  • In this video, I show how I made a keepsake box for my parents out of scrap oak that came from my grandfather's workshop, after he passed away. There's a lot of sentimental value in this box for my dad and it was really cool to be able to pull this together.
    I used also spline miters and had to make a spline miter jig for my table saw in the process.
    Tools/Materials I used:
    Vintage Craftsman Table Saw
    Craftsman Router
    Titebond II Wood Glue
    Watco Medium Walnut Danish Oil
    Scrap Oak Chunks

    Getting the splines bottomed out is always a bit of a pain. The box turned out amazingly! Great job Brent 👍🍻

      Thanks Grant! I definitely found that out about the splines! I was certain they were bottomed out, but the evidence showed otherwise. I’m really happy with the results anyway. Thanks for checking it out!

    What about making a small box out of the wider boards from a wooden pallet? Also, what thickness of wood did you use in the walls of the box? I can tell that that they are a good bit thinner than 3/4 inch thick.

    • @WhiteLabWorkshop
      @WhiteLabWorkshop  3 года назад

      Pallet wood, when properly prepared, would certainly work for a keepsake box. And you would have a story to tell about the work you did to prepare it. The sentimental value of this box for my dad is that it was made from wood from my late grandfather’s shop. Wood that we didn’t think was usable. The sides ended up somewhere around 3/8 inch thick.

      Thank you, Chris! You are absolutely correct. To anyone else, this is just a box. But to my parents, particularly my dad, this box means much more.

      @@WhiteLabWorkshop I have a view point on life based upon Yogic philosophy that I hold strong, but I also have a few objects of my Dad's that I hold sacred due to him being my best friend and teacher and they also provide a way to discuss him with my young son when he becomes curious about his Grandfather's history😊 I know that the box you made will be truly treasured for its connection with your Grandfather 😊 Love, Peace and Blessings to you all there 😊 ॐ

      Haha! Thanks man! This was actually the first time I tried splines. It was quite a gamble for me, considering how much work I had put into the box by then. I’m really glad it paid off!

    Hello my friend.
    You have created a wonderful souvenir box with the oak tree from the grandfather's workshop who passed away. I watched a really nice project. You did a good job. You would have created a box that would remain a good memory for your family. Congratulations. Thank you for sharing. Warm hug. Great greetings. Yours truly....

    That's amazing that you were able to incorporate these piece of wood from your grandfather. It instantly gives this piece history and tremendous sentimental value. This will make for an amazing heirloom for your family.

      Thank you so much! Without the knowledge of the history of the wood, this would just be an ordinary box, and probably not a particularly great one. But my parents really did appreciate it when they opened the gift!

    I've been making and selling boxes for 6 months and I watch videos like yours always looking for better methods and up until you mentioned the tape getting in the way of the splines I was gonna try taping before cutting and placing the spline but won't now. Good video and the box looks nice!

    Hey Brent, nice box! I dont know which kind of blade you have on your table saw but if you use a flat topped blade the splines come out way better. I also recently saw somebody using a biscuit jointing machine to cut splines into a frame with the help of a jig!

    • @WhiteLabWorkshop
      @WhiteLabWorkshop  4 года назад

      Thank you, Dmitri! I was using one of the outside blades from a dado stack for the spline cuts, which has a flat grind. This was the first time I had done splines before, so there was plenty of user error in there as well. I just finished making a box with the same technique (future video coming) and it came out much better. Always improving, I guess! Thanks for watching!

    That is such a cool project for both it's sentiment and the quality of box that you ended up with. Such a neat gift idea. My parents are at the age that there really isn't anything that I can buy them that has near as much meaning as what I make. I'm sure yours just loved this gift.

      Thank you very much, Stan! For the right recipient, a hand crafted gift is definitely more appreciated than a store bought gift. Every now and then the opportunity comes to add even more depth to it, like I was able to with this one. My parents loved this gift.

    I can never get the blue tape trick to work. What's the secret?

    • @WhiteLabWorkshop
      @WhiteLabWorkshop  3 года назад

      If I can pull it off, anyone can. I’m not sure what doesn’t work about it for you, but it’s been pretty straightforward every time I’ve done it. Just take the time to make sure everything is lined up before sticking the tape on and it should take care of the rest for you.

    • @adammoran163
      @adammoran163 3 года назад

      Honestly, I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Maybe operator error, maybe dust on the wood.. there's no telling.
