- Spring is here and early planting is near ! So its time to build those new raised beds ! In this video I show you how we did just that . Join me as my little helper and I construct the first of two beds throughout a fluctuation of classic New England spring weather !

Glad I am not the only person who does things the "easy" way.Hard work builds character. Those are some big logs, I will not complain about the small ones I have to manhandle from now on.

a) get some big logs to act as borders
b) dig holes around the edges to make the frame and put the logs in
c) fill the center with smaller logs, branches, twigs, and leaf debris, in that order
d) put the dirt back on top
e) water the hell out of it
f) plant some stuff in it

Sometimes I feel like a nut job when I am putting stupid amount of work into the land with what seems like small amount to show. I enjoy it none the less. Its hard work being a steward of the land, but when its a calling there is no choice. I feel ya brother keep up the strong work. I have been doing a hybrid of back to eden and just recently joined the two together.

Awesome project! I've been working on something similar with a big stack of rotten logs. I made a frame like you did and threw in bark, branches, leaves, mulch and compost. I can't wait to plant it up with some fall crop like kale, collards, and what not.
These beds have been extremely productive! I liked them so much I made 9 more🤣 I am sure you will have great success with yours.

My entire garden is made of logs just like this. Some i notched at the ends and some I just rolled into a rectangle. Have yours held up? Mine have only been in place about a year. Love that you posted this! Hope they’re still in good shape. I didn’t dig mine in. Just rolled them into place and filled!
Ours have held up quite well. Still going strong. I am sure you will get quite a few years of production out of yours.

I definitely like this design! I would also point the fact that logs inside provide several important benefits for the plants /especially in a cold climate place/.
First logs provide an environment for soil creatures to live in the structure the wood provides protected from frost and cold. This benefits soil organism activity in the soil even in winter time.
Second very important is the logs are preventing soil compaction as it would happen if we put soil only all the way down 40 cm as I suppose your bed is.
Third very important: as the wood material decomposes it creates heat that benefits the root system of the plants especially in winter time. Generally deep Hugelculture raised beds generate and preserve more heat and solar energy for the plants grown inside.
Also when you put so much wood on the bottom of the raised bed you effectively deny entry of moles and voles that may feed on your plants root system!

Hey brother, great job! However, I'd like to point out in all that digging, your soil is already excellent. No need for the digging and wood chunks, unless you really want to of course. Just saying, you have prime soil as is and I would start planting in that beautiful humus right away. It's peas day, today. God bless you all.
I have to raise the beds in these locations because a lot of water comes down through the area when it rains

I just made a new very large hugel mound.....with a tractor ! LOL

I saw one RUclipsr who had problems with carpenter ants getting into the beds and then farming aphids. It’s the only negative I’ve seen on hugelkultur and had me thinking that logs as walls would be more risky for pests. Seems like you’re not having problems but wondering if you’ve dug one up to check? Awesome video! Cheers!
We haven't had any problems with them yet. And it has been a few years since I built these. These beds have been producing very well. I have since added 9 more beds of similar fashion and made a few more rather large hugelkulture mounds. The system takes a while to get going, but once it does it works well.
I haven't dug any beds up yet, but I have dug down into them to see what is going on. No infestations yet!

Your video showed me that digging a Hügelkultur bed and dragging trees is a huge amount of work. What about those too old to do that? What about just building on the surface with the wood you can find? Wouldn't that work? Thank you. I envy you your strength.
It is a lot of work, but it's worth it! I'm sure you could build a mound right on the surface. No harm in trying
Yes, you can. I am old also, and have watched videos that show four variations of Hugulkultur beds. Barbara Pleasant also builds a comforter compost right on top of the grass. Lots of ways to do it. Happy gardening.

Absolutely. There are pros and cons to all of them. Use what you have access to!
How did you pervent termites ?
Chickens. At the beginning and end of each season I let the chickens in to do their thing. Haven't had an issue yet.

What type of chain saw do you have?
I have a Stihl MS 391 and an old stihl 025
