I fly a 07 jab. Gen 3 motor . What a wonderful machine and engine. I work on a lot of rotax . I prefer the jabiru over a rotax.. . I fly a lot in the winter here in Ohio after 30 minutes I’m taking my coat off in my jabiru. ;)

Just curious but what about an engine like the Continental IO-550 any variant. The power and technology are impressive

As I recall from the Sun Machine days, there was a whistle slipped onto the tester to find TDC stroke, if that helps you. It really needs to be dead TDC cause that's where cyl taper is the widest. It's much harder on a Cadillac as there is no prop to hold onto, grin.

In the automotive world we call this a leak-down test but I regularly hear aircraft people wrongly referring to it as a compression test.

About the most useless diagnostic test of engine condition. Riddled with errors. This test is arguably responsible for the highest percentage of maintenance induced engine failures. “Compression is low on cylinder #4, time to replace the cylinder and piston.” Look up Savvy aviation…..

      I agree.
The static leak down test bears limited relevance to what power the engine develops under operating conditions.
In some ways the ordinary automotive compression check is more relevant, at least the engine is turning and developing it's own compression.
What the leak down test is VERY good for is diagnosing where any problems might be.
Aircraft engines have a built in dynamometer, it is called a propeller and if the engine can make the static RPM check, it is developing it's rated HP!
