My main electric is a gretsch falcon. It's the old school big body guitar. The filtertrons sounds nice and full bodied, but cut through a mix with ease. It was a present from my wife. I was in a band where the lead guitar player played a les paul and i had a 5420. We played everything from grunge to reggae with a little country stylings thrown in and that tandem of guitars played so well together. Gretsch guitars are seriously versatile.
I own three and I'd NEVER part with them. A Duo Jet 140th Anniversery issue, a Sparkle Jet, and my fave, a G5422T with TV Jones pups in it. They are fantastic guitars without the weight or the muddiness of Gibson guitars. Versatile? OF COURSE they are. Beautiful to look at and fun to play. Gretsch is well worth the price.
This inspires me to play mine-i bought it two years ago and really haven’t spent any time with it. I had just been disappointed by a Gibson 335 experience and sold that, but i saw a 5622T on a GC wall and it was beautiful for 20% of what i sold the Gibson for. Instant GAS.
I have 3 Gretsch guitars. 2 of them from your Epsom store, a G5422tg and a G5420t. Then around 3 months ago, I got a Gretsch pristine P-90. All 3 are great guitars and cover so much musical scopes. In the last 2 years of acquiring these brilliant guitars, it makes me wonder why I left it so long to get one. My last Gretsch was around 20 years ago, but I didn’t really know much about them then. It was a syncromatic bigsby loaded Les Paul style, with same control layout.
That's awesome to hear you got them from us! That G5422tg is one of my favourites too with the double cut aways. Looks like you have a great collection that covers a ton of sounds! Great stuff
Like I heard Jessie Hughes once say , when people think of guitars that cost this much they l lean toward Gibson. Would I really take a Japanese Gretsch over a Gibson 330 or 335 for example ? Are the Electromatic series really a work horse or live and recording worthy ? The only Versatility of found in the affordable Electromatic series is Bright & twangy and more bright and twangy. Great review , beautiful guitar but it's still a (pass) for me on Gretsch.
Some bands who have used Gretsch, the cramps, jack white, George Harrison,at the drive in, green day, guns n roses, queens of the stone age, foo fighters, AC DC etc.
