan. 😂

Wow! This is sooo helpful! Thank you for generously sharing your insights with us! You gave me some ideas of resources to consider for next year.
I have also been trying to decide on math for my daughter going into 7th grade. She did an old version of OM6 this year and it was fine. But like you said, a more in depth answer guide would be so helpful. I looked at the placement guide for Denison pre-algebra and there were a lot of problems I don’t think she’d know. But maybe they come toward the end.

Definitely wouldn’t jump to pre Algebra if you feel there’s significant gaps. But that been said , a lot of the topics are reviewed that should’ve been covered in previous years before hitting the algebra portions. Thank you so much for watching 🩵

That’s what’s tricky. She did OM K-3, switched to teaching textbooks for 4-5 and back to Om 6. Since our Om 6 is from 2007, I am not sure if she’s on track for pre-algebra or what. I think I’ll email Denison for some help,
