7:23 is where the magic starts for me. The rebel base is now in the Death Star's firing range, one single strike, and the galaxy's hope for freedom dies. Our only hope is riding on a farm boy on the battlefield, and now he's the only remaining fighter, but in hot pursuit by our big bad. Vader's target computer locks on, "I have you now!" That's it, Luke's done, Vader has-, Wait? What? The scoundrel smuggler came back! He actually came back to help us! Vader is out of the way now, but the big threat is still present. Luke fires, the blast goes down the shaft! Direct hit! But can the blast make it? The Death Star is seconds away from firing, something is about to explode, but what? The Death Star, or the rebel base? BOOM! The Empire's ultimate weapon is destroyed! The Rebels are saved! Confidence against the empire is now in the hearts in the Galaxy, and it's all thanks to a farm boy, a smuggler, a wookie, two droids, a crazy old man, and a beautiful princess.
You take your best shot with everything on the line and don’t know if it was good enough for 25 seconds of agonizing suspense. BOOM! Makes everything worthwhile.
I like to imagine seeing it from Vaders perspective, you're kicking ass, then all of a sudden your fighter is hit hard by another ship and spins out; the death star, Tarkin, and everyone you were just with are now spinning violently, the emergency lights are going off in your cockpit and you hear your squad burn to death over the comms. It dawns on you that you've just lost. Then all at once - everything becomes blinding white and explodes into oblivion with a nuclear rumble, and you're left adrift in space with nothing but your own thoughts, the sole survivor.
@@SithisShapedHole Vader spent the entire flight of shame wondering how he lost his focus on the overall situation using the force, perhaps because he was annoyed about Luke persistently evading his target lock and was distracted by taking that a bit personally or sensing another force adept.

8:07 I've watched this scene more times than I count, but every time those horns start blasting I always tense up with anxiety, and I think that speaks to master of music John Williams is
Actually, the plan was for the Y-wings to make the trench run first, as they're bombers and more suited to that role, while the X-wings kept the turbolasers and fighters busy, as their greater speed made them more suitable for that purpose. Remember, Red Leader says "I'm gonna cut across their axis and try and draw their fire." Of course, all but one of the Y-wings were destroyed, so the X-wings took over the bombing runs.
I had this soundtrack when I was ten or so, and I remember listening to this theme a whole bunch. In fact, I listened to it so much that I know how the *entire thing* goes from beginning to end by memory. Nearly a decade later and I still am not tired of this piece. It's pretty much nine minutes of John Williams at his best. There's not a single part of this that doesn't get me pumped. Easily my favorite battle music across the entire series.
Basically it takes inspiration from Mars and all the Holst planet themes and improves on it. It's a musical masterpiece. Best battle theme in any movie.

My favorite part of that is 7:03, the part right after Obiwan tells Luke to use the Force. That is where Like's theme comes in determinated and with anticipation. Later, the same theme develops with climatic tension all through.
I know why the title crawl had to keep its music, but it does make me sad realizing that Luke has kind of lost his theme that used to be unique to him.
Greatest scene in any of the films. And mostly because of this track. Simply iconic. For me, nothing has ever been as brilliant as The Trench Run. It's so basic, so simple, yet so original at the same time. And with the perfect suspenseful score to cover it too. John Williams deserves all the respect in the world for his legendary scores on Star Wars 1-6 and Jaws. Just perfection.

Star Wars would still be enjoyable without the music, but IMO the music is what sells it. The timing and tone really sets the mood and draws you in to the story. Take this piece for example, you can hear the building desperation, the fear and determination of the pilots as they face a near impossible task. Then when it is over the seer relief not necessarily at victory, but simply at having survived.
Lucas once said Star Wars is 50% Williams, and I think he's right on. There's moments in the franchise where it seems like the movie is serving the soundtrack than the other way around (in a good way, that is).
@@SnatchBandegrip I appreciate that Lucas chose orchestral soundtracks rather than the electronic rock music that was popular with movies at the time. If you like John Williams' stuff, Gustav Holst is a good composer to listen to. Williams got a lot of inspiration from Holst's the Planets suite.
Max Scheibenpflug Kinda odd to think that SOTE was first released on a console, when normally it works best when ported from a computer platform. I happen to have the PC version, but two problems for it exist: installing, and configurating it to avoid crashing as best as possible, not counting the FMVs glitching about.
Is it physically possible to pack this much epicness into 9 minutes? No - it's impossible, I'm just dreaming listening to this - it never really happened.
@@andyjames1959 I always feel bad for Dack Ralter when he died in the Battle of Hoth. In the Expanded Universe/Legends he had it real bad as a child of political prisoners on Kessel locked up but he managed to escape with the help of a rebel friend. The kid had so much potential, but that's the price of war.
6:49 to 8:30 was probably one of the greatest moments of my entire childhood. When I first saw this movie in '97 on VHS when I was five years old, my mind melted. The Star Wars series has continued to be one of my favorites and Episode IV as a standalone movie has remained in my top three favorite movies I've ever watched period.
Love how Williams incorporates both the empire score and the tattooine score into one great piece of music. It shows Luke's journey, from a simple farmer boy in the beginning accompanied by the easy carefree "binary suns" score, to the brave warrior who destroys the Death Star, accompanied by a more intense score.
I am a school music teacher and this piece is one of the finest examples available of popular 'high' music for teaching myriad aspects of musical theory and aesthetics, particularly the last 5 minutes, which are a lesson in how variations on and the multiple interplay of leitmotifs bring transcendence to this scene (and the film as a whole). My students hate me because I make them watch the scene with just images and score (no sound effects or dialogue), but I think they begrudgingly get my point when they finally realize how much of the emotional and spiritual energy of the scene is carried by the music. Of course, a million hats off to George, Marcia, Richard, Paul, Ben (Burtt, that is) and John (yes, Dykstra) among the several others who created this cinematic moment, but without this music...well, I'll let you fill in the blanks. I have never understood the ignorance of some critics (esp. during he mid to late 80s when Star Wars was - believe it or not - somewhat out of style!) who dismissed this genre of composition as 'Romantic' and 'Wagnerian' - well, friggin' duh!!!!! That's the whole point: Williams knew exactly what he was doing when he composed this (consider the markedly different style of his 'Close Encounters' score from the same year) and has said as much (his musical knowledge is vast, whether or not you care for his style; he deliberately references Elgar in the throne room procession music [the original liner notes from the 1977 release have him saying he was aiming for a 'Land of Hope and Glory' sound] as he cannily - but tenderly - references Vaughn-Williams in 'War Horse' and 'Copland' in 'Lincoln'). People forget that way back in the day he also composed for Robert Altman's "Images" - a weird mix of of Baroque classicism and avant garden percussion, and for Altman's "The Long Goodbye" in which a single jazz standard melody is used over and over again in multiple genres (and is even referenced sarcastically in the dialogue of one scene). Ah, well, I've pontificated enough - thanks for the detailed outline accompanying the post. For others who are interested in older J.W. stuff and its intelligence, check out the 'Fortress of Solitude' music for "Superman" (1978), another masterclass in the interweaving of motifs - only this time it is three different motives representing a single person that collide and mix as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman fuse into one...or do they?
How long can Williams hold out the highest tension of the most dramatic musical cue of the film? Twenty full seconds -- 8:08 to 8:28. Twenty seconds when the whole audience is waiting to die with the Rebels. Then ... we live.
Many moments in life are like this, we take our best shot when all the chips are down, with all of our courage, but we hang in suspense, it’s effect doesn’t happen immediately, then our enemies suddenly implode before our eyes. It can take minutes, hours, months or years. Always have the guts to use the force and fire your torpedoes.
1:10 This scene gives me goosebumps everytime! I love the way the X-Wings make a roll and approach the surface! Also, am I the only one who hears the shots of the turbolasers when listening to this? :D
If you play this while driving on Interstate or some busy highway with cars to your right and left, the claustrophobic driving conditions and high speeds really taps into this piece.
6:17 to 9:06: When you're just under three minutes from meeting the submission deadline for a big essay... and you just, only just, manage to sink that bucket, :).
Williams represents the TIE fighter trying to get a lock by swerving side to side in the music - it's just brilliant, as he uses a cross-rhythm in lower strings to show it trying to lock on from behind .... It makes you want to get a fly-swatter ... "go away!" Brilliant music.
Everybody else is saying how 6:50 is their favorite part of the music, but mine is between 5:36 and 6:19. You can clearly see in your mind Vader and his TIE fighters chasing Red Squadron down in the trench at full throttle. The whole scene smells of desperation, and I absolutely love it.

Classic dialogue 8-^).
"I Have you now!"
"Several fighters have broken off from the main group, com with me."
"Stay in a attack formation"
"The Force is strong with this one."
Under appreciated comment.
If I had a time machine, I would go back to opening night of Star Wars just to see what it was like the first time this movie was screened.

Star Wars has the *best* OST of any film(s) ever.
Any films music composed by john williams is a masterpiece
Its really weird listening to this with out all the pew pew pewing
I know right, even then it's all still playing out in my head.
Dee-dee-dedededededeeeeee!
that’s some crazy stuff right here in a galaxy far, far away.
"Lock S-foils in attack position"
Let him go stay on the leader
This is Gold leader, we are starting are attack run.
Stay on target! Stay on target!

I will.
At 6: 48, wow, that's just FANTASTIC. The work of a genius. Simply unforgettable!!!
The memories from Rogue Leader are strong with this one! By far one of my favorite Star Wars games of all time!
I can almost hear the beeps and boops of the targeting computer
7:45
it's so weird how I can picture this whole scene and know what's happening just from the music. I love it!!!
That's how great the music is.
The first minute or so sends me back to playing Shadows of the Empire on my N64...
Max Scheibenpflug Kinda odd to think that SOTE was first released on a console, when normally it works best when ported from a computer platform. I happen to have the PC version, but two problems for it exist: installing, and configurating it to avoid crashing as best as possible, not counting the FMVs glitching about.
It was the Boba Fett level wasnt it?
@@SkywalkerFoe no, this soundtrack was from the second level, Escape from Echo Base.
After that, it was the intro of the first level of Rogue Leader on GameCube.
7:07 The build up is badass
The base on 7:39…gives me the chills when activating the laser on the Death Star!
Porkins!! Pull up!

+vanguardduelist What did I tell you about calling me Porkins?
Is it physically possible to pack this much epicness into 9 minutes?
No - it's impossible, I'm just dreaming listening to this - it never really happened.
Best Epic Scene of all the Star Wars "Your'e all Clear Kid lets blow this thing and Go Home"
5:36 - 6:18
This is like the definition of building suspense.
It’s my favorite part of the whole track actually!
John Williams really elevated Star Wars with his legendary soundtracks.
8:46 Lego Star Wars anyone?

Yes it pays when you unlock something after you beat a level I think

John Williams really did an epic job with the soundtracks of this series
Daniel Brown CGI "Let go, Luke"

"Use the Force, Luke." When Obi-Wan's voice comes in, I still tear up. What a phenomenal score.

Tie pilot 1- ok mr vader.
Tie pilot 2- I'll help, but can u wait like 10 minutes? I gotta go take a sh*t
Any time I need someone’s help at work, I say that to them in my best Darth Vader voice.
I've seen this film more times than I can count, and I'm still always on the edge of my seat during the climax. Bravo to John Williams.
Porkins hero of the battle of the taco bell. "PORKINS PULL OUT WE HAVE KETCHUP AT HOME" "Almost there!"
Malcolm MacInnis Dear god, my sides! 😂
Porkins: No I'm going for the Dorito shell, AGH!
Who tf puts ketchup on a taco
*Porkins running to the bathroom after eating at Taco Bell:*

Porkins would have survived if he just pulled up :/
There's no question any more.
This is the greatest score in the history of cinema.

_"Use the Force, Luke...!"_
Those minor key horns are getting louder, Luke! I can't hold them off much longer!
5:56 this part is pure suspense imagine people in the theater probably bitting there fingernails and on the edge of there seats.
Biggs man always felt bad for him
As a guy that played rogue squadron, this part of music was so anxiety inducing when you have to go through the Death Star trench
@@andyjames1959
I always feel bad for Dack Ralter when he died in the Battle of Hoth. In the Expanded Universe/Legends he had it real bad as a child of political prisoners on Kessel locked up but he managed to escape with the help of a rebel friend. The kid had so much potential, but that's the price of war.
I can only image that tension being released when the Death Star blew in 1977, the roof lifting off of the theater.
7:47
How can a happy melody become a desperate and nervous one?
Han Solo: GREAT SHOT KID THAT WAS ONE AND IN A MILLION!!!!
Obi-Wan: Remember the Force will be with you always.
5:45 feel the tension build
1:10 This scene gives me goosebumps everytime! I love the way the X-Wings make a roll and approach the surface! Also, am I the only one who hears the shots of the turbolasers when listening to this? :D

Brilliant!
If you play this while driving on Interstate or some busy highway with cars to your right and left, the claustrophobic driving conditions and high speeds really taps into this piece.
I could watch just these 9 minutes and call it a successful movie night
6:17 to 9:06: When you're just under three minutes from meeting the submission deadline for a big essay... and you just, only just, manage to sink that bucket, :).
Nick Vannan HaHaHa ,you are right 🤣🤣
5:35 is one of the most tense songs i've heard in star wars
Williams represents the TIE fighter trying to get a lock by swerving side to side in the music - it's just brilliant, as he uses a cross-rhythm in lower strings to show it trying to lock on from behind ....
It makes you want to get a fly-swatter ... "go away!"
Brilliant music.
I've narrowed it down to between 0:00 and 9:06
7:37 Freaking chills❤️
