honestly don't hate on patrick for doing a solo career while fall out boy was on hiatus. this was something that he never got the chance to do with fall out boy. and it's an entirely different record, so it was difficult to put out without getting hate, and i am so so proud of him for doing it. he has so much talent, he literally played and produced everything himself, this whole album was 100% patrick stump. i will always love and be proud of patrick for making this and the transition and standing up to hate for changing and if you talk bad about soul punk, patrick may put the "i" in lie but i put the "i" in i will punch you bye
You are so right on many levels. Doing a speech about Patrick for a speech contest at my school (not a joke) and I will be mentioning Soul Punk, it changed me.
I completely agree. If he hadn't done this during the hiatus, he may have never been able to do it. He has so much talent and he should be allowed to do what he wants with it.
You know, I am too. But I will say I am so thrilled about the Fall Out Boy reunion. I used to make jokes saying, "Patrick Stump, put your damn hat back on so FOB can reunite. I literally cracked up when they came back and he was wearing the fedora. LOVE it!!
Erin Shea True :) and I'm glad that he got a new hat, means that FOB has come back and there would be a huge change. In a better way so far, I think ;)
I will never understand why so many people dislike his solo stuff. Its pop, yeah, but its GOOD pop. And honestly, this video makes me so proud of him, he's grown so much from that little awkward 16 year old that got talked into singing instead of drumming.
He originally wants to write his own song, and started singing to show them his songs, but pete end up offer him "do u want to sing?".... and in an interview he admits that he didn't even care about lyrics, and pete was like "let me do this part"
I CRI BC PATRICK WORKED SO HARD ON THIS AND HARDLY ANYONE LIKED IT! I LOVE IT WORDS CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH HIS SONGS MAKE ME SMILE AND FEEL HAPPY ABOUT MYSELF
IS NOBODY GONNA TALK ABOUT HOW THE LUPE FIASCO VERSION IS SO SUBTLY POLITICAL LIKE DAMN THAT WAS CLEVER lemme break it down for y'all: Patrick is singing about how he loves his city despite all its flaws. Lupe comes in and raps about neighborhood segregation and gentrification. Patrick's main focus is about how much he loves his city and not much of its problems because he, as a white person, doesn't have to deal with them. This emphasizes white privilege. He mentions the problems, but he says "Forget all the drugs and gangs, corruption..." showing how these problems don't affect him. Lupe raps about all the problems that Patrick doesn't dwell on, and then in the end, almost as an afterthought, he adds "Beside all the above, I love..." and then patrick goes "This city!!!" It really shows how white privilege makes people blind to the problems that minorities are facing. Also, many people say the rap part doesn't really work with the rest of the song/feels out of place, but I think that was deliberate. Hip hop is considered an "urban" genre - black communities first started using the genre as a way to express their emotions through music. The stark contrast between Lupe's rap segment and Patrick's pop-ish sounding parts further highlights the racial disparity without explicitly mentioning it. Also, Lupe Fiasco doesn't get much time in the song, which I think also highlights that African American communities don't get heard enough... (also Lupe Fiasco is a Muslim so this can go multiple ways as well!!) honestly there is sooooo much more i can say about this song and i can go on and on and on about the depth behind the choice of lyrics and the types of genre used and just. HHHHHHHHHHHH i love it i love it i LOVE IT
Momina Nadeem You do know that this wasn’t originally written with Lupe, right? So how can it’s message lean that much on contrast if it was only written to have one singer?

I love the way Patrick sings like how he fidgets a bit, like he wants to let out all of his love or anger or music and talent. I honestly love Patrick's solo works I hate when people say it went no where, because it obviously did. People bought the albums, people watch his videos, and if you don't think that's enough well then piss off.
Reading through some of these comments, here and ITunes, I'm kinda shocked. Everyone was like "Funk wannabe", "Terrible and too mainstream", "Terrible voice and vocals". I will say that this is your opinion ,and now I can give my opinion. I personally LOVED this song. He let loose his lyrics and writing style not for people to like it, but for himself. Sometimes you just have to be you, and sometimes you get hate for it. I found this inspirational. Breaking away from your popular group to do your own thing, not caring what others thought. (But I am also a huge fan of Fall Out Boy)
Soul punk is an underrated masterpiece! I can’t believe he played all the instruments on this album it deserved so much more exposure, but Patrick is a humble man who didn’t care about getting this album to number one, although it truly deserved to be!
I couldn’t agree with you more, soul punk is a masterpiece. I would love to see another solo album from him. He is just far too talented not to do it again, and I feel like his second album will be even better because he just gets better and better.
+ Bridget Vantas I once had a dream where it was my birthday. I was at the library then Brendon and Patrick were there somehow and sang happy birthday to me. Also sidenote It was the best happy birthday I ever heard.
I see nobody has commented on it yet, so I'll just be the one to say it ... Lupe Fiasco! I love him! I have a whole new respect for both of these artists for working together.
It makes me so sad how underrated and under appreciated Patrick's Soul Punk album is!! Patrick is so freaking talented and is a little angel and this song and album is so incredible, it sure as hell deserved more attention than it got. Like, Patrick did pretty much all of it himself and hardly anyone seemed to care and it makes me so depressed on how Patrick didn't get enough praise for it. As much as I am a HUGE fan of FoB, I still think Soul Punk should have gotten more attention. I LOVE YOU PATRICK!!
This song is actually great. Like I'm sorry guys, but just because up its nothing like FOB's stuff, doesn't mean it's bad. There's a reason this is called a 'solo project'. If this is Patrick's style aside from Fall about Boy then that's fucking awesome. Opinions are great but let's stop the hate :D

Patrick's solo work is honestly really amazing, I love it. I'm glad he's back with Fall Out Boy again, but really, both the band and this album are awesome.

Lol Patrick is singing how much he loves the city, then the black guy just starts giving a detailed breakdown of the problem with the city.... Then goes back to say I love it XD
+ThaHappySauce i think the what the song meant was that patrick since he is white he gets more benefits than the blacks. So the blacks who has no same treatment, points out the problems with the city. Yet patrick who doesn't give a shet in the video is saying he still loves it no matter what.
My research project gets affected by workshops in random universities in my city. I used to be like this and like this song. Now I just like this song! I live in Chennai, India!
I saw Patrick in Concert ten years ago. His drumming skills were really impressive. I decided to check out his cd a few years back and loved it! I hope he’s doing well with music. Ray Carter
i really like the soul punk era, and just soul punk in general. don't get me wrong, fall out boy is amazing (i saw them in concert and almost cried), but soul punk is just this super cool dance-y album and it's awesome. to be honest, i'm glad that patrick made this album because he wanted to. it's just this super cool thing where he wanted to make music outside of a band, so he did. it's really inspiring to me actually, because he did literally everything on this record and it's a really sweet record. so here i am, congratulating patrick stump on soul punk.
He definitely has something to be proud of. It's a fantastic album that showcases his vocal abilities outside of Fall Out Boy. He's an awesome musician either way you cut it. He should make another album because this stuff is gold.
Do you ever think about the fact that this video came out and Pete, Joe, and Andy watched it alone by themselves?? Makes me sad but also happy that Patrick got this moment to shine.
How good it feels to not listen to a song for 2 years and then go back to it and start dancing around and singing along to the lyrics like back in those days! Yess Patrick -miny MJ at this point of his life!
I love love love his voice. I am distracted by the suspenders and the jacket he forgot to take the hanger out of but he alone wrote. produced, sang and played 10 different instruments for this album (do you still say album). I am beyond impressed. He is wicked handsome in a suit.

omg you're actually doing a speech on him ?? good luck man that's the best speech topic you could ever get
I completely agree. If he hadn't done this during the hiatus, he may have never been able to do it. He has so much talent and he should be allowed to do what he wants with it.

IS NOBODY GONNA TALK ABOUT HOW THE LUPE FIASCO VERSION IS SO SUBTLY POLITICAL LIKE DAMN THAT WAS CLEVER lemme break it down for y'all:
Patrick is singing about how he loves his city despite all its flaws.

(also Lupe Fiasco is a Muslim so this can go multiple ways as well!!)

@@name-qs6cl I know, the original seems to be just about having pride for the place you come from. But the version with Lupe has this whole added layer of meaning

+ThaHappySauce i think the what the song meant was that patrick since he is white he gets more benefits than the blacks. So the blacks who has no same treatment, points out the problems with the city. Yet patrick who doesn't give a shet in the video is saying he still loves it no matter what.
**is black, so tries not to get offended by that comment, which sounds a bit racist** ...
RACHEL DEBOE it's not really a racist comment, its more of a racist song
Lupe's just not blind to that his city has some flaws, but home's home so yeah
My research project gets affected by workshops in random universities in my city. I used to be like this and like this song. Now I just like this song! I live in Chennai, India!
this man is so perfect wtf
this should be the new national day song
aaand now that the national song has come out, I have to say it sounds so bloody similar 😂
Person: is this Fall Out Boy?
Me: no, this is Patrick.
Numbers can't describe how often I get urges to listen to this song ugh I love listening to Patrick being himself
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how fucking sexy Patrick looks in a tux and gloves
+Nichelle Oakley Yes, we can he is so sexy
But he dancing like he's in hotline bling
Dance Dance, we`re falling apart to half time.
so glad i watched the video cause i totally thought that was patrick rapping
Kate Burke wow 😂
I saw Patrick in Concert ten years ago. His drumming skills were really impressive. I decided to check out his cd a few years back and loved it! I hope he’s doing well with music. Ray Carter
"watch this, i gotta soul voice"
If I ever get a chance to meet Patrick Stump I might cry... I mean I cried when I saw him on the stage... And his voice makes me want to melt
i really like the soul punk era, and just soul punk in general. don't get me wrong, fall out boy is amazing (i saw them in concert and almost cried), but soul punk is just this super cool dance-y album and it's awesome. to be honest, i'm glad that patrick made this album because he wanted to. it's just this super cool thing where he wanted to make music outside of a band, so he did. it's really inspiring to me actually, because he did literally everything on this record and it's a really sweet record. so here i am, congratulating patrick stump on soul punk.
blazeisnotonfire true 😎👊
Whoo! From Ottawa, ON, Canada! RIP Cpl. Nathan Cirillo
This song brings tears in my eyes I'm so happy
He definitely has something to be proud of. It's a fantastic album that showcases his vocal abilities outside of Fall Out Boy. He's an awesome musician either way you cut it. He should make another album because this stuff is gold.
Without a doubt one of Lupe's most underrated verses. Only he could use Gentrification in a hip hop song and make it sound awesome!
Finally a comment about Lupe!
I sort of miss blonde Patrick...
Same
+Becca Spilsbury I agree but I still love his hair now :)
Yes same
I LOVE soul Punk Patrick. The album is amazing. Gotta love you trick.
Do you ever think about the fact that this video came out and Pete, Joe, and Andy watched it alone by themselves?? Makes me sad but also happy that Patrick got this moment to shine.
More Patrick stump, less Donald trump
YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS
If Patrick was also running this could be his campaign slogan XD

#Stump4Pres2016
Those high notes were bomb 😂❤
I have a feeling if his city burned down he would do everything in his power to re build it
How good it feels to not listen to a song for 2 years and then go back to it and start dancing around and singing along to the lyrics like back in those days! Yess Patrick -miny MJ at this point of his life!
Seriously a gifted voice, 2018 anyone?
Patrick stump lover right here ✋ Patrick Stump forever 😍💓😎👊
Patrick is so adorable he should dress like this again he looks amazing in this outfit.❤❤❤
I love love love his voice. I am distracted by the suspenders and the jacket he forgot to take the hanger out of but he alone wrote. produced, sang and played 10 different instruments for this album (do you still say album). I am beyond impressed. He is wicked handsome in a suit.
Dawna Kern he sure does*purrs*😏😎😍💓💕💞
Chicago is my city to!!!! love Chicago
Tiffany Carlin hell yeahhh
Soul punk deserved a lot more credit than it got. I love his solo stuff and especially the Fall Out Boy stuff
