I met steveo in 2003 in the parking lot at Walmart after Lollapalooza and im not sure what he was on but I could tell it was multiple substances... I felt really bad for him. he was skating around the tour bus while Preston and wee-man were in getting stuff for the drive over to st Louis. He actually approached my friend and I and started asking us about ourselves and you can tell he just needed someone to talk to. He was genuinely a nice dude and I remember thinking I hope this guy can get clean someday.
Its really fucking great to see him clean and genuinely happy, all while still maintaining his personality. He didn't need the drugs to do the stuff he did and its beyond awesome that he turned it around before it was too late.
Why feeling bad for the man? Because he was on drugs! Maybe he really had a great time, drugs must be anyones choice if they want to, its not abuse

I had surgery and couldn't ride for 6 months, wasn't sure if I would ever surf again and was extremely depressed.
My life didn't make sense, but once I got back in the water, it was like the stairs aligned and everything was the way it was supposed to be.
Hope we can share some barrels someday, thanks for the inspiration to keep chasing & in a way for inspiring everything we do.
Having nothing to do and being left with your own thoughts will make anyone feel depressed. I noticed as "humans" we need to be doing things to keep us occupied, maybe it's a constant distraction from our sorrows.

When I fell into a deep depression I traveled the world surfing with my bros too!

I just surf whatever is breaking at the end of my street and stay in my cave alone, but truth, depression in action is better than depression sitting around.
@Blue 30's depends how depressed ,sometimes I don't/ can't / won't leave the house and do miss riding perfect waves with good freinds , if I CAN push through it and go, I always felt better for it, though I am still depressed. It's not gonna go away so I have to keep doing what I love , it's taken too much in the past.

Really is, I started surfing for the first time this year and just being out in the water early morning with nothing but silence and the sound of the water is beautiful. Unfortunately I tore my ACL and both meniscus in my right knee skating a few months ago so it will be a while before I’m back on the surfboard but it will be my new go to since skating is probably done for me now
@@Lukemasonmedia How old are u may I ask? Skating is all I do and I'm about to turn 30. Kinda been thinking about giving it a break because I'm hurting so much but goddamn people like Tony Hawk keep ripping at 50+.
@@NikomaGrob I ache less at 50 just surfing than I did skating every day at 30, skatings brutal but the absolute best shit ever, right?! I chose surfing ,though, I couldnt justify the poundings skating. That said my advice is always to keep skating!!!

This gives me inspiration to go out and try something different and see if I can accomplish that task and not give up on myself. This is amazing!

I remember catching my first wave, it was pure bliss, I hadn't had that happiness in a long time. Surfing really helped me through depression and a toxic relationship. I live in MInnesota, so I can't wait to be able to get back out on the coasts and tear it up.

Guy has the most unbelievably awesome attempt at "living life" that I've ever seen....just beyond hard core.
After watching so many of these videos, you are hands down an inspiration to me. I started using heroin at 14. I stopped at 21 when I found out I was having a daughter. I’ve now been clean for over 6 years. Unfortunately my depression and anxiety have caused me such hell to the point where I didn’t want to live anymore. I put myself in such a deep depression that I wanted nothing more than to just die. The way people treat me and just the way life is now has just been so overwhelming. I was raised to love and never judge. But it seems that’s all people do anymore and I don’t know if I can handle it anymore. I’m finally on medication to help me and found out I have PTSD AND BPD. My whole life I’ve struggled but watching your videos has given me hope. I wish I could go travel and do fun stuff like you but Buffalo NY isn’t too bad, at least I can sled lol. I guess what I’m saying is thank you Steve - o (never did I think I’d say that lol) but man you are what I want to be. And I hope and pray I make it to the same point as you. You’re a legend.

Surfing has changed my life many times. Its been my escape and go to when emotions were running high. Keep at it bro. Stay clean and live for the wave.

I lost my little boy just over a year ago. Life has been so empty without him. I rented a board last week and rode my first wave. I haven't smiled like that in a long time. Just got an Odysea Log, and can't wait to get into the water again. I still think about him all the time, but it's nice to have something to look forward to again. Happy you found something to pull you out from your depression Steve-O, it's pretty cool it just happened to be surfing for both of us.

He’s not saying that’s the solution for anyone. The point is that he found something he was passionate about and kept him going. Not everyone can travel, but everyone can find something they’re passionate about. (And no, I’m not saying that’s a cure all. Lots of us need medication too- including myself. But passions can help give purpose)

Magic the Gathering saved me from Opioid addiction and the following down spiral of depression. You're an inspiration man, like yourself I refuse painkillers to this day. Gone through a bad hernia and the surgery this year and now I'm on my way to fixing a chipped hip.

When you decided to get clean, did you ever deal with anxiety? If so, how did you overcome it??
Things that help me with anxiety is finding something/ somethings for each sense.
Sight, sound, smell, touch, taste (if you can)
So right now i can see my computer, a stack of clothes, i can smell my pencils, hear the fridge, and me typing, i can feel my clothes, i can feel it is cold, the paper next to me, i can taste the crisps i finished about 10 minutes ago.
I was advised to make a box which contains things which can stimulate my senses. / have good memories
I have some stones my brother got me (sight and touch, good memory)
strong breathmints, (taste, smell. can crinkle packet for sound)
I cant remember what else is in their but you get the idea.
Pretty much anxiety is your body going into fight or flight mode. This part of your brain the amygdala, is like the most primal part, it understands threats but has no concept of time. Say for example you get anxious about tests. thinking about the test you have tomorrow can cause your body to perceive it as a current threat, in the same manner as if a bear just entered your room.
This experience puts you in the now situation can disconnect you somewhat form other experiences around you.
By focussing on what you can experience at the moment then this can help take you out of the fight or flight response.
Not sure if i have explained it well, happy to elaborate if you want me too, or can make things clearer if they made no sense.
Focus on things you can see around you, if you need to get up and pick up a candle or whatever because you cant smell anything thats ok. Having chewing gum or mints on you at all times can help if you are going outside for example.
A second thing that helps, is an oldie but a goodie. Just focus on breathing slowly take 3 seconds to breathe in, hold it for 3, breathe out for 3, stop for 3, then breathe back in for 3 and repeat.
If you having a panic attack or something you wont be able to do it straight off the bat but keep focussing on it and it you can control it.
Another thing is that because your breathing is out of control your body thinks there is something wrong so continues to act in that manner, thats why keeping your breath under control is important
