Chicanos move to Mexico City.. but do we like it?

- In 2021, we sold most of our belongings and decided to become digital nomads. We grew tired of Chicago winters, crime, American mass shootings, and set our sights on moving to Mexico. All this time we’ve been saying “we moved to Mexico” when really we’ve been traveling throughout Mexico, so does that really count as “moving”? Part of our goals in traveling the country was to learn more about the beautiful cultures in our heritage country but also to explore potential cities or towns to call our next home. We made numerous videos analyzing different places we liked, talking pros and cons, and now, we find ourselves moving to a city we’d never even considered an option: Mexico City

From a former Chicagoan to another, bienvenidos a CDMX!! I’ve been living here for the past 31 years
Thank you! 🤗 are you a Bears fan by any chance? We’re looking for peeps to watch games with 😁
@@EatBailaTravel I must confess that since I met my husband I’ve leaned more towards the Steelers (don’t hate me) but one of my brothers (also king here ) and I still route for them. Da Bears 🐻
Bear down
Your money is worth more there plus you have RUclips videos
I was born and raised in Chicago. Mexico City was not on my radar until I visited my friend here. I love it and plan to stay for a few more months. So far so good
Nice! Hey there fellow Chicagoan 🤗
I was born and raised in Mexico City (Polanco). I live in Northern California now, but CDMX Is just an amazing world. So much culture, incredible higher education, tons of museums and one of the best gastronomies in the world. The areas of Roma, Condesa and Polanco are vibrant, diverse and beautiful. Good luck. Blessings!
Born in NYC from Mexican parents never ever forgotten about the motherland you guys are in your country as well we both from the US and Mexico don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, I’m also thinking in moving to Mexico City we should form a community
Thank you! and likewise to you! There's already a decent community of returned migrants who grew up in the US (deportees/adult children of deportees who came back with their parents) and they're great people to connect with so far. Let us know if you do come! We can definitely build up a healthy Mexican-American community in CDMX ❤️🇲🇽
My wife and I lived in Chicago for many years. All I miss is my relatives and the food. ( Gorditas Aguascalientes, Los Gallos, Atotonilco's etc. ) You guys will do just fine. Mexico's economy is doing better every day. You'll be ok.
So glad I subscribed as a 23 yr/o Chicano from chicago I always gave this thought I'm here from your video on Puebla from where my parents are from ,cool Chanel guys!
🇲🇽 How exciting! It will be nice to see you guys exploring the big city and thanks for taking us along on the ride!! Saludos from SoCal!!
sending our love to SoCal! 🤗
I'm from Chicago too and I visited Mexico City last year and fell in love with the city. Not once did I feel unsafe. I think the city has so much to offer. I can't wait to go back. Good luck guys!
thanks so much!
Cause you probably only saw the bubble of Roma, condesa, polanco, centro historico. I can take you where the real 20 million people live where it takes 3 hours of public transport to get to work and people make less than 6k pesos a month and dont have running water or clean water (you dont have those problems in chicago). Where it is vandelized, potholes, trash, nothing compared to chicago
We look forward to being able to watch you thrive in one of the most amazing cities on this planet. We have been living in Nayarit full time for four years and so far have only spent five nights in CDMX but are spending almost two weeks there over Christmas and New Years this year and are really excited about it. For those of you who are not lovers of big cities in general you must visit CDMX at some point to experience it.
thank you! We're excited to experience it all 🤗
You two look good together. I wish you many years of happiness.
Thank you 🥰❤️🙏🏽 6 years married so far and counting
Congrats on this new chapter! I'm looking forward to your videos about Mexico City. I am planning to visit in October and I trust both of you can recommend the best places to visit!! Buena suerte! From one chicano to another! 🇲🇽
thank you! 😃 it might take us some time to figure out where the good spots are but we will do our best🫡 saludos paisano! 🇲🇽🇺🇸
Congrats on your new chapter! Love Puebla, Atlixco and Cholula!!
I love Chicago but get more anxious every year with robberies and carjackings. God Bless and we will be watching to see your next adventure!
Same, we love our city but it just became too much worrying about safety and everything else on top of that. And thanks so much 🤗
i took the metro about 4 times in cdmx, all i can say is wow. Although i would say, when it's less busy, its pretty straight forward to take which i loved, compared to nyc subways
It is! I think we got the hang of it. The only hard part is the crowds 🫠
Looking forward seeing y'all's experience living there! I enjoyed Mexico City when I visited in the past.🇲🇽
Great video as usual ❤
gracias!
You both are going to do great in CDMX, can`t wait to see everything you`re doing!
Thanks so much!!
🇲🇽 🇲🇽🇲🇽❤️ me encanta Ciudad de México. As to the size, remember that each city is just a collection of neighborhoods. Mexico City is one of the great cities of the world. I have probably spent 30 days there in the last decade and I feel like I am just scratching the surface. I am heading there as part of a trip in October for another five days and plan on visiting neighborhoods I haven’t been to like Santa Maria La Ribera. I can’t wait. I am excited to see your Mexico City content in the coming months and I think it will be great for your channel. It is a seriously under appreciated city and people have many misconceptions as you pointed out in your video. Jenny-I really hope the job uncertainty gets sorted out soon, how maddening!
Yay! Be safe and have fun. Hope the job offer comes through soon Jenny!
I hope so too! Thank you, Dina!
That is a classic example of Mexico when getting a Job welcome to the world of buracracy non of which you experience in USA. THAT IS THE REASON I WILL NEVER LEAVE AMERICA I LOVE MY COUNTRY
Woohoo! Theres nothing like being young in a vibrant city!! Enjoy every bit of it❤
Thank you, Michelle 🤗
I'm so glad you guys moved to Mexico City. When I retire, I am also moving to Mexico City, Polanco specifically. I love the culture, the food, the people, and having an international airport are among the many things that I love about that place.
nice! there really is a lot to love about this place
Ahhh!! My dream is to buy a place in Polanco! Another in Cancun. And, of course my “main” home here in Northern CA. I want to do the winter migration south and come back to CA during the summers (rainy season in Mexico). That’s my retirement dream.
That's probably the richest neighborhood in the entire country..meanwhile millions of good people in Mexico live on a few dollars a day..ok then.
Thank you again for sharing your stories. The two of you are going to thrive there. Of course there might be little headaches; but it’s all going to be worth it.
You’re inspiring so many people…..including me. 🎉
aw, thanks so much @Maxfield1978! 🙏🏽
Mexico City is awesome! 🥳 🌮
😁 excited to experience it!
Wow! No offer letter?! I hope it works out cuz I’m ready for y’all’s central Mexico videos! ❤
Yea, legal holdups with it being an international position and whatnot.. 🫠 but thank you! 😊
y'all inspired me to go to mexico, ended up going to puerto escondido (ate at the local comedores), cdmx, pdc, cozumel! much love from nyc
I love to hear it! 🤗❤️ glad you enjoyed those beautiful places in Mexico 🇲🇽
Honestly just stay in USA if possible telling you this from personal experience. Mexico has no rule of Law. Although America has its own problems USA atleast in USA you can trust the police
I am sorry about the lateness of the issuance that the job is yours, I remember you being both so excited about getting that massive job so wishing you all the luck that you get it and you both get to live in Mexico City doing what you want to do - Mexico City is great and I am sure the security situation has improved a lot since your parents were buzzing around as kids - I know my mum was shocked with how Lima had changed in the twenty years she was last there - living your lives happy there will put their minds at rest.
Thanks, Billy! Definitely, it’s not the same city they might’ve once known. Hopefully we can convince our parents to visit soon 😁
My wife and I just came back from a trip to Oaxaca, then to Mexico City. We loved Mexico City! We might make the move, depending on the next election 😵💫 we are retired. I was born in Mexico City 70 years ago.
Wow! Mexico City is great to visit! We recommend spending an extended amount of time here before making a big move. Because the city is huge and you want to see if you’re ready for that daily grind and movement.
All Mexicans have a bias against Mexico City just like all countries have a bias against their capital city or big cities. Everyone in the USA thinks NYC is awful and that all new yorkers are mean and weird, the French say the same thing about parisians, etc. My abuelitos were from Sonora and they hated CDMX and its people. That's why Yahritza said what she said. (That's why I'm really surprised everyone's attacking them when in fact all Mexicans trash talk CDMX, why single them out?, maybe because they're Chicanos? I don't know!.) The only Mexicans that think highly of CDMX are the locals, everyone else calls them "chilangos" (which means outsiders).
... Which only goes to show people's ignorance and prejudice.
To be fair, people from Mexico City think that Mexicans in the rest of the country are inferior. That's also true. The hatred is mutual. Just like USA folks think New Yorkers suck, New Yorkers think of the rest of Americans as country and backwards. So it goes both ways.
Yes exactly great point! It’s part of what baffles me too about all the hate
Yahritza went there personally and spoke the truth of her experience. Don't blame it on chisme de provincia.
The camera quality thoooo >>>
I enjoyed this video!
glad you enjoyed it! 🤗🫶🏽
I hope everything works out with your job! It sounds perfect for you.
I hope so too! Thank you!
Hi Kevin and Jenny, I and my husband is sending you both positive thoughts you will get the job. Have a wonderful 😊
Thank you so much!
Its allways very important if you plan to move somewhere go for some time and see if you really like it. When i got my American Visa i kinda wanted to move to Los Angeles, but when i visited the city for a plan 3 week, i couldt take it anymore, i only lasted for 5 days, and i appreciate my home town, Ensenada Baja , where at least i can walk to the store by the corner. Thats my advise.
That’s great advice. LA is really cool but I don’t think I could live there either. We rented an Airbnb for a month and used that to explore neighborhoods to figure out where we wanted to live and that worked well for us.
Cannot wait to see your adventures.
gracias! 🤗
Good luck! I look forward to your CDMX videos. Saludos desde San Jose, CA
Thanks! saludos right back to San Jose 🤗

Thanks so much to you both! We appreciate that a lot🙏🏽❤️ knowing we have your support 🥲🫶🏻 saludos to you in San Francisco
Welcome guys!! I saw you both walking that day but was a bit shy to say hi. I’ve been here with my partner for over a year, we’re from CA but we’re like you (that’s why I can relate to your videos too). Anyway I hope you end up liking CDMX, it can be hectic at times and that’s when you know it’s time to go visit a smaller town. If you have any questions or need any help you’re always welcome to hit us up. - Tony & Law
Aw! We'd love to say "hi" next time! Are you on the Chicanos in Mexico Facebook page? If not, please look it up and join (if you have FB), we'd love to connect 🤗
I hope that job pans out for you. Mexico City was one of my favorite places in Mexico I have visited while traveling around Mexico. Lived for a month there within a 5 minute walk to Bosque de Chapultepec. If you stay in one of the tourist zones like Roma Norte, La Condesa, it's a great place to live.
nice! we look forward to exploring all of those areas. Thanks for your comment!

My thoughts are that all roads lead to and emanate from CDMX. As has been the case for the last seven centuries. You don't 'get' Mexico fully if you don't 'get' Mexico City. A visit to Mexico focusing on its history and culture starts here.
@chacmool2581 thank you for that. I’m excited to take that next step in this learning experience 🇲🇽❤️
@@EatBailaTravel I envy you. Young and in Mexico City. Count your blessings!

Glad it’s helpful 😊
I just visited CDMX for first time. I'm Chicana from socal and I watched some of your videos before going and all I can say is how can you not adore CDMX? Air and UV are kind of a problem for me but it's just clearly a place to feel happiness and wonder at the culture and history and warm hearted people. Not sure if I would ever drive as I do in My medium/small city in the United States. My Mexican mother scared me about going to Mexico after I graduated highschool. That's 30 years now. CDMX has less of a warning than several other states
Love the way your channel is heading. I meet my wife in CDMX in 2001. We are a mixed family (white guy meets Mexican girl) It is as safe as any USA city. We take our teenagers to Mexico all the time. Eat drink and be happy
Thank you!. Eat, drink, dance*, and be happy! just needed to add our touch 😉😁
Hi from a Chicagoan now retired in San Miguel de Allende! I'm 3 hours away and this is a great foodie town! I have a bedroom for you! You can walk everywhere from my home! Congrats on moving down here and now I am hooked on your amazing videos!! Thanks for taking us along!
We love SMA! Thanks so much, so kind of you to offer ❤️🙏🏽
The City Center(Zocalo) where you are at is where 'Tenochtitlan' was situated, the pic in the background you displayed is"Teotihuacán" - a pre-Mexica site; Just saying. 🔺
Thank you for the clarification
I lived in Mexico city for a year as I watched your channel, you both were living in Queretaro, during that time I explored the city like the back of my hand if you want some recommendations let me know!

wow! that's a long time to live in one place. I've moved around all my life.
Ah cool - I have been following you guys and coming there soon for the Day of Dead for the first time - will be watching and maybe staying out of the metro lol

Hi there,
I LOVE CDMX. We live in Silicon Valley, California and we travel to Mexico at least once a year. There are many options for entertainment and culture. I've watched a few of your videos and I decided to subscribe to your channel because I think you two make a beautiful couple with a positive message and I can relate to your cultural background. Keep up the awesome work and I wish you two success in your endeavor.

Guanajuato, hermoso estado ❤️🇲🇽
Fun fact: The Latin population in Vancouver has skyrocketed in the past few years, but it's a completely different aspect of the population than in America--it's virtually all middle class people from either CDMX or Guadalajara...probably because you can't just walk into Canada.
Ahh good point there. Never thought about that. Thanks for the funny fact
Never heard Mexican-Americans from the Midwest calling themselves Chicanos.. that word is deeper than that
Well I lived in n y c for a close to a year and at first it intimidated me the hustle n bustle of a metropolis little by little I got used to it n winded up loving it.
We’re adaptable beings 💪🏽 we’re actually now really enjoying CDMX too! 😊
Mucha suerte 🇲🇽
Muchas gracias 😊
oh, wow! I can’t believe you don’t have the official offer yet. I’m sure it will all work itself out soon, but that has to be so stressful. 😕 coming for an art school background, I always heard about artists moving to Mexico City. It’s a cultural Mecca for artists and thus has always been a place I knew I’d want to spend a good chunk of time in. Sounds like you guys are seeing that there! Sounds like you’re already adjusting really well - just don’t get too smooshed on those trains!
Lol we’re doing our best 🚊🫠 hope you guys can visit us here someday!!

Glad you enjoyed, we hope we can make it out here.
Question... what other locations in México were you guys considering living? I can't pin point a place I want to live. Curious to see your top 3. Thanks
Puerto Escondido, Queretaro and Puerto Vallarta or Merida

i visited mexico city last Feb from Texas to attend Zona Maco, latin american's biggest art fair. i was impressed with the big boulevards and the public transportation during my 3 days. was not as polluted as i thought it would be and it was much greener than i thought (great tree cover).
i hope to attend zona maco again in 2024 so i can explore their famous food scene more. also would like to see their museums and ruins more (only went to carlos slim's museum, but was not impressed relative to texas or other u.s. art museums).
just did not have enough time there (i hope to check out their aztec artifacts and art someday, since the maya artifacts just finished a run in texas after the met in nyc - stunning). but clearly cosmopolitan city (just glad i did not have to drive a car there, much less use a cab during my short 3 day stay - subway was great for me).
there's soooo much to explore in this city! that sounds like a cool festival

Saludos y abrazos.
Immigrants coming to the USA often carry various misconceptions and biases. As someone who immigrated to the USA, I encountered many fellow Mexicans who held both accurate perceptions and biases about Mexico. I believe this stems from their desire to distance themselves from the realities they experienced in Mexico. I was fortunate to have grown up in Mexico City, granting me access to resources that many people from rural areas lack. My perception of Mexico evolved as I had the opportunity to attend university and enjoy a more comfortable life.
Also, Many of the Mexicans I met here with misconceptions about Mexico don't have an amazing life here either, which, to me, is also an interesting contradiction.
CDMX is like a separate country from the rest of Mexico.
Bien bebidos de nuevo a Chicago🙏😍por fin sise egresan? 😘❤️

You two look like you belong in CDMX! Coolest city in Mexico do doubt! ❤
So Jenny when will you know if you have the job? I can’t believe they have you waiting this long! Will pray for you it all comes together soon. My daughter has been very interested in something like this for a while. She wants to go to UNAM but only assumed she had to be a Mexican citizen to attend, which she can turn into with her Dad but hasn’t yet. But she’d prefer to go as a international student from a U.S. college.
gracias! 🤗 well, according to them "I'm their candidate of choice", and they're waiting on getting some sort of legal issues sorted out due to the fact that it's the university's first international job based in Mexico. It's taking longer than they expected, too. That's super cool that your daughter wants to attend UNAM! She could certainly go as an exchange student but I'm also fairly certain she could enroll as a non-citizen for her full education if she wanted to. Once I start the job I will know more and would be happy to offer guidance.
What’s the cost of living in CDMX?

Es verdad que los precios de las rentas han incrementado muchísimo en CDMX???
Sí, es cierto. Hicimos un video documentando nuestra busqueda de departamento y ahí se pueden ver los precios de renta.
Your quality of life is going to largely depend on where you live. Rent can be expensive in some places. Narvarte is probably a happy medium. And yes, you’ll never ever run out of things to do.
Yes we noticed that the areas that offer higher quality of life also are much more expensive 😬
