Sometimes there is the score displayed for an orchestra on You Tube videos. (That's the closest I'll get to an orchestra). Is there an indication of what tyoe of instrument is used at the beginning of the score? Or is that up to the musician to decide, and the score is the true score?
Yes, usually in the beginning of each movement/act you will see the instruments listed to the left of the very first measure. The more instruments, the more lines. Even in the same piece, each movement/act might have more or less instruments. Usually the composer does label what each instrument will play. However, sometimes they are not the best at arranging which will lead to someone else possibly adding more instruments, splitting lines amongst players... ect. Conductors will often arrange works that are simpler to fit a bigger orchestra so there is a lot of innovation based on the "true score" This is actually a big topic and I could create a whole video about it.
