As always Maarten, a very well put together review with a nice flow to the extensive amount of detailed information shared in one production. I applaud you for the clarity and all-inclusive reviews that share good points and limitations.
As always an informative and detailed video. The 70-300mm would be the perfect travel lens together with the 18-80mm. I already got the 100-400mm, but it's quite heavy for traveling. It's a little bit baffling how lightweight the 70-300mm is compared with the 100-400mm.
I don't see this mentioned in any other comments but I don't think the teleconverters work with all x-mount lenses as stated around 12:35. To my knowledge, only the 70-300, 50-140, and 100-400 are able to use the 1.4x and 2.0x converters. The converter has a magnification barrel that sticks out the lens side so the lens needs to adapt to fit over that barrel. I use the 1.4 on my 100-400 with great results for far off stationary birds. Tripod mandatory!
@12:34 you said that the tele converter works with all Xmonut lessens, that is not the case, it works only with Fuji lenses that have the glass inside the lens moved inward, so the tele converter front glass can go inside.
Finally a big channel talking about the zoom problem of the Fuji lenses, that kind of blur effect, also the exposure problem on some fixed aperture model like the 16-80. We know most are not parfocal, but competitors offer cheap solutions without this problem in video, and I doubt some lenses are really parfocal like a basic 14-42 Lumix. I made a video about it time ago. 👍🏻 Ths solution is not to suggest or use the cinema lines btw, considering there is no autofocus and there aree many alternative in the mirrorless market with Autofocus and great for AF, it's mostly a Fuji lens design "problem". Lumix docet. Also this problem during a zoom action can create troubles for stills, when you're tracking a moving subject and you need to zoom you may encounter some scene blackout or stutter during the zoom. Really visible on the 50-140 2.8, too much blue during normal use when zooming, even without recording any video. I made the video to reach Fujifilm and find an answer about these behavior, I do not have the answer yet, it's a real downside for an hybrid system as Fujifilm says.
@@MaartenHeilbron 😊 nice lens the new 70-300. But I prefer to have the 100-400 and tc 1.4x for more reach, the best combo on earth for the price and focal, but still out of my budget at the moment. 🤣
@@MaartenHeilbron bit late to this conversation, but would like to know why you won't recommend for video? I've recently picked this one up, and have (to my dismay) found it very soft when using a VND filter (yes, it is a 'fotga', so not best quality, but still didn't expect this horrible softness). Any advice of VND's that is suitable for video shooting with 70-300?
This lens does not maintain focus as you change the focal length. In my mind that makes it unsuitable for video. I would recommend a 3 or 5 stop ND filter from a reputable brand like Tiffen, B=W or Hoya.
You would sure be an experienced and inspiring photographer. I am an amateur still trying to learn. Still with the kit lens 18-55. And wanted to have the 70-300 someday just for more reach and birds
I bought an XF 70-300mm lens today for my X-E3 camera and plan to take them to the total solar eclipse in 2024. I was rather concerned that looking at the IS MODE menu there was no option to turn off the image stabilisation and this is the preferred way of using the camera when on a tripod. The people in the shop were puzzled with this and I was prepared to upgrade to the X-S10 if the X-E3 wouldn't work properly with the new lens. However, on putting the 70-300mm lens on the X-E3 in the shop and switching on the camera, the IS MODE menu showed the OFF menu item. So, it looks like the camera / lens combination will be suitable for taking photographs on a tripod. Unfortunately, the 70-300mm doesn't have a lens collar or a standard Fujifilm accessory to mount the lens directly onto a tripod. However, iShoot makes one that is compatible with both the 70-300 and the 50-200 lenses. It looks good, but I am concerned that it could scratch the lovely brand new lens, especially as the lens is mostly made out of plastic. In your opinion, do these types of lens collars mark the lens?
Yes, the only way to turn off stabilization is in the camera menu. I haven't tried this device, so can't offer any advice. A few external scratches may be worth the results.

I'm glad someone thorough and unbiased like you has finally reviewed the 70-300. In your opinion, is the trade off between image quality and reach when using the 2x teleconverter worth it? I'll probably rent both teleconverters before buying one, but I'm interested in an outside opinion. Thank you for this video!
@@MaartenHeilbron Sorry, I didn't mean that to sound like "what took you so long". You stated that the 2x teleconverter works with all X mount lenses. That’s not correct. Only the 100-400mm, 70-300mm, 50-140mm and 80mm are compatible with either of Fuji’s two teleconverters.

I think you covered everything. This is all you need 10-24, 16-80, and 70-300. Was really nice to see how small the 70-300, and the extender makes it a little better lens than the one Nikon makes. But it’s slower than my Nikon 70-300. I would still need prime lenses, but would get the 23mm for my primary lens. The image quality with the X-E4 look pretty good. Fujifilm MKX lenses on an X-E4?
I have a question about the lens hood for the 70-300. Are the tabs that clicks when you twist it on to the lens on very thin plastic “bits or arms” (I don’t know what to call them, English is not my native language), or are they thicker? I’m asking because the tabs on the lens hood for the 90mm lens are on very thin plastic. They have broken for me, even though I’m always careful with my gear. It’s actually happened twice. I got a replacement hood and it also lost the tabs. I’m just worried that this new lens might have the same design. The old 55-200mm had a much more sturdy design, so I hope it’s more like that. (Hope that was understandable)

Maarten your videos are always so helpful. I was wondering if you would give me your opinion on this: For bird and wildlife would you get the 1.4x TC or the 2.x to go on the 70-300mm. My dilemma is in thinking that 210mm (35mm equiv.) minimum FL might be too much?... Or not...I'm a new hobby photographer with a penchant for birds and wildlife. Thank you.
Yeah I own both teleconverter to use with the 50-140. I hesitated to purchase the 2x tc but ended getting it anyways to pair up with the 70-300 rather getting the beastly 100-400. I find the 2x is definitely sharp enough imo. My dilema now is to keep both tc or get rid of the 1.4x since they are limited to few certain lenses. I know id be losing 2x stops of light vs 1 but I'd be earning my money back to put towards the 70-300 when it arrives in stock. I find my sweet spot for birding is in the 500-600mm range and I can always crop too if I need to fill the frame by using xt3's sports mode 1.25x or manually in post.

Teleconverters do not work with all X-mount lenses, only a few zooms.
Yes, thanks. I've corrected the description.
I've heard conflicting info if the xf 27mm mkII is quieter focusing then the previous version, does it seem like it to you?
Wasn't able to compare side-by-side, but it seems quiet enough to me.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks!
Thank you.
Go with the 2x, it's not too much.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you Maarten!
@@streetzine Thanks for sharing these notes.
Great,thank you
Welcome! Always nice when viewers appreciate my work.
Thank you Maarten. This was really interesting for me! Still the question for me is: if I have the 55-200, does it make sense to upgrade?
Probably not.
If you want / need weather sealing + closeup shooting, yes. If you want none of those. No.
@@erikfarkas7868 I think you are missing some nuance in your comment.
The teleconverter works with all X mount lenses?
As far as I know both teleconverter work only on compatibel lensens, not all lenses.
No, it does not work with all x-mount lenses. For instance, it does not work with 55-200.. However, it will work with 70-300.
I believe it works with the 80mm macro, 50-140, 100-400 and now the 70-300.
Because it extends into the back of the lens, it's only compatible with some, like the 70-300 and the 50-140.
Thanks for adding this detail.
Great little lens but image qualitywise nothing extraordinary. Won't sell my 50-140 to get this... great review by the way, thanks!
Always nice to know I've provided useful information, thanks for commenting.
The tele works with all X mount lenses? Really? Not true.
Correct. Not true.
I want the 70-300.......
Understood. Now, how to turn your wants into action!
I think they need to incorporate economic video lens so we can benefit from the hight video quality without spending a fortune of money.
The reality is that if your projects are no generating revenue, you'll always find it difficult to fund your interests.
With that background all I heard was blah blah blah blah blah. So picturesque!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed our snowy day (although it is admittedly a composite created with green screen).
@@MaartenHeilbron You fooled me. Wow I thought that was a window. Thanks Maarten. Always appreciate your videos.
@@jasonlee6848 Thanks. The tip-off should be that the snowflakes are too big - because they're close to the camera.
All well and good but come on Fuji ...give us a GREAT 18-135 ....please!
Are you wanting one at D2.8, F4 or F4-5.6?
@@MaartenHeilbron F4
They already have a good 18-135mm
@@graham_T Well, if you are willing to settle for F3.5-5.6 - bhpho.to/3uus7uG (affiliate link)
Why do you seem like a stage magician? I half-expect you to saw the lens in half then, with a puff of smoke, produce a white dove in its place
An excellent suggestion for my next video, thanks!!
