I was at Boldt Castle in September and while it was originally cancelled, it is pretty much completed today, with only the the top 2 floors in an uncompleted state, There is much more than the castle there as well. It is absolutely gorgeous and a wedding was occurring on the grounds as we were there. I highly recommend visiting it. The basement was a shock as tunnels go all through the island.

The main reason the SSC was never finished was that the Texas Congressional delegation, especially Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, managed to annoy the other members so much that they cancelled the Texas project in retaliation.
Also, many of the best universities in the US lobbied against the project to prevent creation of a new academic power that was attracting a great deal of talent away from the traditional research centers.

You can look across the river to see the foundation of the other half of the project. I went to Boldt Castle in June 2022 and, I agree, it is a very beautiful property! There was a wedding going on the day I was there also.
