Ricky!! I had such an awesome experience last night because of your existence. I was at an underground techno party up here in SF, rocking my midi in/out/thru hat, and the headliner, Spanish techno producer Joton, was wearing a see you later oscillator hat! We pointed at each other's hats, smiled, and gave a thumbs up to one another. Thank you for creating that moment!
That works really well for me for live shows albeit not so good for videos. I'm just starting with videos, might come to the same conclusion on videos as well.
Ever since subscribing to your channel you’ve been motivating me to dig out my old gear and maybe delve into performing live. I’ve only ever made music for myself.
I'm new to modular synths, and all that, but past week or two I've had this philosophy developing to look at a synth / sampler / sequencer / etc. -setup like an acoustic drum kit: - Similar "modular" setup, collection of different parts. - Setting up physically for ergonomic reasons - Skill needed to play it balanced. For electronic musician that might mean adjusting levels and EQ in mixer, and the ability to listen to what you are doing so you don't run in to problems where f.ex. a bass synth is overpowering everything. I could go on an on about the similarities. Electronic musicians are kind of a special type. Our setups can be very unique compared to what someone else has. But that doesn't remove the fact that we can develop a type of virtuosity that allows us to comfortably perform with the modular or non-modular setup. Skill set is just action-wise wildly different from a drummer, or a guitar player. We need to get comfortable at different things. Adjusting mixer, patching modular, handling sequencer(s), live sampling, live loop recording (audio and midi). For a drummer or guitar player, the virtuosity is in the micromotoric control of hands and feet.
Ricky, your videos are always on point! It always seems like you have a full production and camera crew behind your videos. I know it's you, but damn, I'm consistently impressed with the flow and the cut-scenes and just the all around production value. Absolutely love the content and the message. Keep on keep'n on.
I use a Brother PT-H110 handheld printer for all my cables & gear, it’s under $40 and worthwhile. I have a similar amount of gear as you, synths etc running into audio & MIDI patch bays, it’s a nightmare without labels. Black text on white labels are visible on a dark stage and leaves no residue.
This video came at a perfect time for me as I’m currently putting together probably my sixth version of my live set over the last four years. This time around I’m trying my best to keep it as simple as possible with just enough structure to keep me from getting lost yet the freedom for spontaneity and happy accidents to happen. Thanks for the video!
The labeling tip is so key! Label your wires as well as your equipment. It makes setup go faster and when you are packing up if you keep a checklist it will prevent you from losing wires at gigs as well.
Thanks for the pep talk near the end of the video. I have not played a live dance set since 2005 and I have been second guessing myself if I still have it in me to do again. I feel more confident now after watching this clip.
Great stuff Ricky, thanks for sharing your thoughts so honestly and clearly. You make some excellent points. Watching your content over the last year has inspired me to dig the old MPC 1000 out and start working on that set I always knew it was capable of, so thank you!
Really beautiful message and video! A few years ago I had the chance to start over, which without getting too personal has definitely meant getting to become the person I wanted to be both when I was younger and a few years ago. It doesn't have to take something tragic like it was for me, or a new decade, any time is the right time to start down that path. Having trust in yourself is a big part of that. And that is an absolutely beautiful sunset, reminds me of back where I grew up in Long Beach (NY).
thanks for your videos, very encouraging. It was very refreshing to hear you talk about your lack of knowledge on playing the piano and previously only knowing one chord! I know even less and sometimes its intimidating when people seem to know so much about music
I re-added my Behringer D and Keystep on a shelf over my suitcase (Deluge, Mother 32, mixer, Boss DD7 and Eventide H9). Played with it for a couple of hours, amazing, but worried me with so much synth going on. Removed the Boog/Keystep and played and oh wow there's my sound, simpler and more creative as each instrument has space.
I keep coming back to the circuit. One day they’ll release a new version with new synth engines, more samples, and randomization like in the elektron products. It has held up really well these years and only needs a few things for a golden new product.
Another great video Ricky!! I got a play out coming up man, and your advice at the end really helped as I was a little nervous as I havn't played out for a while, but it excited nervous as I know I gonna have great fun and be able to test out some new bits!! Thanks bro!! X
Which is why I have used only a Korg Electribe ESX & EMX for my live setup for over 10 years. They are processed through Reaper DAW which is controlled with the Novation LaunchControlXL. Fits all in one box, easy to transport & set up. I have tried to find a replacement for the Korg but so far nothing comes close. Still waiting...
In a way, a lot of your tips in this video totally relate to one of your recent videos (as of October/November 2021, that is) … well, at least I see and feel the relation. Becoming familiar with a piece of gear or a software is so enabling, in the way that doesn’t get carried away by thinking about what to do. Instead, one can just do it and bringing the idea to life. So for some (like me, I realise), limiting the arsenal of gear and software purposely may help in becoming actually familiar with the tools at hand. For what reason ever, you made me realise this - and now it is up to me to work it out. Literally, Thanks for that, Ricky! Apart from that, you raised the question or something like that about the difference between being/becoming familiar with a piece of gear (or any other tool) and being/becoming comfortable with it. While there sure are some very smart (and official) explanations on that out there, my first thoughts and feelings were: 'familiar like enabling', ‘comfortable like beaten path'. It sure hasn’t be that extreme (or bad), but as always, and that is my idea and experience, too comfortable may lead to denying new ways, sort of - while too familiar, at least when talking about gear, software or tools in general, may not turn out this limiting as far new ideas, concepts and experiments are concerned. Well, at least that is ho I feel about it at the moment. Again: thank you so much, Ricky, for sharing it all!
Getting to know one piece of Gear or a single instrument is not still water, there is always depths to Explore and the more dedicated to a single piece, the more you can get out of it. You are a real inspiration. But please make music for yourself maybe not first but on the same level as your audiencie, amaze and surprise them even if they only wanted to party.
Thanks for the encouragement! I know i can play a show, but just need to piece it together! I hate getting caught up in gear, but I am finding which pieces i'd like to gig with. I definitely need a dedicated synth. That's the main thing i'm struggling to pick right now! I want to play some keys live! Argon8? Korg minilogue? Hydra? Bassstation? Too many good ones out right now!
AND as the suns sets over the sea, all of those seagulls on the beach by the water are saying to each other "I say! Isn't that Ricky Tinez over there?" ...
Not a criticism at all, just a stranger's reminder not to burn yourself out. The reel from the hotel room at NAMM - I've seen that look in the mirror too many times, look after yourself Ricky and take it easy.
Herrera idea if you have limited space on stage You should use a laptop stand for your octa track It will up out of the way,, you can still.use it coz its right in front you and you have e greatly reduced foot print Yeh flawless awsome👍👍
Nice vid! Good, simple and forever relevant advice for all music making I think; both live and composing in the studio or bedroom. Some beautiful views there! Cheers!
Improvisation is not making up stuff out of nothing. It's practicing to the point where you know what you know so well, you have the freedom to manipulate it without having to think about what you're doing.
Beginner looking for some advice... So i've been dj'ing for prob 10 years, originally using 1210's but for the past 3 years i've been using a Traktor controller and i recently bought a TR-8S just as an addition to dj'ing and messing around on, however this has lead me to want to get into production and potentially live dawless sets. I've got some compensation money coming in from an accident i had at work so i'm going to use the money to buy a dawless studio, i want to make gritty, banging techno, stuff like Fixon, A.Paul, Setaoc Mass, P.E.A.R.L.etc etc. So i've decided on getting the following through some research: Novation Bass Station II , Elektron Analog 4 MkII, Digitakt, Digitone, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 + Tr-8S i already have + a mixer not decided on yet. I'm really torn/confused no matter how many video's i watch whether to get Digitakt & Digitone or Rytm MkII + Octatrack MkII as an addition to Analog 4 MkII. Perhaps there's some other additions or pieces that would be better suited for the sound i want or better combinations. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
You have a great selection of hats Mr T, but you also have great hair. How do you mange to square that particular circle? (guys can talk about this stuff, right?) 💇
You are correct, knowledge is power (scientia potentia est) and you always share a lot. Thanks for all you do. I don't perform live but your ideas make we want to try sometime. Speaking of live, I heard you were going to perform last night at Perfect Circuit, and I was looking forward to it while I was in town (along with performances by Vlad and others), but it must have been a rumor. If you take what your talking about with being comfortable with gear and apply it to any instrument it would sound silly to think this is a bad thing. I’ve played saxophone for 20 years and I’m quite comfortable with it and that never makes me think I should grab a trumpet instead for a gig haha
Ricky, all the love in the comments is giving me butterflies! Love your insights. Im hoping to play live some time. Its producers you like who are so helpful in giving inspiration and technical insight that make me feel im moving forward. Wish i could have hit up namm. Maybe next year. Peace brother and much love.
Ive been using 3 Circuits has my sequencing/drum machines for live. Now I think the launchpad Pro 3 is my new sequencer core. I also had the same issue with low frequency samples being way to bass heavy causing a muddy meldown, live and learn. Also stereo samples are pointless , In 90% of venues there setups are in mono. Hey, Ricky -- great content, of course, because that is what you consistently do! But I'd like to also just say that the sponsorship message on this video was the closest I've seen on YT so far to a really authentic (hate that word, but I do think it works here) integration of sponsor content and 'creator' content -- it made sense and felt real. Yo that is incredible Sean. Thanks for the support man, it means a lot!!
Your a good person brah.
Always enjoy the videos, have a good show.

Saw your Namm videos. You crushed it. I'm getting a Launchpad Pro now.
If you do hit a "wrong note", then go with it.
Let it be part of the music.
Maybe even repeat it.

Great video over all, just like the rest of your content. Take care.
Thanks for the pep talk near the end of the video. I have not played a live dance set since 2005 and I have been second guessing myself if I still have it in me to do again. I feel more confident now after watching this clip.

these videos are so helpful and interesting. thanks ricky
Love ya Ricky xxx
Same to you!! Good hangs at Namm :)
Really good tips. Stripping back the gear to one or two pieces is helping me.
Thanks for your video. You are one of the most inspiring channels on YT. Thanks for sharing all your trials and tribulations with us!
You got a big heart Ricky, thank you very much for this.

Great points, and these are also on point even, if one would not play live sets at all.
A like for the lessons and for that chill background track and that amazing sunset. Thanks for sharing all three with us

Love your videos
Ricky how the hell are you getting such clean audio recording in front of NAMM, those courtyards are hectic!
E P He probably woke up at like 6 hah!
Great video as always Ricky! I don't know if I missed it, but what gear did you finally go with for this show?
Improvisation is not making up stuff out of nothing. It's practicing to the point where you know what you know so well, you have the freedom to manipulate it without having to think about what you're doing.

Ok so you want to do techno so your got a drum machine or sampler then go snyths elecktron snyths just get one and spend time learning it.
You have a great selection of hats Mr T, but you also have great hair. How do you mange to square that particular circle?
(guys can talk about this stuff, right?) 💇
haha genes! my dads still got the full head of hair and he always wore a hat.. maybe that was the secret?
I was gonna say I don't think I've seen Ricky without a hat on then I see great hair!
Yeah I was totally stopping down here to compliment the nice fedora. :)
That hat is crazy
Great stuff, we appreciate you too! I just gotta ask though, where did you get those angled shelves (about 1:45)? I need them in my cluttered life :)
Nailed it yet again (and as always), Ricky. Hope that NAMM is treating you right.
I'll catch it sometime. :-)
Last tip 🤙🏼
If you take what your talking about with being comfortable with gear and apply it to any instrument it would sound silly to think this is a bad thing. I’ve played saxophone for 20 years and I’m quite comfortable with it and that never makes me think I should grab a trumpet instead for a gig haha
I would never imagine you can enable the Indiana Jones' mode ;) great video Rick
Yo thank you for these kind words man. Its all love, and thank you a ton.
Nobody will be able to tell anyways.
Completely off topic brother but i have a Behringer TD3 on its way. And im asking how would one daisy chain it to say an Uno Drum? Do they sync?
Love your music and your videos. But I think that's the first time I've seen you without a hat :-P
Hey Ricky check out the new Tascam Model 12 mixer/recorder.
So far the most promising multitrack recorder for DAWless music I've seen. Overdubbing, effects, and even with midi sync.
Cool vid bro. What is the song in the background?
What brand or where could one get a synth stand as big as the one on your studio.
Whoa sunset beach. 5 minutes from here.
"gets kinda chilly out here" hint hint, if you sold a hoody on your merch site... >_> also, this is the *best* skillshare code/url I've seen out of everyone I follow on RUclips
Kudos -- that's a freakin' hard thing to do.
Haha, thanks man! I wouldn't be as happy if i wasn't making these chords at namm on these new keyboards :)
And we appreciate you too, dude. \m/
NIce Fedora!
When do you do your own Masterclass or Skill-Share Course?
2:59 Disney vampires confirmed.
Ricky, what is the size of that wooden board that you threw together on your setup ?
i think i bought 6 8 foot 2x4's and bolted them together for the table top. so should be 4ft wide
1:41 what type of rack is that against the window?
Each and every advertisement is a tiny death.
i think I like ricky so much I clicked like before i clicked play
Thank you Jarrett! Hope the video doesn't disappoint :P
