There are certain songs that are played in some movies at a crucial moment, mostly a tragic moment. For me, this was one of those songs. When Queen Latifah's character got shot up in "Set It Off", they played this, and it almost made me cry. Another example is when they played "A Change Is Gonna Come" in the movie "X" right before "Malcolm X" was assassinated.
As a black person, I reject the notion that either song "narrates most black peoples life [sic]." There's this false narrative that most black people lead lives that are so much harder than the lives that others lead. This is not true. To the extent that black people live in poverty, they suffer the challenges that impoverished people of all races suffer. So, you might say this song narrates most poor people's lives. However, I'm not naive enough to believe that well-off people aren't just as miserable as poor people. We are all great at finding ways to feel miserable. I'm tired of the notion that black = struggling and downtrodden. Life is easy when you make good choices and realize that suffering is optional. In any case...I also love both scenes in both movies and the songs definitely help to draw out the emotion.
