John Doran of the Quietus meets Mark E Smith of pre-eminent rock group The Fall, in a special Christmas episode of our British Masters series where John interviews the most influential and colourful figures from British popular music history. In part two of the episode, John chats to Mark about his time in a wheelchair, the new EP and The Fall's current steady line up.
In John's own words: "There are only a few things that separate us from the rest of the animal kingdom... the most important of these attributes, is an appreciation of the music of The Fall. This means if you do not listen to such albums as 'Hex Enduction Hour', 'This Nation's Saving Grace' and 'The Unutterable' you are worse than savage. The solution to what ails us is clear -- be less beastly, listen to The Fall"
Previous British Masters have included Gary Numan, Johnny Marr, and Dizzee Rascal.

I did indeed used to see him out and about in Prestwich. Usually coming out of Bargain Booze or sat inside The Forresters. Not that I'd ever approach the bastard as he once pushed me into a wall for having the temerity to exit the gents as he was stumbling in for a piss. He really was a true one off. RIP.
Hands down the best comment I’ve ever read bless u
Being abused by Mark was his version of an autograph or a selfie. He once scowled at me the stuck out his tongue. I left before he ruined the illusion.
Doran played that to perfection. Its a balancing act between humouring him and not acting like a sycophant.
Enjoyed it mate he’s a good interviewer they are almost extinct and he asked some good questions RIP mark
Exactly. Frank Skinner's sycophancy made me wince all the way through his interview. Seemed kinda phoney too.
@@neilsun2521 "OY LUV YEW MAARK!" in a wank brummie accent.
Yeah, skinner's bumlicking evidently bored Mark towards the end.
Exactly. Like, a mutual respect kind of thing. I was never a big Fall fan, but I have always liked Mark E Smith. ✌️
Well said , enjoy your night
There's nothing I like to watch more when I'm pissed than mark smith interviews
As he /you misses the spot,
So wot.
That laugh is infectious
Yes sir...
That Paul McCartney's looking rough.
I bet as macca died in 1966
Very high quality interview all the way through. He has a way of compelling you (even when rambling). Could listen to MES talk for hours. Possibly the funniest human I ever heard. RIP you lovable bastard.
Is there a harder gig in journalism than interviewing Mark E Smith? Taliban press officer?
Huw Evans shane macgowan
Charles Manson ?
you seen Lou Reeds interviews?
Plenty. He always seemed pretty affable to me - yeah, you couldn't get him to follow a premeditated script; he didn't suffer fools and he was liable to take the piss. It's not like he was a prima donna, though.
Robert Fripp from King Crimson I’ve heard was quite an intimidating person to interview. I heard a story about one time he took an interviewer’s question cards and started reading them back to him.
'The Panzer of Wheelchairs'
Ben Johnston VVRRRRRRrrrrrRrRrrr
Priceless
What a good mood he's in. He must have had just the right number of drinks.
he was always laughed through interviews
I love the Fall. Mark is one mad bastard though.
"Do you ever get crazy fans knocking on your door" ? " ...not for long".
Mark has got to a point where his look is again (more or less) matching with his real age.
For anybody thinking that Mark has had a terrile aging, they must consider that for man who hasn´t work out in his life and who by this day still drinks three pints on a interview on absolute daylight, mark has hold on quite well.
Mark could have been much more of a genius with maybe, lets say, only a third part of the abuse he´s taken. Respect the man anyway
***** I´m a deffinetly a fall fan, but come on, there is a lot of things I would have changed if somehow I had control over this music.
I would say that almost half of the songs on their entire carrer are actually not just wacky, but not good, sometimes.
Anyway, try to play that other 50% I´m talking about to a common public. They would go crazy about it and tell you to take some serious therapy.
What bands do you consider as good as the fall ? Just kurious.
@@danielcactus3953 Pere Ubu 🤔
@@danielcactus3953 i think the first decade was all incredible, but the genius started to show less and less as the years went by and the abuse took its toll. so i understand your sentiment.
@@chaunceyloveshack9530 More precisely I would say 79-85 was the pinnacle of the group . After that there were many peaks and troughs .
these two have really funny chemistry
Si si, es interesante la química de un borracho que odia las entrevistas y un adulador que se hace el interesante, nunca voy a entender el morbo de emitir estas entrevistas patéticas
RIP Mark E Smith. What a legend
Love how it starts off with an immediate smackdown "It's not This Morning program d'you know what I mean" HA!
gotta give it to him, he is funny as fuck! lol
An old (now, sadly deceased) friend of mine lived in Salford when Nico was living there--he used to see her at his smack dealers, they both scored off the same bloke.
She lived in Prestwich mid 80's
Smack, granted but where did she go for a snack ? Was there a chippy ?
@@Jlipnicki Yeah, some excellent ones, apparently
I’m so depressed that I didn’t get into The Fall until Mark E. Smith had already died. Little did I know that “Hex Enduction Hour” would wind up being my favorite album of all time just a few months later.
You and me both, man.
This genuinely warms my soul guys :)
I got into the Fall in 2001 and very quickly they were my favourite band. Went to see them live in 2005 and it was all old heads but by 2014 it was a whole range of ages at a fall gig.
feel the same about Mozart.
It's never too late. The music will last forever. Pure genius!
Same! Makes me sad i didn’t listen to my dad 10 years ago when he told me to give it a go. Great album.
Forever grateful I discovered the fall, found them when I was 19, I’m 21 now and will have their brilliance for the rest of my life. What a pleasure.
"...the Panzer of wheelchairs" XD
i love how his pint is magically replenished
like his liver.
Have you ever tried playing a Fall 12" record at 45rpm? Beezer! Smithy sounds like Les Dawson doing a fishwife impression.
Mark E Smith laughing at his own jokes is the best laugh. RIP
Cheekily breaking the fourth wall after his jab at the Arctic Monkeys is just the best thing ever 😂
Had the pleasure of seeing The Fall at the Lead-mill, Sheffield. Mark was aware and a legend , we need people back in music like this.
Didn't understand half of what he said but still loved it. There's no one else quite like him.
It’s not This Morning program is it
The interviews I rewatch most are Mark E Smiths and Lemmys 👍👍
That's exactly what I been watching all day 😂
And John Lydon
"Can I have this?" Classic.
Johns big sigh right at the end, like he just made it through a war
The best part of this is Mark just having one of the records the interviewer gives him to sign at the end cos he doesn't have one himself.
He ain't like everybody else so don't expect the same.
This was Great. Mark E. was in such a Good Mood. Havin' Fun.
when are you interviewing Julian Cope fer chrissakes
Mark E Smith and Stone Cold Steve Austin the only 2 people I know who have ever had a designated beer giver.
Oh man, he's funny. Sad to see now but he wouldn't give a shit. He lived his own life.
Matt Johnson please.
1:00 that look speaks volumes
Rest in peace, pub philosopher
Possibly one of the best interviews I've ever seen anywhere ever!!!
Mark, amazed that his album exists, asks where it's available. Priceless.
5:24 loooool XDDD
How on earth did Mark E Smith become one of the most lovable frontmen ever?? O_o
Awesome... he's such a nice guy sometimes!
Stephen Hawking ...........a Mark E Smith side project ?
LOLOL
The panzer of wheelchairs! 😂😂😂
Not really an interview. Just Mark being Mark.
Q: 'Do you ever get crazy fans knocking on your door?' MES: 'Not for long....'
Legend..but he came over as someone who couldn't handle his drink....
Might've had to do with his health problems .........
Doran did great job.
"The Panzer of wheelchairs..." Fucking Smith, one of the funniest fellows ever...
"The men in black, yeah?"
After watching this two-parter for the 500th time I should probably chuck my ten-bob in.
Mark E. Smith was the only real, proper genius western civilisation has ever produced. When I say "genius," I mean a mind that is separate from any external influence yet at same time able to absorb it and interpret said influences in such as way that it the end result is so much better.
The man could read a shopping receipt and in 30 seconds read out a bizarre, beautiful, madly sci-fi interpreteation of it and keep people guessing about it for years after.
Nothing will ever compare to The Fall in my lifetime or anyone elses'. I love it when people say they don't get The Fall. It leaves more for the rest of us.
Be less beastly...listen to The Fall.
@garethdavis5491
little smith was a smeagol lookalike pisss head way over romanticized who babbles a lot of drunkenn, booze swaaat gibberish when ingterviewed...and it laghinly passes offf as 'geniius.'
Please carry on making these! There's plenty of other British Masters out there!
Great to see that theres life for Richard and Judy after their chat show. Great interview.
Love Mark, but he always seemed to be interviewed by people that seem to be in awe of him, a bit like Lydon, Zappa etc. It would have been nice to see him/them ‘taken on’ a bit more, by someone with some balls.
The Wealdstone Raider tribute act
nobody lives where i live still
Have watched this over and over, John Doran is excellent, but borderline terrified!
The Real Deal - greatly missed
The great and the only Mark E Smith
"longest stable line up of the fall", famous last words
Love the Rowley Birkin QC in him.
brilliant stuff, really enjoyed it.
The Walder Fraye of.... Something??....
Brilliant interview
If you pay attention to Shaun Rider's attitude, swagger, and poetry style....it's very similar to Mark E. Smith.
I haven't heard Happy Monday's in years. My brother loves them
@@MaliciousChickenAgenda awww it sounds like your brother is nice.
Not really, Shaun sobered up yrs ago.
R.I.P Mark seen The Fall in Liverpool years ago in the 80's
john doran and luke turner make journalism mean something
Top Geezer is Mark
'the gloup'
"...they're so happy to be here..."
Did Mark put his trousers on back to front which Criss cross stole
Brilliant! National treasure.
the interviewer trying to stick to his 'script' ha ha ha
May I suggest this video to be watched with the auto-generated captions on. The captions turn out nothing like what Mark is saying (I am guessing here because I understood 50% of what he says at best) but the auto-generated captions read like Fall lyrics.
I don't remember giving them permission to film in my front room
Shame I moved to Prestwich 5 years too late......
ta for that John. I love a good MES interview
MES RIP
I remember bacck when MES was in a wheelchair, calling it the PANZER of wheechairs :)
I like Arctic pumpkins.
Love this guy..listen to The Fall still and feel marginally contented, because I don't do joy, and I adore Mark E. Smith.
He's looking quite well. Looks like we've got a few years left.
Care to predict how long I've got?
This has aged badly
@@popyarns462 He managed another 4 years.
@@Robhalifax I know. I assumed that you were hoping for a little more life than that. But fair enough if you had such an accurately bleak prognosis in mind, if so you nailed it.
@@popyarns462he said a few years and he was correct
Metal Jesus was good on this.
Looking forward to the next album
MES gives the perfect balance to the Royals. King of the Britons.
I can't understand 3 quarters of what he is saying but I like it...
Laughing at nothing .ahh ach g ha
.fookin ach kakakam .k ow what I mean know what I mean
If you squint, you can see a young MES. Freaky.
Does anyone know where this interview was recorded?
comedy gold RIP Mark
He was class
This is the best MES interview out there, imo. 🤣
Fookin guitars!
What did he say about lou Reed anybody catch that?
haha classic.
Yes Mark !!!
Mark E Smith. Lovely
Should rent his face out,
6:47 the quintessential MES sound
he was right about the cameras
This was great till he had him sign his ipad. Gross.
So that negates the incredible interview and questions? Personally I don’t really care autographs but John Doran could still be a cool guy just because he wants mark e Smith’s autograph
Doran is a nerd
