Three layers of rainbow rolling for this linocut print - rainbow rolls can be as bold or as subtle as you like and are a helpful way of getting more ‘bang’ for your buck when printing.

Thanks for these videos. I'm going through the archive of a couple years now and they're all very interesting. I'm a hobby painter, so I find any sources I can with dealing with various oil/acrylic mediums from other art forms and pry some useful tidbits from them. I've always heard of this form called colour blending or gradient colouring, not rainbow. It's another neat little thing on how a similar thing is named differently by different groups.

A wonderful demonstration of inking virtuousity Laura! I have done rainbow rolls before as one layer but this idea of doing 3 layers in 2 colours each to get 6 colours on the print has just blown me away! It's one of those "Why didn't I see this possibility earlier?" moments for me. Thank you!!

we call the boxcutters "Stanley knives" too in the states ... "if" they've been made by Stanley Tools (who makes the best ones) ... if not, they're just boxcutters as you said.
But its a loose name, kind of like asking for a Kleenex - even when it's a Puffs brand tissue you're pointing at.
Or a Coke, when its really a Pepsi.

Great inspiration again, thanks Laura and Ben. Thanks for the heads up on "rainbow" rolling large areas with a blended central roller and single colour rollers for the ends. Brilliant idea! I know you mostly only use extender reduced colours but some of those you used here looked like they had white in them???

These are all mixed with white - I do tend towards extender most of the time, but also use white in mixing sometimes

Laura, I haven't tried this myself yet so its not a pointed question ... if you've only set yourself up with a few 4" brayers like I have done (and didn't get a long one like you've used here today) but would still like to create a kind of "rainbow" rolled print effect on an image - could you take turns rolling 3 shades of ink, one with each breyer, and gradually overlapping some on the block successfully without looking cheap or cheezy? If yes, would you have any additional tips or rules to follow to get the effect right? Thanks!!

Hi yes you could certainly do that, the bleed won’t be as smooth, but it’s perfectly possible to get a colour change that way
