  • Load testing is the only wait to test an AGM or sealed lead acid battery. A cheap load tester will do the trick. Use on any AGM or flooded lead acid battery.

Hi Marion. I've got one of those on my test bench too. I also use those newer devices that test the battery's internal resistance and CCA capacity. I test my batteris once evey 6 or so months. I sure have a lot of batteries, 4 in the boat, 2 in the 3500, 1 in the dump trailer, utility trailer, tractor, RTV, lawn mower, wife's car, lawn vacuum, my 1500, and finally my ham station's power system. I want to do the best I can to avoid one of those "oh no" events, particularlly in the boat. Best to you and your bride.

I've got the same Harbor Freight load tester, only a little newer. Seems to work great.

Marion: just so happens I had to replace my OEM batteries today on my 2017 ram with the 6.7 L -> $500!
Only place in town that had batteries in stock was O’Reilly’s went with their AGM as well. My question is did you ever hook your truck up to a trickle charger when it was not being drove for a few days? I work shift work where I’m off at some .7 days straight And I’ve always used a trickle charger to keep my OEM batteries at least fully charged or close. Do you recommend that with these AGM batteries?
I’ve read where it’s best to do this with this type of battery at least try to keep it fully charged as possible at all times.

@@MarionBlair from what I understand and I’m sure others who have researched this know, today’s newer vehicles, with all the electronics having to be run while the vehicle is operational, the alternator never has enough time to fully charge the batteries back before we shut the vehicle off.
Thus the reason some have invested in a trickle charger to always plug the vehicle in when it’s not gonna be drove for a while to fully charge the batteries.
These AGM batteries seem to benefit from being fully charged every once in a while.
Since these batteries cost almost my left kidney to replace I am going to make sure every time my vehicle sits in the garage for more than two days it will be connected to a trickle charger .

Marion, did your truck throw a P2609 code? It's a intake air heater system performance code. My truck throws the code when the truck is cold. Outside Temps are usually below 30°f. The truck starts sometimes the truck run a little rough. My guess is the 6 year old battery's don't have enough amps to properly run the grid heater. Hope this issue goes away with new battery's.

I've got a 2015 3500 Cummins with the original batteris. I live in Michigan so I see the temperature swings. So far, no issues/codes with the batteries but I am expecting this year may be the year they get replaced.

I bought one of these load testers about a month ago to test out my batteries (both batteries where ruled dead as the truck sits more often than not, luckily they were still under warranty). I find these trucks like/require strong batteries for them to be happy. The slightest hint of a weak battery/s and they start throwing codes.
