Nothing can ever beat this. What a feeling all the way from all vocalists. I've never heard anything like it - and probably never will. Just fantastic!
There is something so subliminal about this song...somehow hearing it calls up all the cliche's and images of the deep sweaty south....the big plantation hopes, the cyprus trees, the iced tea on the porches, the poor black old men somehow regal...the southern belles, the white dresses on beautiful young black women going to southern church...maybe it's just me...maybe its just a southern thang'. Either way, the voice and face of Gillian was perfect for this, she is mesmerizing.
This is perhaps the Ave Maria of our time, the most beautifully melodious, wonderfully nonsensical rock and roll anthems ever to be created by the hands of men...And these folks? Forgetaboutit!
They are playing for the love of the music and it shows. This is as good as it gets, I would give anything to have been there. Moments like this have to happen, they cannot be planned.
or you are inspired when you see that a song this good, done by musicians this great can grab you by the soul and make you want to howl at the moon and play all night long!!!!
I can't decide which one is the best video on youtube: this one or Dave Rawlings Machine (including the OCMS members) with Mumford & Sons playing Wagon Wheel at Bonnaroo.
...magic...just amazing music...these people, in my mind, are sitting on stools and milk cans and porch steps hammering their hearts out...thank you, Gillian and David, thank you Old Crow...I just discovered this - the finest rendition of this I have ever heard...and I'm sorry for myself that years passed-by before I did...I am young again - and I am old and wiser than my experiences - and as all things Gillian and David I am just loving this music...
Definitely. I'm not gonna say it matches the original (which as we all know is one of the greatest recordings in the last 50 years) but it comes real close. Most covers try to rough it up, but the whole point of The Band's impact was that they were taking things back to the roots at a time when everyone was trying to be fake-psych with flowers in their hair! I don't think Big Pink will ever really get the credit it deserves: the entire singer/songwriter generation owes everything to The Weight.
better than the original!? i got much love for old crow and gillian, but the band wrote the damn song. there is nothing better than the band's version on music from big pink.
I believe your comment is crass and unthoughtful. This is music to you (and me also, as it happens) BUT: boy bands etc are liked by young people (mostly) finding their way into music. It would be a shame if people arrived at their musical tastes without their adolescent journeys. I became a teenage musician because I wanted to play punk guitar like the Sex Pistols, but grew out of it, and now play and listen to songs by artists such as Gillian Welch & David Rawlings.
I think it's sad you no longer want to play punk guitar like the sex Pistols, however, are you honestly saying that we let the likes of these manufactured bands such as Boyzone and Westlife shape our children's musical tastes? The likes of Louis Walsh should be up before a tribunal, for crimes against music. If you are coming from a house full of little Bieber fans I can understand, but only up to a point, you have have an ongoing responsibility, as a music fan, to introduce them to REAL MUSIC!
honk if you have been here many times before and STILL find yourself obsessively clicking the favorite button :-)

Gillian's voice gives me cold chills

...................very nicely done y'all
Better than the original in my opinion. I love Gillian's voice, and I love OCMS. Brilliant musicianship, and emotion. What more can you ask for?
If there is a more longing, soulful rendition of this or any other song, I have not heard it. Pure magic.
Favorite video I've seen on youtube
How could someone dislike something so great?
The harmonies are impeccable!
Love to see people playing music that comes from their soul. These fine people feel the music thru their spirit. Fantastic!!!!!!!
this isn't a cover, but the version that the band and the staples singers do in the last waltz is one of the best i've ever heard.

They are playing for the love of the music and it shows. This is as good as it gets, I would give anything to have been there. Moments like this have to happen, they cannot be planned.
This is the best rendition of this song I have heard, and i was around in the sixties when it first came out.
