- In this video lesson we will go over some popular sports hobbies in Finnish! ⚽
Point to remember:
"Harrastan ____" doesn't have an exact translation in English, since "harrastan" is being used as a verb here (which is not the case in English). But I felt the best translation is still "my hobby is ___" the meaning is essentially the same so that is why I chose to use that translation. The exact translation for "my hobby is" in Finnish is "minun harrastus on ____" but that I feel is used a lot less commonly (just in my opinion!) So that is why I structured this video as I have :)

I was able to make a Finnish rolled R sound by picturing my mouth as a cave of a specific size and shape, then just relaxing and letting the wind blow though the cave. (Try it and see if it helps.)

Harrastuksenit olivat vesiurheilut, purjehdus, uintia, yleisurheilua, voimistelua, tanssia, pyöräilyä, piirustus, musiikkia.
Mutta nyt harrastukseni on RUclipsa, oppia lisää ja jakaa tietämystäni, ja suuri harrastukseni on aina ollut ruoanlaitto.
Olen harrastanut suomea ja myös koripalloa, kansantanssia (voin tanssia Karjalan-Suomen polkan 😅)

Here where I live there's a game that's a holdover from the old Norman days. You and your opponent take turns to toss little metal balls and see how close you can get them to each other. It's called "Petanque".
Ohhh I think we have that in Finland too and call it "petankki" - must be the same one :o

Both are okay! "koirien kanssa metsässä kävelyä" :) I think in some places they but like a bubble dome on the football field so you are kinda inside too and the snow can't reach inside xD

Technically you could call the sport "pesäpallo" in English as well, since it's very much distinct from what's known as baseball in the anglophone world. I believe Finnish baseball would be more correct, if you want to fully translate it, but both the official website of the sport and English wikipedia article about it use "pesäpallo".

I've seen Finnish baseball. It's more like the old English sport of Bat and Trap than baseball, which was invented in England btw, 😆

One question. Why in the word salibandy the y sounds like i instead of the regular y. I remember seeing one or two words before like that i wondered about it.
I think it's because it would be too hard to pronounce with the regular Finnish y.
