Banning TikTok Won't Keep Us Safe: Julia Angwin Critiques Bipartisan Attack on Chinese Firm

  • A bipartisan group of senators has introduced the RESTRICT Act, which would allow the federal government to potentially ban technology from countries the U.S. considers to be adversaries, including China. Last Thursday, congressmembers grilled TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew during a five-hour hearing on the app's ties to the Chinese government, its data practices and its effects on children's mental health. Critics say this China-focused scrutiny largely ignores similar privacy concerns over the use of U.S.-owned apps and social media platforms. We hear more from Julia Angwin, an investigative journalist and contributing opinion writer at _The New York Times_, whose latest guest essay is titled "How to Fix the TikTok Problem."

It would be so easy for China to sell TikTok to a U.S. company it still has control over but they don’t want it because they aren’t subject to Chinese laws anymore that allow it complete control over the company. These are in far greater ways than US govt can control social media here

The US has chronic domestic problems, including a national debt of over $31 trillion, economic inequality, inflation, healthcare, education, $1.7 trillion in student loans (average loan balance of $38,000), racial inequality, mass incarceration, infrastructure, housing affordability, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence. All these problems are consequences of government policies. The country's political leaders are deeply divided and hostile to each other, but both parties have identified China as their "most consequential threat" and the source of their problems.
The US population is whipped up to see Chinese threats everywhere. A weather balloon is seen as a threat, as is a port crane and even TikTok. Sanction chopsticks, noodles, and sewing machines, they have dual uses. Chopsticks could poke someone's eyes and blind them, noodles could be fed to PLA soldiers, and sewing machines could be used to make military-grade uniforms.

Yes, sad that VPN is pulled into this. But TikTok has tons of ethical problem, sneaky issues. A lot of Americans don't understand the hidden structure in TikTok, which is an App that doesn't have any algorithm on it. Its algorithm belongs to a Chinese company that must follow the China Government's Law. So, the data collected by TikTok has to sent to a this company to run the algorithm on it. Since the company has no power to resist the China Government's demand (bounded by Law), all the user data can be used to do lots of harm, like the Russian bots of fake news we witness on Facebooks, Twitter. The only different is Facebook and Twitter can be sued or prosecute under the US Law due to the data belongs to them, not a foreign government.

What is the government's role - isn't their responsibility to ensure security and law enforcement to support businesses, and if a business is abiding the laws and all these problems persist, who would take the blame. So totally agree with that banning Tik Tok would not solve any of these problems, but could only make them worse when a lot of entrepreneurs are relying on it and many ethical and creative content creators are on it. Come on this is digital AI age, mind your own minds and eyes, adults at least 🤪
