  • After working on our boat for nearly five years we are leaving the US and crossing to Bimini from the Florida Keys. It's 24 hour sail and we're hoping for good weather and easy seas for our first time crossing the Gulf Stream in our electric Sailboat.

    Just to clarify - I am an experienced sailor and grew up in a family business building ocean going yachts. Yachtsmen head for the Med in March (no later than May). The latest charters are the last week in April typically. This is the worst time for even seasoned sailors to be leaving Florida for the Caribbean. Head back and take shelter for the season. Many yachtsman will move north along the eastern seaboard for safer harbor for the season. The anchorages up the coast are safer but you will still need to weather some very strong weather. Please heed these words.

    Is there a setting on your plotter about relative motion versus True Motion representation? There is try changing that and you might be able to switch your little boat icon to show the direction you were pointed versus the direction that you are making good course made good they call it. So in other words it would show your bow heading of the boatVersus the course over ground. I’m not familiar with your plotter but look around on it go sailing

    So...i am neeish to sailing. I have sailed some off florida, but never to Bimini. Why would you not be able to stop in Bimini because of winds and have to keep going? Worst case pull in the back side of the islands, no?

    • @Spoondrifters
      @Spoondrifters  4 месяца назад +1

      If there’s any westerly component to the wind the entrance to Bimini is too rough to enter. Yes you could continue around the backside and wait it out. There’s no way to get to the customs office from that side. But once you get around, it’s just easier to keep going vs backtrack.

      You weren’t in our boat trying to decide what to do if it was broken. That wasn’t fake at all. Last time it was broken it did exactly the same thing. Several conversations were had in those long minutes over Starlink with experienced sailors who had also had the same thing happen and it was broken. So, if you don’t believe, that’s on you, not us.
