  • On October 27, 2022, on closing night of the film series Mexico Maleficarum: Resurrecting 20th Century Mexican Horror Cinema, the Academy Museum hosted a screening of Las amantes del señor de la noche (1983) and Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas (1977) in the Ted Mann Theater.
Prior to the screening, Abraham Castillo Flores, guest programmer of Mexico Maleficarum, discussed the films and their creators: Daring and prolific actress Isela Vega, who made _Las amantes del señor de la noche_, the first folk horror film in Mexico directed by a woman. And cultural maverick and iconoclast Juan López Moctezuma, who directed _Alucarda_, one of the most famous Mexican horror films ever made.
Later in the evening, Castillo Flores interviewed Isela Vega’s daughter Shaula, who reflected on how her mother’s dark sense of humor came through in _Las amantes_, the aura of sensuality in the film, and the extent to which Isela valued her freedom.
Generously supported by Televisa Foundation-Univision Foundation in celebration of Mexican Cinema. Academy Museum film programming supported by the Richard Roth Foundation. Mexico Maleficarum has the community partnership and support provided by El Cine, the Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today program of Hola Mexico, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.
