      He's not an expert at carry techniques or tactical shooting techniques (though 3-gun has started to bring some tactical shooting to competition shooting). He's a competition shooter. He doesn't practice shooting in less-than-ideal conditions (such as those required in self defense shooting, using cover, shooting off-hand, shooting from awkward positions/stances...
      The goal of competition training is to increase the speed and accuracy of the shooter in ideal circumstances.

    Most of the insecurities about carrying with a round in the chamber, comes from an inexperience. Once upon a time I also felt a bit nervous. But that was my first year I ever owned a semi auto handgun 20 years ago. My advice to anybody that doesn't feel safe doing so, spend some more time with your pistol. Dry fire and live fire. Clean it often. Just spend time with it and the fear will go away.

      Another thing is to understand the mechanical aspects of what you carry. I carry a 1911 cocked, locked and ready to rock because I understand the design of the 1911. Glock, no way, never owned one and seen too many videos of people shooting themselves, if I could get my hands on one to study the internals I might change my mind.

    Well I think there's a positive side to carrying your weapon without a round in the chamber, I'm army and in my country we carry our pistol without a round in the chamber when we're just moving around in relatively peaceful areas.
    Reasoning being we can use the visual effect of chambering a round to scare / halt an opponent, that said... anytime we're expecting trouble or unsure, we carry it chambered.
    The best self defense tool you can get, is situational awareness as to avoid being caught unarmed. If you have to draw after the conflict has started, you're already behind.

    • @EtherFox
      @EtherFox 5 лет назад +3

      Americans love to fantasize about being heroic cowboys with a tenth of a second draw.

    • @Texas240
      @Texas240 4 года назад

      @@suijuris7921 - the point is that you don't know when the need for the seat belt or your ccw will be. If you knew, then obviously you would prepare ahead of time.
      Since you don't know when "that time" will be, you have to do your preparation when you get in the car or when you holster your ccw.
      If the weapon is in a proper holster, it can't go off. If a round is not in the chamber, you are carrying simply to make yourself FEEL as though you have a means of defense, not that you actually do.
      Remember, the bad guy gets to go first and they know exactly when it's going to happen. So, they are prepared to attack you. You should be prepared to defend yourself.
      Otherwise, as someone else pointed out, it won't take "just a split second" to chamber, it will take the entire rest of your life.
      Also, it takes someone like Jerry a split second, in an excercise where he knows exactly when he needs to load and has his hand on the weapon.
      It will take the average person longer. Remember, by the time you realize that you need to draw, you're already under attack, possibly with a knife wound or bullets coming at you.

    As a law enforcement officer I can verify that you are absolutely correct that in a high stress shoot situation the hit rate is way lower in the majority of the cases.. My advice to most people who ask me is do whatever makes you the most comfortable. If they just don't want to carry hot, at least they have the option to try to defend themselves if the need arises. I personally carry hot, but I use an IWB holster and my draw is very unlikely to cause an accidental discharge. Most importantly, whichever way you decide to carry, PRACTICE and become very familiar with location on the body, draw and whichever other techniques you may need to practice in order to use the tools at hand to defend yourself!! @bad bad mc bad i always teach women to carry a revolver. simply because most of the ladies i teach are older and don't have the hand strength to rack a slide or even load a mag. a .38 revolver like a Chief Special or that size and type is generally perfect for them. i generally do a spring job on them to make them work better. i lost my Chief to my Wife years a go and she is very proficient with it and i wouldn't want to be on the business end of a mad woman with one with some .38 HP ammo in it. in a fight an auto pressed up hard against your assailant can take the firearm out of battery not so with a revolver. a revolver pressed up against someone hard just makes a larger wound channel. if you're going to carry a firearm on an empty cylinder or barrel. IMO you should just go to the hardware store and buy a hammer to carry. it's way cheaper and doesn't need ammo and won't jam and it's just as effective.

    I can't help but believe the chances of a negligent discharge, which can happen in many different ways when you keep a round in the chamber, are far greater than the likelihood that I will find ever myself in a situation where half a second or so will mean the difference between life or death for me (or whomever I'm trying to defend). I've watched hundreds of real life gun fight situations, caught on video by security cameras or dash cams or body cams, and very few of them did not have a period of time sufficient for a defender to draw and load a round to defend themselves. If someone is actually shooting at you before you draw your gun, that half second or so might make a difference. However, in nearly every video I've seen, there are chances for a defender to get their gun drawn and into action while the perp is distracted collecting their loot or watching someone else or even showing their gun and then putting it away so they have both hands free.
    I doubt there are any reliable statistics, but my guess is there have been far more people shot accidentally because a round was in the chamber than have been killed because they couldn't get a round chambered and fired in time.
    Just to be clear, I'm talking about people who are just average law-abiding civilians, not people involved in policing or other endeavors where they are much more likely to encounter an armed assailant.

      Exactly. If your are attacked unexpectedly from close range, you’ll be dead no matter how you carry. Going to disagree with most of you about one in the tube. I chamber a round only when I am going into circumstances with a heightened danger possibility: dark parking lot, gas station in a bad part of town, etc.
    I'm around the public a lot. Chances of an accidental discharge are much higher than not having the one second to rack the slide. Have an AD in public and potential serious consequences.
    I made the conscious decision that if I'm in a circumstance where I don't have the chance to chamber, too bad for me. I probably wasn't going to have time to react anyway.
    Most of you act like you're going to turn the corner and all of ISIS is hiding out to thunk you on the head. Simply isn't so. And if somebody gets that close going from "normal" to insane in a fraction of a second, my best defense is not trying to draw while in a fistfight until I can kick them away and put some distance between us.
    And if someone wrestles my weapon away, I have 3 seconds to react while they try to fire on an empty chamber.
    I'll add I have several friends, all very experienced, and none of them want to carry on a loaded chamber. If you do, great. But a lot of us make the decision to play the safety odds of no AD, plus it gives me one more second of time to make a decision if I can, or WANT to shoot.

      FYI, I've owned and shoot firearms for 48 years. I don't "play" with firearms. If I'm going into a situation where I want increased readiness I do in advance. However, if you can't chamber a round in the dark you probably shouldn't be carrying.
      And people I know who believe like I do are very experienced shooters. Are we all schmucks because you favor something different?
      Ever been to a covered range and look at the barge board of the overhead? It's usually full of bullet holes from accidental discharges. The pistol range at Ft. Benning had more holes than wood last time I shot there.

    My concern about a loaded chamber on many guns would be a small child getting a hold of the gun and pulling the trigger. A child younger than eight could easily pull a five pound striker fired trigger but likely could not rack the slide to load it. Another situation would be if someone saw your gun especially in a hip or back position and grabbed it away from you and tried to shoot you. With the empty chamber the gun will not fire and would give you the chance to grab it back. My preferred method would be a chambered round in a striker fired pistol with the safety on. You can still operate the gun with one hand. I never found the safety to slow me down while rabbit hunting.

    When I first got my CCDW I carried cold for the first couple of months, I wanted to make absolutely sure that no negligent discharges would occur as I took the time to drill drawing and firing from IWB concealment. After I realized I never failed to keep my booger picker off the boom switch I decided to start carrying hot.
    I would encourage that same practice for everyone who is starting out.
    Since I suspect a few people will be here that are not quite sure about carrying a firearm for self defense and might have not learned all the acronyms yet here are the definitions of the two I used: CCDW is shorthand for Concealed Carry of a Deadly Weapon permit and IWB is short for Inside the WaistBand holster, which is a holster that keeps your gun between you and your pants.

In this situation most people put one hand out to keep the attacker away, and then draw their weapon. This means you will only have one hand free while your other hand is most likely trying to keep your attacker at bay. I have seen MANY self defense situations where this is exactly what happens and thankfully most people had one in the chamber. One thing I've learned when concealed carrying is that I had to train myself to carry groceries, pump gas etc. with my left hand and keep my right hand free to quickly access my pistol. Sometimes I keep my hand on the pistol in my pocket, depending on the circumstances.

    Now, I wouldn't dare carry that way.
    Carry empty and die or carry hot and survive !

      Fear mongering. Most of those situations are in other countries where there is more violence, like Brazil. If you live in a dangerous area, or have a dangerous profession, it makes sense, but I don't think I've ever seen one video where the person drew and fired when they didn't have time to rack it. There are a couple where the person thought it was loaded, but forgetting and intentionally carrying that way are 2 different things. Not a single one where the person tried to rack the slide on the draw and failed.

    • @tortol4847
      @tortol4847 5 лет назад +7

      @@inspired4more Having time to rack the slide isn't the only concern. You may not have both hands free to rack it. You might be pinned and not have the room to rack it on your pants. Modern pistols are the result of decades of engineering and real world use. Unless it's some cheap POS, it's not dangerous at all to carry with one in the chamber (assuming you know how to handle it properly that is).

      @@tortol4847
      There are plenty of realistic and imaginary scenarios where one might not have time to do it, but the truth is that the likelihood of ever having to draw your pistol is rare enough. And 9 times out of ten if you do, you won't ever have to fire. That's a real statistic. Here's another one: Twice as many people are accidentally shot than actually fire a gun in self defense. Add those two together, and an objective person would logically infer that carrying chambered is an unnecessary risk. But this topic is never objective. People have accepted it as a tactical necessity because they fear not being able to draw and shoot quick enough. Then they say things about how those who choose not to do it that way are scared of themselves or the gun. But either can be a result of either fear or experience. The fact is that there is risk involved with carrying a gun either way, and there is nothing wrong with minimizing that risk. Assuming that everyone simply must be a tactical ninja in order to carry is nonsensical, as is assuming everyone carries the same level of risk. I carry hot only when I'm in certain parts of town, and simply don't see the point everywhere I go. That is from experience, and I'm comfortable with the risk either way. I don't carry a gun because I'm scared of what lurks behind every shadow, but so I don't find myself without should it be needed. Only under very specific circumstances within an already unlikely scenario will it make any difference.

    • @flipgunderson1946

      Idc one way or the other but don't assume you'll survive simply because you carry hot, Mr. Tacticool

    • @tortol4847
      @tortol4847 4 года назад +6

      @@inspired4more You're overstating the risk involved with carrying a loaded gun. You act like everyone open carries with an exposed trigger and no safety. The reality is that pretty much any modern pistol is drop safe. Combine this with a hard shell holster and you practically eliminate any chance of an accidental discharge. Police carry guns every single day, thrashing about on the ground with their gun on their hip and I have NEVER seen an instance of their guns just "going off". Modern pistols are mechanically safe and are virtually impossible to fire without a deliberate pull of the trigger. This is solved by carrying in a holster, which is standard with carrying anyways. Realistically even if it did just "go off", unless you're appendix carrying it will almost certainly miss your body and just shoot into the ground. Risk of accidental discharge is really the only argument against carrying hot, and it's not a good one at that. If you have some video of a gun inadvertently discharging while in someone's holster, feel free to send it my way. The only one I've seen even close to that was when a guy holstered his gun, his shirt got caught in the trigger guard and when he bent over shortly after it went off.
      Lastly, I'm curious as to how many of those people who accidentally shot themselves did it while cleaning their gun. The vast majority, I'm guessing.

    I think a thumb safety is a great compromise to having a loaded chamber. I know you didn't mention it, but I'm 62 years young and every gun I fired as a young boy growing up in the Missouri Ozarks hunting squirrels and rabbits and such always had a safety or an exposed hammer. It just became 2nd nature to have a safety on a weapon. I think it's just a matter of training.

    Hey Jerry, as usual this was an excellent video. I really appreciate your humility in addition to your expertise. Personally, I carry with a round chambered, my family have all been trained to assume there is a round chambered in every firearm in our home and all of us understand that time is one of the most important factors in any potential lethal engagement. In addition, every firearm we own has excellent safety mechanisms to ensure that the weapon cannot be unintentionally discharged with a chambered round. As you have such excellent, recognized and wide ranging experience, maybe you could share with us the best semi auto pistols for loaded chamber carry (e.g., best engineered safety mechanisms for carry with a chambered round)? Thanks again for your clear expertise, leadership and willingness to help folks understand how to safely and effectively use their firearms. You're definitely an outstanding resource for any shooter, regardless of experience and training. I enthusiastically agree with others commenting that you are a trusted firearms expert by any measure.
