  • I wish I'd taken the right cables with me, but then this video would have become a real monster... it's pretty long as it is. But this is it: my first mountain walking experience around Szczyrk, Poland. And what fun I had!

    Beautiful.
It's a bit far but I strongly recommend Bieszczady. Similar mountains but i think there are more Polish songs about Bieszczady than there are about Pieniny;)
The region is a lot poorer but it makes it more wild and rustic (once you get away from the tourist resorts). Kult America (an American expat in Poland) did a translation for a song by the name "Moje Bieszczady" by KSU. There is also a great song by Wojciech Młynarski "Po prostu wyjedź w Bieszczady" (Just ran away to Bieszczady).
Also correct on the mushroom, toadstool or muchomor in Polish. The name translates into fly-death from Polish.

The thrill of the chase fires you with enthusiasm.
Mazury Garbate - well worth a wander around, too, in due course.

"In Praise of Walking: A New Scientific Exploration", O'Mara Shane. - recommended.
By the by, weather doesn't enter into this. Even on a gloomy November day you shouldn't shy away from taking a wander in the mountains, through the fields, into/in the woods, around the city (at night too) ... might give you a thrill and recharge your batteries better than lounging about. Btw, I’d venture a guess that lovely May and gloomy November are the best months to run across the Polish Soul out in the open (pun intended).
Here you are, "Listopady" ("Novembers") by Władysław Broniewski, a piece of the Polish soul.

In regards to the walking times shown on the signes - the climbing times and descending times differ. So it can show in Szczyrk that you need 2 hours to climb a mountain, but when you on the mountain and check how long will it take to go back to Szczyrk, same path can be shown as 40 minutes. It's shown this way in the maps as well, you always have to consider the arrows next to the times. Little trivia 😉

That's true, yes - but I find it often takes me as long to go down the hill as it does to go up - my knees start to complain very quickly!

@@CloselyObservedWorld That's the reality check then 😉 My comment is only to explain the signes, they can be a bit confusing, if the logic behind them is unknown.

What the hell ill just translate them for you:
    KSU "Moje Biesczady" (My Bieszczady)
    Mountains to the sky
    and a scream of verdancy
    field road among flowers
    and a broken cross
    Stream hidden in shade
    and an overgrown orchard
old orthodox church under a larch
    and a broken bell
    Overgrown cemetery
    in it wild elderberries
how many tears, how much pain
    how much human blood
    Moon over Otryt
    sky full of stars
    grey dromouses dance around
    San lulls us to sleep
    That's how they are
    That's my Bieszczady
    That's how they are
    That's my Bieszczady
    Overgrown with Alder
    fields of an old village
who had plowed them, who has sown them
    nobody remembers
    Dead spruces creak
    That's a wooden cry
    The world ends in Sokoliki
    Further only forest
    Wire on the borders
    divides nations two
    a wall of hatred divides
    and terrifies me
    San is so shallow
    On Beniowa shore
    divides people, divides thoughts
    terrible is it's wrath
    That's how they are
    That's my Bieszczady
    That's how they are
    That's my Bieszczady
i'll do the other one if you read this;)

@@CloselyObservedWorld I suggest listening with music. Its available on YT by "Moje Biesczady".
The Kult America version has nice footage from those mountains in the video. Basically it can serve as a teaser presentation for them.
And if you know the song you will be able to impress your 30-40 year old Polish friends;)
