I could listen to Stewart for hours. He paints pictures in words almost as viscerally and evocatively as Victor did with a brush or pencil.

One of the best things about Stewart is his book shelves bend in the middle as much as mine do !

As someone who gets seasick on damp grass I have the greatest sympathy for the crew travelling to the island.

Stewart was always my favorite, even more than Helen or Mick. His ability to cut through the "noise" and see what was really going on in an investigation was always magical.

Wonderful interview. I think Stewart is very interesting - it is great to hear his perspective and his true understanding of the whole process and the sense of place. I always thought he was a great scientist, but a man of few words. We can all learn from him.

That’s one of my favourite episodes! I think I’ve watched it four or five times, if you haven’t seen it i do recommend it to you.

Stewart makes the same point Alex Kingston did in her recent book, which was “We study the past to learn about ourselves.” Excellent.

This reminds me of the book by B. G. Wilkinson, Truth Triumphant. About chapter 7 he gives the true history of the person that the Roman Catholic Church refers to as St. Patrick. This Patrick has a story that begins around 360 AD. He is an apostle of the Christian church, not of Catholic faith, since his father was a 'Presbyter' , or what a Catholic would call, Bishop. No celibacy here since he was a married man.
He was captured and enslaved. Being taken from 'Briton' to the North in Ireland for 7 years. It was there that he learned of the Christian faith.
This is, I believe, why the one chapels was older and on a different axis. The Christians, not being of pagan faith, did not observe directions of burial as pertaining to the 'Sun god', East and West, as do the Romans did, and still do. This video is one of the students that stemmed from the teaching schools of Patrick.

Stewart made a very good point that archaeology isn't just about digging, or geophys, or the landscape part - it's a mixture of all of them. And it makes it all the more fascinating!

Thank you for this. I especially liked the choice of the island for the tranquility and isolation of the monks. The excavation episode highlighted the pilgrim influx and all that comes with that, whereas this episode talked about the importance of the monks' day apart from dealing with the crowds. Hermit Island with Benedictine monks - I wonder what was the horarium of the first two monks 🙂

In my next innings I want to be a landscape archaeologist. Next time a physicist or maybe an astronaut. One life just isn't enough for all the information that's out there.

I am certain this is not the place to ensure you see this - but find no other avenue. Avid viewer (sounds better than rabid we would say here in the US) and I wanted to make a suggestion for the new series. Please please include Steve Winterton from the WARRIORS episode, the vet who was getting his degree in archaeology. It would be such a full circle for him to appear on the show as an archaeologist.

stewart is right about flat bottomed boats, I was in the U.S. Navy on a flat bottomed ship (an LST) and I actually saw shipmates get sea sick in port if the water was slightly rough

While I'm very happy hearing these new stories and gaining new insight on the dig,i was a bit disappointed by the title of the video. This is more of a review on the episode rather than a commentary. A commentary would mean they would be watching the episode itself and commenting or pausing it on different points to elaborate. If they did that, that would be wonderful!! Keep up the good work!

I don't remember this one first time around, very interesting - the whole business of sacred sites being re-used, I guess it's kind of obvious really. Reviewng the programmes it's interesting to note just how much sense Stewart makes, relying on careful consideration of the evidence that he gathers before offering a view. This is in contrast to some of the digging Archaelogists, especially the post processualists who go on on flights of fantasy with only a minimal consideration of what's in front of their noses

It’s just an older in-laptop webcam. That slight halo effect is a dead giveaway. The filters on the newer ones, that do what you’re describing, put the background distinctly out of focus. It’s very easy to spot them.
Stewart looks like he’s using an app on a 4K cell phone (my middle son has one, that I’ve borrowed before for just that reason). You can almost read the titles on the spines of the books on his shelf behind him.
