  • The Colombian city of Medellín has long been associated with drug lord Pablo Escobar, and with the popularity of Netflix's Narcos, a new influx of tourists are visiting the city to see where the infamous kingpin operated. The Guardian’s Iman Amrani speaks to the people whose lives were affected by Escobar, and with the city’s mayor who is trying to turn Medellín’s narrative away from its dark past

      @@theobuniel9643 I completely disagree. The Netfix portrayal may seem sympathetic when seen through the eyes of a Colombian, because expensive cars and beautiful women are everything you need to attract a young Colombian malandro to work for the narcos. To a European or a Briton Escobar is the ultimate madman, the psycho, the ultimate criminal. We watch "Narcos" and need to pinch ourselves that this really happened, because it seems like a made-up Hollywood movie. The cars, the money and the women - they don't make Escobar seem cooler, it just makes the whole story more absurd and made-up. And yet it's (mostly) real.
      In Europe you pay for your crimes, especially violent ones. No cars, no women, no riches are worth having, if shortly afterwards you'll be locked away until the day you die... And even the most hardened criminals know that. Sorry if this comes across as insensitive or as criticizing, I'm just trying to point out why the European/UK/US view on this might be different than yours.

    People focus too much on individuals and don't give enough importance to the social-economical environment that shapes those individuals. Pablo was a product of a very unequal society where opportunities for upward mobility were very limited. He started out smuggling potatoes into Columbia from neighboring countries, that tells you something about the economy of the country at the time. He became the first Colombian billionaire and appeared on the Forbes Richest list, in a country where the only way to get rich at the time, was to be born rich. Ambitious and ruthless individuals exist in every country, they can become tech billionaires or cartel leader, depending on the opportunities a country offers.

    I visited Hacienda Napoles in 2011 and his other hacienda La Manuela in Guatapé and wow its huge especially Napoles. When you come into Napoles you're like oh wow there is nothing left, then you keep driving and out of the blue huge property comes into view. It's changed a lot since 2011 with now a prison within the property and some hotels so it doesnt have too much of a look like before.

    Keeping monuments of dark history is important. It gives a great forum for nations to educate both tourists and native citizens of the full story in a way where people can connect emotionally with the horrors that happened and the joy when it came to an end.
    It is often a difficult thing to do but when it's done right, these scarring places can become places of healing. Being able to make a horrible thing work to the advantage of the city/country is a powerful tool.
    This is why I don't agree with what the mayor is saying but I understand why he is doing it. Although he calls it predatory tourism, he should see it as an opportunity to educate tourists and show them the real Colombian and Medellín culture.

    • @jorgemariozurek9984
      @jorgemariozurek9984 5 лет назад

      O S the problem is that the people giving those tours don’t always have the intention to educate about our horrible past but to contribute to the portrayal of Pablo Escobar as the ‘good guy’. I understand your point but I believe it is necessary to demolish the building to honor the victims and not the criminals.

    Seems to me that the mayor and others should not be quite so opposed to these tours. Tourism is tourism and people who come to Medellín will love it. But their belief is that those guys crying "yay Colombian cocaine" broadly represent who takes the tours. And the tour guides are looked down on as former cartel people. This it's all seen as not contributing to the legit economy nor to the image they want to project of Medellín. It's a bit snooty and not really an issue. Medellin is booming and a beacon on progressive planning.
