  • England 1-0 Norway
    International Match
    Wednesday 3 September 2014
    Wembley Stadium connected by EE
Roy Hodgson insists England deserved their win over Norway despite having to rely on Wayne Rooney’s second-half penalty to earn victory.
The Three Lions had the better of the first half possession but failed to capitalise on any of the chances they created.
And it was only when Raheem Sterling was brought down in the area by Omar Elabdellaoui in the 68th minute that England seized their opportunity following a change in tactics midway through the second period.
Captain Rooney stepped up and confidently fired home from 12 yards - notching his 41st goal for England in the process.
And Hodgson said: "In the end I thought we were good value for our victory.
"The injection of pace of Danny Welbeck, Fabian Delph and James Milner and a slight change in the system meant we got back on top again and started to create chances.
"The good thing with the players we have at the moment is that many are playing early matches in their international career and it's good that we have these options.
"We definitely changed the way we were playing in terms of system with about 20-25 minutes to go and I thought that worked well too when Welbeck came in behind Daniel Sturridge.
"I thought that got us going as well and in the end with a little bit of luck we would have aggravated the score. The important thing was the victory."
But despite his positive outlook, Hodgson knows there is plenty still to work on. He added: "We started the second half poorly and I was disappointed by our first 10-15 minutes at the start of the second half.
“Joe Hart had to make a couple of saves having been pretty much a bystander in the first half but luckily we got ourselves going again.”
England’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign kicks off on Monday when the team face Switzerland in Basel.
Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback has withdrawn from the squad through injury.

    GK: Joe Hart
    LB: Baines
    CB: Jones
    CB: Cahill
    RB: Walker
    CDM: Wilshire
    RAM: Walcott
    CAM: Sterling
    LAM: Ox

Boring, boring England. Not surprised there was such a poor turn-out to the match.

Please just play Sturridge, Sterling and Welbeck up front they play so well together and are probably the best on the England team. Put Rooney mid field he doesn't seem to get involved enough and move about, hes good but its just not working. We obviously have shit mid field especially now we don't have Gerrard so put Rooney in mid and i want Barkley in the next game.

BlackOpsAmazing even though I don't like the English national team now (not that many great players like they used to have imo) I do agree with you that they would play much better with Rooney hanging back in midfield.

Once again..we saw the 2 brillant liverpool players(sturridge & sterling) 2 arsenal players(wilshere & chamberlain), 1 chelsea player in defence(cahill) and even an everton player(baines). But fat Rooney got the goal.. thanks to sterling!! -_-

England dominated the vast majority of the game. Yes, we had little amount of shots on target, but what gets me is if we don't score 3or4 goals we slate our own team. We have a lot of young talent and although we're a long way off having that unity that the likes of German and Holland (most recently) have shown, but if we get behind our country and support hem instead of slating every performance it would help in building a unity that we'd see on the field. If we continue to slate them 1 by 1 then only perform as individuals. So how about we get behind the lads on Monday and be true supporters!

England did as good as they could, unfortunately there are not enough English players in the premiership getting experience of playing top quality football, the English clubs seem have no loyalty to this country or the people who come out every week to watch their teams.

      Kofi Mensah
The thing is, at 28, he really should be the right balance in physical form and experience thats why he's picked to skipper to carry other young players.

    • @HullMarkCA
      @HullMarkCA 10 лет назад +4

Kofi Mensah Rooney is in his prime. The deal is, he's not happy with thins at United or England. When he was young and not earing 300,000 pound a week he didn't care what was happening around the team, he just wanted to play and play his heart out. if you read is first book all he says is "I just want to play football". That's not the case anymore. now he plays like he has a right to be on the field before he's even kicked a ball and doesnt contribute as much if the team isn't doing well. He, as captain needs to play like the old Rooney every day and lead by example.

Sure, in comparison to other countries England no longer have top world class players throughout the team, we haven't since 2002 in my opinion. And you're right, England need to focus on developing a system and grooming players to play within that system, as we have no consistency. But for that to work correctly the FA need to be more involved at the professional clubs youth systems (like they do in Germany and other nations) that will help us develop a style, system and philosophy but that's a whole discussion in itself. Regardless, players like Rooney needs to step-up and lead by example regardless to what's happening off the field of play, and that's either as an out an out striker or playing as a number 10, he has the ability to do either, he just needs to care about every game and he simply doesn't. Look how cr7 and Messi were talked about when they were coming through the youth system - a potential world class player! So was Rooney, but the difference is Ronaldo still has the desire to show his ability it every game and he thrives off the responsibility and pressure, and Rooney simply doesn't care or doesn't show that he cares to do the same. There’s a famous saying from Sir Richard Branson “Screw it, let’s just do it”, it would be nice to see England players take that approach.

    • @HullMarkCA
      @HullMarkCA 10 лет назад

Kofi Mensah Agreed. A a nation fans, media, FA, clubs we need to support the players properly. There's no need to cusify players after evry game, it's not the end fo teh world when we don't play well or lose a game. We're not the best, so lets get over that and work on being the best England that we can be.

Even though there is a lot of cynicism to England (quite randomly actually), you have to admire the *fact* that all the England players *play* in their home league! (these players see each other all the time in the Prem, they should play better. Thats another story for another time)
