I am curious of why us adults care if GI Joe is a shrinking IP? Kids don’t care about GI Joe because they don’t have cartoons to get them excited like we were made to want the toys? Kids still like cartoons. Kids will beg their parents for toys they want. If it is GI Joe or not, does it matter? We adults still have other means to collect the IP. What does it matter if Hasbro sticks the IP in the closet? It seems it’s shown itself resilient enough to last as long or longer than our lifespans. If 60 years later it’s gone then it’s gone. I’ll be gone too. Meanwhile 1:12 or 1:18 I’ll still enjoy collecting GI Joe which Hasbro is making still until they aren’t.
I don’t care. But I’m sure that adult collectors that enjoy the line and have enjoyed it for decades would like it to continue. Is the dwindling adult audience enough to keep the IP alive? Maybe.. 🤷🏼♂️ But I bet adults that are Hasbro share holders care. I bet those that are invested in the company care. And I bet that there are those who would like to pass on their hobby/interest in GI Joe (and the moral message and values that they learned from it and were inspired by) to their own kids care. I definitely believe that for guys like Chad, it isn’t just about the toys. I’m sure guys like him have many reasons for wanting the GI Joe brand to continue on for future generations. I don’t think guys like him are nihilists.
You didn't mention Fresh Monkey Fiction. They might do a good job with military style action figures. However, we still need to se how well the Operation: Monster Force action figures turn out.
That's the miss with Kreo!! You can have a 3 story Cobra Temple of Darkness/Terror Drome (with the Death Star Trash Compactor) when you have 2 inch Minifigs. You 6 inch junkies want vehicles? Have a Micro-Line.
The problem I'm having with the Skybound Joe stuff so far is it's feeling too much like Joe cartoon mythology (except with real violence) instead of the Hama comics. And that includes Hama's new book oddly enough. They aren't bad at all--I am enjoying them. But they're not really giving me what i want, which is not Cobra-La or mutated Cobras. Johnson is killing it on Transformers though.
When Hasbro goes the way of Kenner. Tell Bobby he needs to buy the GI Joe’s IP. Hasbro has the worst leadership running their company, Emily can only run but so much, lol. IDW early GI Joe and GI Joe Origins and Cobra were all great comics. And the original Transformers run from IDW was great, start with All Hail Megatron
I agree with Chad. Lego is a toy, but they're not action figures. Kids still play with toys the problem is kids aren't playing with as many action figures, and that's because of the major toy companies focusing too much on adults. And like you guys said a lot of these Brands don't have media tie-ins that Target kids. Oh but Transformer and GI Joe have comic books, there's a new GI Joe video game coming out. But those Target older adult fans. Mattel could bring back Street Sharks make a cartoon for say Amazon Prime or Netflix to Target kids. Hasbro could turn Visionaries into a fantasy Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. Mask could get turned into a fun racing style video game with maybe some vehicle combat element added to it. Just don't show huge amounts of Gore in it so it gets maybe a tea for teen rating to see if it's worth developing further and revitalizing that brand.
It's a good thing they don't have media to attract a newer and younger generation of fans and collectors. Can you imagine the agendas they would be pushing through any new media?
Having dedicated media for GI Joe does not prevent people from mixing their GI Joe action figures with Marvel Legends or Star Wars, or any other action figure lines that someone might collect. So what if a cartoon, comic book, or movie makes people interested in the toys and action figures. The movies and cartoons from the 70s and 80s were popular because they were WAY more than simple advertisements for the toys. Those were actually entertaining and fairly well thought out stories.
Why on Earth would Valaverse want to get involved with GI Joe and Hasbro? Even if Hasbro gave him a lot of money there would still be lots of strings attached. It just wouldn't be worth the headache.
At this point no other company could take over Marvel and Star Wars from Hasbro. A different company would have a different scale and style. Existing fans won't like any changes. There will never be enough new fans to make up for the loss of the existing fans.
The sad part is Marvel comics are great currently too. Obviously, you have to be choosy in what you read from Marvel, but over the last year or two, there have been some absolutely phenomenal story arcs. I think Hasbro should separate Marvel Legends and MCU into two lines. Legends should also be a good mix of classic and modern designs of characters. I'm 28 and still actively read and pick up comics, I love classic stuff, but I'm personally sick of seeing primarily classic and/or retro character designs.
Lastly, I completely agree with Chad. I've openly admitted that my introduction to GI Joe was Sigma 6 figures and the short-lived cartoon. I've since educated myself, but they need to build a new storyline for Joes to garner new interest.
Catching the replay now. Good chat fellas especially the Transformers talk. There has been a massive slip in quality and heft in Transformers particularly the yellowing of white Transformers along with stress marks forming very easily on them and the transparent plastic being used which cracks. Hasbro are a weird company that have weird people in key positions. Look at how they absolutely tanked Power Rangers in record time when that's an easy brand to work with. Star Wars and Marvel doing so badly hurts Hasbro because they were once big successes but are no longer going to be with what has happened in the entertainment. As far as G.I. Joe is concerned I have my own idea on why they don't wish to promote it but the Renegades and Resolute shows were excellent and Skybound have totally reinvigorated Joes there. I was all in on the new designs for classified Joes but the hard turn into nostalgia just made them goofy and boring looking imo. Skybound are doing great work with Transformers and Joe's.
Starting Line Up's initial asking price of $50 was WAY TOO MUCH! What possible target market or audience did Hasbro think it had for these action figures, especially at those sky high prices?
For the past 6 months the Only New Transformers I've physically seen have all been these uglier than the 90s G2 Neon Color Scheme. There's a stack of Cheetos Grimlick. Why would kids want this crap? Their basic all cardboard packaged figures feel like knock-offs of their former lines. Hasblow kills itself.
For years every time I looked at the toy aisle the shelves and pegs for Marvel Legends, Star Wars, and other Hasbro lines would be empty. Every single store in my area all the time. This stuff was selling very well or the stores thought having empty shelves and pegs was a good use of store space.
Apparently the people in control of TMNT didn't get the same memo that the people at Disney and Hasbro got. Soon enough they will be corrected and TMNT will start sucking.
The only reason Hasbro isn't putting GI Joe back in the closet now is because they don't want Valaverse Action Force to dominate the military themed action figure market. Hasbro was ready to let GI Joe die. Hasbro hiked prices, limited distribution, hid action figures in WINDOWLESS boxes, and filled those closed boxes with bendy weapons and poorly painted blobs of broken plastic. The only thing Hasbro's GI Joe has is history and name recognition. If Hasbro had let GI Joe die like they wanted then everyone would have flocked to Valaverse Action Force. Hasbro is getting their wish.
Be careful about depending on ordering things online. At this rate, soon, there will be no products located anywhere near you. What could go wrong with not having any products physically near where you live?
Did Hasbro really lose over $1 Billion in the fourth quarter of 2023? It was clear in the first half of 2022 with Hasbro's push for WINDOWLESS boxes "for environmental reasons" that Hasbro was going to have BIG problems. However, the earliest article I found about the "plastic free" packaging was way back in May of 2020. (Edit: corrected spelling errors.)
Hasbro COMPLETELY destroyed their Power Rangers and D&D action figure lines. Had Hasbro put more effort into those lines they could have made much more money which would have offset any losses from other parts of the company.
How is it possible that there is so much trouble properly distributing action figures? Doesn't technology and computers and sophisticated programs help increase the efficiency of distribution? Beware! The problems with toys will soon be problems with other, more important, things. Habing problems like this in this day and age must be intentional.
@hammertronactionfigures2426 (RE-WORD! 'cause the 'tubes made the original not seen.) @hammertronactionfigures2426 12 hours ago Of course that GI Joe brand manager, that he/she/him/her/it lady, would be proud of the fact that there is no dedicated media for GI Joe.
Those 1/18 WalMart Cobra Officers and Troopers are AMAZING! I have two full squads (thats 2 officers and 16 troopers). Looove them.
Also, I think after we get Fresh Monkey Fiction's Monster Force in hand, they could probably handle the Joes IP as well.
ALL RIGHT! TALKING TRASH ABOUT HASBRO!
I'M UP FOR THAT! I'M DOWN WITH THAT!
I'M HERE FOR IT, BABYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
Watched first half Live second on replay
Hiys stuff is on BBTS and entertainment earth
Hiya has GI Joe product on BBTS and EE?
@3POAPodcast well looking again i guess they dont have gijoe. But they do have Godzilla, robocop, rambo and some of their other lines!
Okay, Chad was specifically talking about GI Joe. I’m not sure if that was clear on the show.
@3POAPodcast yeah makes sense, its crazy they can sell all the other brands but not joes. BS! Their 4 inch scal figs look awesome.
They do look awesome!
For years every time I looked at the toy aisle the shelves and pegs for Marvel Legends, Star Wars, and other Hasbro lines would be empty.
Every single store in my area all the time.
This stuff was selling very well or the stores thought having empty shelves and pegs was a good use of store space.
MASK toys would work well at 1/18 scale due to the size of some of the vehicles.
However, 1/12 would also work for many of the smaller vehicles.
It's good to hear that Hasbro is slashing their figure subscription service plan.
I flat out refuse to get invovled with a figure subscription plan.
We should go back to the days of at least 26 episodes per season.
Or 65 episodes per season with multiple seasons.
Bobby Vala was on the Clownfish TV channel sometime during the first two weeks of September in 2023.

Of course that GI Joe brand manager, that he/she/him/her/it lady, would be proud of the fact that there is no dedicated media for GI Joe.
That GI Joe brand manager is one of those "idea" people with a plan.
