I feel as though the song is her reflecting on her younger years and acknowledging that she messed up sometimes, but she doesn't regret any of it as it shaped who she is today. The Mickey Mouse shirt is in reference to her playing Hannah Montana years ago and her relationship with Disney. I appreciate the true emotion behind the video, especially knowing that she could see her mum on the other side of the camera dancing and that making her cry is so raw to me. One of her best songs in my opinion.
I agree. She is moving into a new phase of life where she’s not as interested in being a wild child anymore; but at the same time, she doesn’t regret being that wild child - that was an age appropriate way to act at the time.
This is a sweet story I heard. When this music video was filmed, Miley Cyrus's mom Tish Cyrus was able to be there and watch her daughter during filming and was somehow inside the camera and her being there made Miley cry because they are super close.
Her mum was behind the camera dancing and trying to make her smile after she saw her getting too emotional during the first verse I think
I see so many people that didn’t like the way you can tell she wasn’t “live singing”, and I totally respect that, but for me, it made the music video even better because you can tell how personal this song is to Miley. The way we get to see her this emotional and raw made it 100x better in my opinion. Especially for us who grew watching her and seeing how society and the media always ostracized her as a crazy lost cause just because she was having fun during her teenage years/20s

I agree. It was very intentional. She didn't even try to line up the video singing with the real vocals. Especially on the "woahs". I'm ok with that. She will do live versions of this that get recorded too.

Couldn't agree more. The fact that it was done in one take shows that it wasn't edited in fake tears and everything. Her mouth not matching the lyrics shows her raw emotion.

Song is pretty much about her crazy phase she went through. And how she's remembering the mistakes and fun she had during it, taking it as learning lessons. She is now looking towards a new phase maturity.

She should still make it look like she is singing it. This looks like a bad lip sync done by some random fan that doesn't really know the words to the song. Her music video for jaded is just as bad as far as the lip syncing. Maybe she just isn't good at it idk I haven't seen most of her videos but it seems like in the newer ones she is being lazy in that department. Both are good songs and I guess that is what matters the most in the end, but it is definitely something that kind of takes away from the song when watching the video.
@byoung1991 not if that was the point she was trying to make.. It's an emotional lyric she was crying. Obviously, it wasn’t going to be perfect, and she probably preferred that way. It gives it a more raw presentation. INTERPRETATION IS KEY
I know you focus on the vocals but I think here you got so caught up you couldn't follow the message which is beautiful.
I think she doesn't mean she cannot be fun or crazy anymore. I think she's singing that she has changed because she has matured...and I think the point is that she's singing this to a listener/person (when she sings "you say...you say...you say") that possibly doesn't like the way she has evolved, doesn't recognise her or can't connect with her anymore...that's the impression I get at least
The surgery she had on her vocal chords were mostly involuntary. She was in a house fire caused by the Califonia Fires and she inhaled too much smoke in it, it damaged her vocal chords almost beyond repair but the surgery saved her from having to retire so young. It was either lose her voice without the surgery or have the surgery and save her voice and career in one fell swoop.
Interesting I believe she had an Episode on Hannah Montana where she had to have a surgery to save her vocal chords too

I think the husky sound gives her a unique voice - which can be potentially more important than range or other measures of vocal quality.

I think the "I use to be fun" is referring to the dangerous, self-destructive "fun" that she did more of when you was younger.
I feel like the first part before “ooooh” is hannah montana and after “oooh” is miley idk i think its just me

i know you always mean well with these videos, but on the topic of her lip syncing, i think anyone would find it hard singing about their life in such a vulnerable way, which i think made her slip up sometimes due to how emotional she was, you can also tell there's a verse where she almost doesnt start singing the corrcte word but nevertheless i think it gives it such a raw feeling, i love it

Fairly sure this song is about her sobriety
She's just saying that she used to do some dumb things in her life. Like partying, and doing drugs. Now, she's realizing that all that stuff didn't make her happy. Now she's ready to move on to the next chapter of her life. She's not saying that she isn't going to have fun anymore.

Honestly I wish this was a reaction to her actual singing than how she mimes it in her music video. We all know Miley can sing, she doesnt need to prove it in a music video. Its a music video, of course shes not singing live or claiming she is. And I think its beautiful she was feeling the lyrics rather than focusing on how it might look in post, because this is a culmination of critique on her behaviour after disney, its probably very emotional for her to remember it.
I don’t see it as “I can’t be myself anymore” I just see it as growing up. At some point most people mature and stop doing to crazy shit they did as teens/20somethings, not only because at some point you think “this is stupid why am I doing this” but also because your body can’t keep up as well as it did. So you slow down and then the people around you who didn’t slow down are like “what happened you used to be fun” and the only reason you have available is “I grew up”
Voice overs always bother me when they are as noticeable. To hear the song sang with two versions, one for radio and one for the music video, it would have been felt a little more.
I understand why you got distracted by the bad lipsynching (i do too) but that's not supposed to be the point of focus for VOCAL COACH. Anyway, if u wanna watch her real performance, i suggest the backyard sessions.
I’m not a vocal coach, and I was struggling with the disconnect between the song and the visuals, if they don’t match, it’s obvious, and I find it distracting
For me, this song is about her growing up. People expect all this craziness from her, because that is what she used to do. She was known for her wild and free phase. However, Miley has grown up. She looks back fondly at her past, but that's it. It's the past. She's no longer that young and crazy girl. IDT growing up means you lose your wild and free spirit all together. I just think it means you know better so you do better, with some fun along the way.
I agree with you, I know that she was emotional but it's a huge pet peeve of mine when the lip syncing in videos isn't synced and you can actively tell they aren't singing.

Listening to her voice and the lyrics got me emotional, but I totally understand the part you're obsessing over! I have watched reactions to this video on more than one occasion and I didn't see the same things you aren't. No "w" mouth movement, no oh lip movement on the ohs. Very much looks lip synched, which I don't care for in quite a few videos. There are people out there who can lip synch to perfection, but you can tell they are not singing live a good amount of times. That is more forgivable (unless something is labeled live and it's crystal clear it's not) than bad lip synching in a video where you know it's not live. You're the only one who has said anything about it. Love Miley, but she didn't put enough effort in in this one, just my opinion! Not worth a lot, but still. Love the song and vocals though! Great reaction, thank you!

For me, this is about the part of growing up where you stop living for other people and for what they want or expect, and growing into who you are, livong for you and not others peoples enjoyment. Kind of saying the me who lived for others was me, but the me I am now is more authentic. I have no regrets, but I'm not going back to the way it was.
I love this song, every time it comes on the radio I crank it right up. Felt the same way when I watched the music video, I'm nowhere near a professional but the lip sync was off and it didn't look like they recorded her singing and then dubbed it over, which is how it's usually done for music videos, but that she literally lip synced. Which makes sense if this was filmed at a live event, but it kinda detracts from the emotion of the song for me. Absolute banger though.

I don't think she's saying she can't be crazy or fun i think shes saying shes not as crazy as she use to be and people are mad shes changed and people are mad about it.
I knew she wasn’t singing live because the lip sync wasn’t perfect, but I still felt like crying because it took me back to my younger self. I’m 71 now and as I look back, there are things I did when I was young (not because I felt freer then, but because I was young and less bright) that I would never have considered doing at 35 or more years of age. My choices weren’t as public, and maybe that’s why they didn’t follow me as much as they have her. Still, this song moves me whenever I hear it.
You need to react to midnight sky, even the whole album plastic heart. It's her best album, rock, edgy and great vocals. and to the can't be tamed music video.
Her voice is pretty damaged from smoking, reinkes edema, surgery and abusing her voice but her voice has always been naturally deep and raspy her whole life. You can hear it even in Hannah Montana

i agree that Miley Cyrus was too physically subdued until toward the end of the music video, so it seemed a bit of an odd choice to me too. i really like this song's lyrics and tone! her voice is still great, even though it sounds a bit gravelly

Hey Audrey! Music videos are the Cheesey Poofs of song performance. They are 95% process, and another 5% process on top of that. I've seen her performances on YT and a girl can sing. I'd blame the the director for removing Miley's heart and soul (and voice, whisky and "cigarettes" not withstanding) from the dead center on the vid. Miley, unlike, Baby, got put in the corner?

I have seen your videos and it's only two videos of Miley Cyrus which don't describe her talent and capability of her voice. I love your videos but I think you don't know really what Miley does. I watched your videos of other musicians and in their music videos they also lip sync but you didn't even mentioned it, because you have felt in love with them in the first place. So I am asking you to do more Miley Cyrus videos because after that it will cover your opinion fully. Especially live videos, because her genre is really wide.
And you have right, because you focused so much on the lip syncing it ruined really your video. But if you listen carefully again on the lyric you will understand what she is saying and why she made this video.

People like Miley because she is pretty and upbeat. She is not a very good singer and her voice is shaky! Even without the shaky voice, she cannot sing well. Especially compared to real singers like Arianna Grande (I actually don't like AG but she can sing)
