- When one of my viewers suggested I play a recently-released horror-themed Mario 64 romhack, I was skeptical, but interested.
I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into.
There is Nothing Behind the Castle is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Even in the often-confounding world of romhacks, there's really nothing else like it.

I think what this is trying to say is, in a different universe, video game characters have consciousness, but they must see something wrong in their world in order to unlock that consciousness, and the sheer fact that a video game, on the outside, looks like a fun adventure, but on the inside, is a nightmare-fueled prison is terrifying. And, if my theory is correct, than any video game in that universe, the main character (or a side character, enemy, etc.) can see what is wrong with their world and realize there is no escape. Over time, slowly realizing that they are being put in the same loop over and over again, to play through levels, kill enemies, get more supplies, get upgrades, over and over again. The sheer thought of that makes my blood run cold.
How do you know it isn't like that in _our_ universe?

The only thing I'm confused about is what the animal skulls symbolize.
This is psychological horror. It's incredible, how it doesn't really do anything very scary, but instead touches the fears you never knew you had.

To me, it implies that this is truly hell, and that the skull, a goat's skull, is the devil himself, ruling over a vast domain of despair.
The fact that he included some of the rom hack’s high quality cutscenes in the montage was kind of funny and added a bit of lightheartedness to the rom hack

The "L is real 2401" star is weird because one more thing that happend is that 24 years and 1 month after mario 64 relased, data miners found that Luigi was planed to be originally in the game but was scrapped.

It reminds me of this marble video game I played on xbox as a child. The sky box was really sunny and beautiful, except on the bottom where it was just this stormy void, it always unnerved me
I have an experience of this in minecraft bedrock, traveling beyond the games comprehension cause a grid where movement is impossible to move unless your in an other dimension, i also have gotten an amber alert while playing an online game, both times unsettled me

For me it's not the fear of the endless void, it's the fear of not knowing what's out there. You know there's nothing but you feel like there is and that's what put's you on edge.
I agree with your sentiment. This reminds me of a particular aspect of human nature: the fear of the unknown. What does this have to do with anything, you may ask? Well, I believe it is a contributing factor to the fear some of us get from seemingly infinite spaces. As you've suggested, we don't know what may lie out in the horizon. Even though these seemingly endless voids probably have nothing of interest beyond what the human eye can see, we still feel as if there should be something waiting for us.

I think the skull knows that the stars are the keys to the castle, and its goal is to stop Mario from finding them, but knowing Mario, it will take more than that to scare him away.

I had EXACTLY the same process and was genuinely and delightfully tricked and blown away. It was only after trying to look up the romhack and not finding it, then getting (somewhat) confirmation here in the comments that the realisation hit. Ahhh-MAY-zing.

Damn, even if it's a horror game, there's still gotta be atleast one or two jokes
A few notes... the skull never served any purpose, it never had an origin, it never had a point to exist. The audio effects whenever Mario spoke were very cool, but they also had no reason to be there. You could argue it was the infinite voices of Mario speaking, but then why are all the voices different? He says at the end that the infinite worlds are the same. Finally, the hanged Marios gimmick felt as juvenile as Sonic exe, but at least _that_ had some kind of ending/payoff at the end when we come to realise that they were probably from those other realities and Mario's memory was somehow linked to all the other versions of himself.
The lingering shots were far too long and had me checking the video to make sure it was still playing in a couple of instances and took away any uneasiness it had built because I simply wondered when it was going to move on. The scenes... I don't know how they specifically knew to activate but a couple of times it looked like you needed to stand in very specific places for a little while and if that's the case, that's kind of bad because it means you're unlikely to find those specific scenes.
However, the scenes themselves were beautifully rendered, absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the animation was creepy as hell. Overall, solid props to the creator of the romhack, and I hope they continue to create and improve~

The things that make me scared is that this rom hack is really different than the other.
It's not about screamer or bloody things : all is about the atmosphere.
The atmosphere maked me uncomfortable, I turn my phone many times because of it

I think is a deer skull, (even without the antlers the nose is very similar) it has some spiritual meaning life the cycle of death and rebirth, but is often associeted with the occult so i think theft king put it in there for shock value or because it was cool

The scariest part about this is that it was *Lakitu* filming all of this… but… how was he not even terrified? I mean… Mario was having an existential crisis but Lakitu? He was… strangely calm. Another thing that feels weirder than scary, is that those skull creatures seem to be enormous flying creatures… and why did they keep following Mario…? Did they want something from him? If so what did they want from him?

That would be horrific, waking up feeling like you where in a dream, remembering pass gameplays but the one thing that stand out in every one of those was how you where always in a "box" in an endless void nothing new and no one else just you and your thoughts and than it resets just making you do everything again until you remember it all again

Holy shit. I think the implication being made is that, everytime Mario dies, the result isn't the clock being rewound to before you entered the level so you can try again - it's Mario getting thrown out into a different universe where he hasn't died yet. Even getting a Game Over just returns you, the player, back to the menu; once you return to the game, nothing has changed.
No matter how many times Mario dies, there's no escaping the Super Mario 64 multiverse. He's stuck there forever.

If you released the animations on their own it'd be kind of cool, but you create this whole fake identity for something that doesn't even exist, making people think theres some sick ass fangame out there when in reality it's just you spouting nonsense over footage of an animation. It's not even that I disliked the animation, I thought it was great actually. And it would be great if it was released by itself in separate parts, I think you'd probably even have a shit ton more people watching it and analyzing it as it's own piece of fiction. But creating some cheesy 2010 creepypasta centered around it just makes it confusing and upsetting because you present it as if it's true without ever telling the audience that it isn't, and instead doubling down with fake gameplay footage to make it seem more legitimate. There are ways to go about this without doing it the way you're doing it which is why it's so disappointing that you keep choosing to do it this way.

@@TylerNovakYT Yeah, I have to agree. I enjoyed the concept of the video and the animated segments, but I thought the execution of everything else needs some improvement. I think it would be better if he did a full fake let's play of this and then did a recap/analyzation video on it. It would get him more view, attention, and more stuff for us, the audience, to chew on.
