Visitors Take Boats to See Sunken Island in Philippines

- For people in the Philippines experiencing extreme heat, there is one upside to the weather. The hot, dry conditions revealed this centuries-old sunken island. It still has the ruins of an old church that locals say was worth taking a boat trip out to explore the land. The Philippines experiences a dry season about this time of year. Reports say when water levels are normal, all they can see is part of the cross sticking out of the water. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
I'm glad the young fisherman is earning some decent money taking tourists over to and around the island. Good on him for hos initiative.
To those here not know, the ruins was an old town founded around the 17th century and everyone had to relocate to the higher grounds due to the government have to use the place as a water resovoir for the construction of a dam in the 1970. The dam was completed in 1977 and remnants of the old town was submerged underwater.
But every time the water level dropped due to high droughts, the giant cross and the ruins of an old church reemerged. This isn't the first time that it happened. The last time it reemerged was in 2020, exactly like what happened today but the first time it emerged was in 1983, 6 years after the completion of the dam. Nowadays, it is a cultural heritage by the same municipal government of Pantabangan.
The modern town of Pantabangan still exists today and people have used the water reservoir for flood control and the dam being one of the most important things for the town as it provides irrigation and hydroelectric energy.
You can visit it. It is north of Manila and south east of Baguio.
As a filipino, i can certainly agree with your statement (totoo)
This heatwave all over Southeast and South Asia is NOT normal. 45°C is not normal for these countries. At most they usually only get 35 - 37°C.
45°C is Saharan desert weather or Grand Canyon during the peak of summer.
Just like one man said "it's not the heat that gets you, it's the humidity."
Oh wow didn't know that. I am from here and this is my first time to experience this. The heat is really different. I feel for the blue collar workers.
Not normal because i didn't see any Filipino drinking coffee in the middle of the day 😂
@@shredd3r916 you haven't seen people in Starbucks, then.
Try checking out (just a look-see, not actually to enter and buy, because their coffee really isn't for the ordinary wallet) any of their branches.
As a filipino... you get used to it 😅
Wow, that’s the Philippines? It looks like Arizona..
It does look like AZ 😂😂
The Philippines has a desert with sand dunes and semi-arid areas. It's a sharp contrast to the rest of the Philippines.
😂😂😂😂 IT LOOK LIKE THAT BECAUSE IT IS A DAM,
Where I'm from in the Philippines, it hasn't rained a decent amount for three months now. It's really like a desert 😢
@@StickyKeys187because it's summer... Rainy seasons starts June 🙄😒
This is actually one of the biggest signs that the Philippines is vulnerable to climate change. This old town is within the one of the major dams of the country that supplies water to Metro Manila and neighboring provinces. It is called Pantabangan dam.
Resurfacing of the church is not supposed to happen based on the design of the dam and based on the expected water level of the said dam. If this happens, it means the water supply is actually in the critical level.
I think, this should have been covered also, this feature sounded like a good news, but in reality and for most of the people is not.
From earning $2 to $30 a day, not bad at all. That fisherman would make a small fortune by the time the rainy season comes. Enough money to send hus kids to school and maybe pay for a motorbike. There is always opportunity in adversity
I love your positive outlook ❤
Public elementary and high schools in the Philippines is free
@@keurikeuri7851 That's not true. I went to public elementary and high schools, and my parents paid, not the government or any institution.
@@jazz8787 yeah, but public elementary schools only have like 1 thousand tuition fee per school year. I remember my tuition fee being only 500 pesos. And that was 10 years ago. Inflation could have happened, and it still wouldn't cost much.
@@jazz8787 ever since 2017, public schools have been free and some college courses on state colleges as well.
Scorching heat but people in Philippines still having hot coffee during noon. SO ODD LOL
A hot drink in hot weather can actually cool you down.
caffeine addiction is nothing to be proud of.
@@carloregalado7751 And neither is a holier than though attitude.
NOT ME! 😂
coffee is life😂
I see Philippines in the title, I watch!! 🇵🇭
Reminds me of the “El Novillo” dam in Mexico, where you can see the ruins of a church and the housing layout in Batuc, where the water line sometimes recedes for it to be visible.
Beautiful Philippines. ❤
Thank you for this.
I am from the Philippines, my cousin's boyfriend of ten years passed away yesterday morning due to heatsroke. It saddens me that she is alone grieving in Germany working as a nurse while her gentle partner is going to be laid down to rest. This heat is really terrifying and unbearable.
Condolence
my sympathies

As a Filipino, I wanted to thank you show them this presentation that make us Filipinos proud. Mabuha and Mahal ko kayong lahat 🇵🇭💙❤️💛🤍
200 Pecos to be a fisherman is 4 u.s. dollars a day.
That's the reality of many developing poor countries.
Well, the cost of living in the Philippines is not that high compared to the US!
Most fisherman here though earned 500-700 pesos a day or 10-14 dollars. It depends on location.
1000 dollars in the US does not buy much. But in the Philippines, u can buy so many things. I mean a lot of things.
There is a huge difference between the cost living between the 2 countries.
It is expensive to live in the Philippines.
@@roamaroundgisg7362 Is it expensive to live in the Philippines or the US? You have conflicting statements, lol!
That's my hometown! Heat index here was not a joke! It exceeded to more than 40 degrees and people here is struggling and this isn't good to be mentioned there abroad
pretty cool to be able to pray at that church in the dry season I guess most of the aquatic life in the area pray at the underwater church on Sundays🙏😇
Thank You Inside Edition for featuring .Pantabangan,Nueva Escija.Philippine.❤Omfnw Hongkong.😊

The heat index here in PH is around 113F huhuhu
I live in the Philippines; I've never heard of this Sunken Island. I would definitely want to go and explore the place.
You should also visit Baler, Aurora, it takes 2-3 hours from their.
This must be an interesting diving location.
Ooooooooo so excite
i didnt know we had this in the philipines
The translation is on point
This was aired on our local tv station here in the Philippines.
45°C is actually not normal in Southeast Asia....
It is the Pantabangan Lake located at Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija
Religion is deep rooted in PH culture thus some filipino flocks the sunken church. It’s a sight to see but the heat is unbearable these past few days so I suggest you visit earlt.
Specific location: San Marcelino, Zambales Province, Philippines.
i swear bro it reached 48-50 degrees here bro, I swear i almost passed out, you really gotta drink alot of water here I SWEAR
oa ampota😊😊
Philippines mentioned!
i want to go there 👀
Too late rainy season is coming now
It may be hot here in the Philippines but we still drink hot coffee on a hot day.
the location is on the pantabangan, nueva ecija.... this is the old city of pantabangan...
reason for the submerged... irrigation system and dam to make electricity . the area was perfect or the location for the dam to make. so the govement relocate every one to a new location. ang flooded the area.
Dude it’s so hot in here at the Philippines even at night I’ve been sweating just by sitting inside the house
Hi
This only happens during summer, when the level of water is low in the dam.
Pirates treasure 😀😀😀❤
Please change the title to 'Sunken Town". It is not an island, it was a community that was asked to leave. They were relocated and were supported by the government. The relocation area is now a thriving community with a combination of professionals, blue collar and skilled workers.
Visit them too particularly Napon-Napon and Dilakay.
The old Pantabangan town is a sunken island? Really?
❤❤❤
Ya crazy!! Islands sink and rise all day everyday!!
Not an island but a whole town submerged for the creation of the Pantabangan dam.
This summer is going to be a scorcher 🥵🚿
It's really old, isn't it?
They should dig deeper for a water resevoir for when the rain comes
💛💜🔥
45/50 degrees still 😚☕
Real life call of duty

May I suggest? Let non-english speakers speak in their native language if they're comfortable that way, and just put English translation while they're speaking.
This way shows inclusivity and celebrates diversity 😊😊😊
wrong, this is not an island it is a lake converted to dam in 1969.
Im from manila Phils . Its my 1st summer i didnt able to leave our house coz its like you just stepped in a sauna 🥵🥵🥵🥵
For most non-Filipinos, some Filipinos in the Philippines, most or if not all natural scientists, most or if not all geographers, and also in the other national and/or regional English varieties, variants, or dialects outside the Philippines:
It's the Hot Dry Season in the Philippines! (usually from February or March to May or June of the year in the Philippines, being near the equator on the northern hemisphere aka the tropical region or the tropics)
For most Filipinos in the Philippines and also in Philippine English:
It's "Summer" in the Philippines! (usually from February or March to May or June in the "Philippines' own part of the northern hemisphere near the equator and beyond the temperate region of the northern hemisphere") [even though the Philippines doesn't even actually experience Spring, Fall/Autumn, and Winter to also have it's own "Summer"]
Why? Maybe (1) because of weaker public and mass education and information dissemination and access on the Philippines' only two tropical seasons (wet or rainy season and dry season, with the dry season further subdivided into cool dry and hot dry seasons), (2) the phrase "Hot Dry Season" being a mouthful phrase than the word "Summer" to remember, use, say, pronounce and write down, (3) the results, consequences, products, or remains of generally Western and/or European, and/or more especially American public and mass education, and the later mostly or predominantly American-based or American-inspired Philippine or Filipino public and mass education on their 4 temperate seasons versus Philippines' 2 tropical seasons, and Filipinos' confusion between them and among those 4 versus 2 to 3 seasons, intermixing and interchanging few of them, (4) the results, consequences, products, or remains of generally Western and/or European, and/or especially more American influences on Philippine English, Filipino, Tagalog, and the other local and regional languages of the Philippines from the English language of these mostly or predominantly English-speaking or Anglophone countries in or within temperate regions that do have and experience Summer, and also use the word Summer a lot (5) the technicality and formality of the phrase "Hot Dry Season" versus the simplicity of the word "Summer", and/or also (6) the Filipino mentality, behavior, value, character, attitude, or whatnot, of wanting or desiring to have, also to have, or just to say or whatnot else that we have or also have our own or very own Summer season like the countries in the northern and southern temperate regions, just to try hard to belong and fit in to them or their group, get along with some to most of them, make friends with some to most of them, build bonds with some to most of them, and to try hard to have something or even something more in common with them or their group that most to all of them can also connect and relate with us.
At first, I was glad you were bringing in some good points, but I lost it when you started making assumptions.
"upside" to the weather? 💀
Im back
You always come back 🙄
GREAT FOR THE FISHERMAN. you dont know how hard life is in the phillipines, he was earning close to $4.... now $40
Babies teenager students mother father uncle no age limi dying in heatstroke

They could've done the same to Chinese warships ooooo
What's the connection?
Great. Hope they take their trash with them home please.
45 degree Celsius still wearing hoodies.
To protect from the sun... It's easier than holding an umbrella
And drinking hot coffee
actually a hoodie helps to protect the skin from the scorching sun rays (or any long-sleeved cloth)!
God destroy nobody believe in One God..
🇵🇭❤💙💛🤍 THANK YOU INSIDE EDITION
wow...The whole church had collapsed, but the cross is still standing there ✝
It's not 45 degrees but 35-38 degrees celsius. Exaggerating much
They mentioned heat index and not air temperature!
Heat index.
interesting
Kazakhs, Mongols, Manchu, and North Koreans look similar to South Koreans with the same skin colour, so they don't need plastic surgery. Dear Filipinos, love yourselves and stop buying whitening cream!
Likewise to people on the other side of the world who tan their skin. Some even use tanning beds.
Wtf is this guy talking about. South korea is number 1 in plastiv surgery. They apply all kinds of stuff to their skin too
.😅😊😅
CORRECTION INSIDE EDITION,
FIRST, THIS IS NOT AN ISLAND. THE AREA IS THE OLD MUNICIPALITY OF PANTABANGAN.
IT WAS DELIBERATELY SUNKEN BECAUSE THE PHILIPPINES GOVERNMENT CONSTRUCTED THE PANTABANGAN DAM, THE ENTIRE MUNICIPALITY OF OLD PANTABANGAN WAS FLOODED AND THE RESIDENTS WERE RELOCATED.
SO THAT'S NOT A “ SUNKEN ISLAND ” IT WAS THE LOCATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE OLD MUNICIPALITY OF PANTABANGAN.
It was under the water.. So it is sunken island...
it's a sunken island
@@ck-bs2ms A REAL SUNKEN ISLAND, IS AN ISLAND FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF IT'S CREATION, THAT SUNK‼️
AND THAT ENTIRE AREA IS A VAST PLAIN OF AGRICULTURAL MUNICIPALITY BEFORE IT WAS DELIBERATELY SUNKEN BECAUSE OF THE CREATION OF THE PANTABANGAN DAM ‼️
SO HOW CAN YOU SAY, IT IS AN ISLAND WHEN BEFORE THAT PLACE WAS SUNKEN IT WAS A VAST PLAIN OF RICE FIELDS ‼️
CHECK YOUR COMMON SENSE ‼️ BEFORE YOU INSIST YOUR COMMENT.
It's an island now with some of the river water surrounding the area. But factually correct. Before they flooded the place, it was actually land.
