An older video I found lurking around on the internet that I haven't seen on RUclips. So I figured I'd post it up.
This is a B&N Mobil Directo civilian defense siren on top of Yorkville Hose Co. (Station 60) in Pottsville, PA at W Norwegian St & N 20th St.
The siren was originally installed in 1965 and was refurbished a couple of years ago. This video was shot after they did work to the rotation mechanisms and belts. The siren now rotates much faster than normal but still packs a punch.
This is among the last few Mobil Directo sirens still in operation, and this one seems rather well maintained, hopefully to stay in service for years to come.

Watching the Pottsville MD spin in high range never gets old lol
Just so everyone knows, MD'S have a two speed rotator gearbox. They were typically shipped with the selector lever bushing placed so it would only easily go into low range, but Pottsville seemed to have changed it so the rotator is selected into high range. When I play with my gearbox it's amazing how different the ratios are. One could also even do a pulley swap from the box to the turntable wheel to make it go even faster haha
Wish tornado sirens like these were still able to be made

We used to have some of these in Colorado Springs, but our sirens were taken out in 1989.

If you listen real closely you can hear the slow-running STH-10B and the Siro-Drone winding up a few blocks away, nearby there is also a model 7AT and a fedelcode model 7.

I was in 3rd grade when they put this siren on top of the hosie. Walking back to yorkville school it went off while walking through rotary and I will always remember being frozen in fear. I literally couldn’t move and thought it was the end of the world
how heavy is that thing? I would thinks it would fall off. Sounds like a 3t22. Has it always rotated that fast?
IIRC It weighs around 800-900 pounds. Also, the siren never originally rotated this fast, it's been happening ever since the department essentially refurbished the siren a few years back. I forget exactly why it rotates like this, though.

@@1000TProductions That's exactly what happened to Dundee's 500-SHTT. After they refurbished it, they may have placed the belt on the pulley wheel wrong.

There is actually a setting in the rotator mechanism, that lets you change the speed of the rotator, also this is a mobile directo with an allertor projector.

@@halpmeamcringe1538wrong b&n Mobil directo had a short intake not the allertor intake which is a long intakes but this one Mobil directo that has an allertor intake they probably replaced the intake so snows won't easily get in older allertors like the 8/12 port and the 10/12 port one came in short intakes but 9/12 ones came in new intake

Thats how its mechanism is, the motor that turns the chopper is the same motor that turns the siren. The things on the side and back cover up belts that connect it

That one looks like it has a Aca allertor 125 9/12 port horn on it see look it looks like it’s made of fiberglass instead of steel and the bottom horn is larger
That's because the shroud is indeed fiberglass. When the siren was rebuilt by the department a few years back, they replaced the badly rusted steel housing with a salvaged Allertor fiberglass housing.

No Memphis' Mobil-Directo went a little while ago, Milwaukee and Potsville's Mobil-directos are the only ones still in use - as far as I know.

Not sure when they test it.
All I know is that it's used for fire calls, and it can go off at any time.
I'm pretty sure they don't test it at all, but you never know.
You would have to find that out through the city of Pottsville and schuylkill county
They test it first Saturday of the month.

Mobil Directo's always had longer horns, same with early model Allertors until they changed up the design a little bit

Oh! I was talking about the intake horn. Though now you mention that they replaced the shroud/housing with an Allertor's housing that makes sense now.
