@Proton I'm re-doing locusts during the pandemic since I had disassembled it after it got too powerful for our casual play group (which had evolved into a more competitive environment) Muldrotha has acquired a lot of upgrades over time and functions very well. Urza is broken and unfair to play against. Even built with cards on hand, it provides so much advantage once it hits the battlefield that the pilot becomes arch-enemy immediately! I like it better in the 99 unless you are ok with being a target or intend on playing in a more competitive environment. I personally like my commander games janky and laid back.
I drafted this set like 5 times and had terrible, terrible luck until finally... Urza, pack 1, pick 1. Woohoo! So glad to see this video as a starting point. I'm including Counterspell, Urza's Tome, Meteor Golem, Opt, Teferi's Time Twist, Mass Manipulation, and Memorial to Genius. Some of that for the Urza/Teferi flavor. :-D
Buy it in two parts. Buy the 99 cards, save up a few weeks, then buy Uzra [or as mentioned, maybe you'll get lucky and just open it from a booster, or you can trade for it].
I also find that most of these days aren't really 25$... Even this deck, if I remove Urza and optimise for the CHEAPEST option, it'll set me back 47$...
These videos are great, we often do $100 EDH deck builds EXCLUDING the cost of the commander. This makes it so the deck can still be powerful but doesn’t rely on budgeting for various commanders, like this one
The reason why I watch videos like this one, is that some cards are good for some of my other decks or I got educated about some good budget card in that game, for exemple, I didn't knew the existence of Glaring Spotlight and know I will buy it for my Yuriko deck.
That's a great add at the end!! Thank you for adding upgrading at the end of the video it's very helpful for people who are willing to spend a little more money!
Currently building Urza. I got into magic(like in too deep) after Throne of Eldraine. So yeah, I’m NEW NEW. I seriously thought MTG was limited to standard, and what originally stopped me from investing was set rotation. Then, I discovered commander and fell IN LOVE with this game.

I just clicked the link provided in the description, only 3 hrs after the vid released. The deck is already up to $38 (w/o Urza) after TCG optimization. Gosh darn you, Mitch.

Interesting deck tech! I have built this monstrosity and I was surprised how close your build meets mine. Of course, there’s a few differences because I do run Paradox Engine. I commented this in a reply, but an affordable upgrade would be Deadeye Navigator. Runs about $4 and it’s soulbond bounce effect can be so good. In fact, another very inexpensive card for the deck is Whirler Rogue. It enters with 2 thopters, so it more or less is a 4 drop that nets you 2 mana with Urza in play. If Navigator is soulbonded to it, it’s essentially infinite thopters. Plus it can tap artifacts to give a creature unblockable which can close out a game.
the only problem is that your inf thopters have to tap for your cycle continue and so you don't achieve win or something you'll have to get a panharmonicon for get inf mana then inf urza's abilitie so makes it a 4 card combo when you can find dramatic scepter or engine i think navigator took the place of your brainstorm or ponder siblings
nathan wathelet(corbeau) true, it doesn’t mean gg at that point. You usually need something else, maybe like the constructs Urza creates, which you can then tap 2 with Rogue to kill someone. As of late, I add Altar of the Brood: everyone mills out.
This is an absolutely fantastic deck and no better way to build Urza if you want to win. In fact, I love seeing every single one of the Commander's Quarters videos. This is some channel ya got here, Mitch! 👍
HELL YEA! Thank you for doing this! I was gonna build a cEDH version of him but I dont have the budget or the meta to withstand a competitive deck. This fixes both of my issues!
btw Cold Storage is my go to for protecting my creatures in the Urza deck, Even if my artifacts become 5/5 with Antiquities War I can just save my creatures and just sacrifice Cold Storage and get everything back even with ETB effects. I feel its more flexible than Synod Sanctum but at the same time I got Cold Storage from a trade and fell in love with the card after how many times it protected Raff in my Raff Voltron deck I built.
You may want to change the few cards that manipulate the top of your deck since Urza's last ability makes you shuffle your deck before you get to play the top card
Having played against a couple different Urzas thus far, I'm convinced the deck can not be built in a non-oppressive way and is inherently broken (Urza himself is broken). You can play it out but, you lost the moment Urza drew his opening hand. If you're not into or play cEDH, the smartest thing to do is not play. The only fun to be had is by the person playing Urza and the deck is no longer welcome in any game I play. The rules committee needs to ban him.
I’ve got an Urza deck, proxies for now, that has big artifact creatures in it and I’d probably swap some of them for eldrazi at some point, though probably not the titans. It doesn’t have anything oppressive in it, which is my style. My deck needed some more card draw though, but it was nice to be able to sink mana into his activated ability. It was odd to get a Counterspell one time with his ability. Couldn’t do anything with it at the time. I think it’s worth noting that you can’t cast a creature with his ability if it isn’t one of your main phases. It was definitely a fun deck though. Entirely possible to not make it broken.
@@andrewlaverghetta715 That may be possible but one like that hasn't shown up at my LGS yet. Urza player yesterday kept a 0 land hand and was in total control around turn 3 and giddy as a schoolgirl, the rest of us were miserable. Haven't seen many creatures in Urza, mainly just artifacts, card draw, counters and the odd planeswalker.
Great work as always. Personally I think I'll stick with my stax/control and combo build for Urza, though. It is incredibly expensive compared to this... But a card like Urza deserves the investment for me.
What makes Urza so good is his versatility. A cool build for Urza, even though it will be more expensive is a token deck that relies on beating opponents with giant construct tokens.
Since we're gonna draw a ton of cards, would it be worth having Spellbook in the deck? Not only is it a 0 cost artifact and can get a trigger off most of our things, but we don't have to discard for essentially holding almost all the cards in our deck. Oh and Laboratory Maniac. We draw everything, cast him, GG.
I'm a year late, but I just busted this guy out of a booster. Most of the cards in this deck were already included in the Saheeli commander deck, so I basically just modded it with whatever junk I already had kickin around. For reasonable upgrades, I fully recommend a Conjurer's Closet and Pentavus. Separately, they're pretty amazing in this deck, but together, they're just the gift that keeps on giving. Once they're in play together, you basically get 4 free flying mana rocks every turn. The closet can also be used to flicker Urza himself for free construct tokens every turn, or to cash in on whatever other ETB creatures you have in play.
Mirrodin Besieged is such a great card in this deck. In the deck that I built for Urza I included a Ghostly Flicker loop to get more of the Urza Golem tokens into play.
the guys at the command zone podcast were talking about how maybe there is no way to make a casual urza deck. this list is proof. I don't see how this doesn't trample over every other deck in this channel
gemstone array or iceberg could be budget friendly as a storage; incase you could use a bit extra mana later. blue sun's zenith could also be a finisher spell by decking opponents.
I was thinking about doing an Urza deck with counters and proliferate, because there are a ton of really good mana rocks that you can drop with charge counters and if you're storming off with something like Flux Channeler in play you're going to have a good time, especially if you can also manage a decent number of walkers. Narset, Parter of Veils to stop draw engines (maybe a Puzzlebox to make everyone at the table rage quit), Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor to make it harder to remove Urza. Toss in Magistrate's Scepter for extra turns; now that's a truly underrated card in the format. Seems slow at 4,T for a counter, but if you've got a storm combo going off it's honestly not that hard to get it untapped and pour extra counters on it if for no other reason than to run something like The Antiquities War. Storm out 60% of your deck plus extra tokens then take an extra turn with Magistrate's Scepter, Overload your Cyclonic Rift, pass the turn to yourself, toss more counters on the Scepter just in case someone has an answer, load up your Saga with enough counters to make it go off, swing with a ton of 5/5's, leave mana open to counter any shenanigans, gg. I ended up pulling an Urza and now people know I have it and I keep getting bothered by people over it because they want to trade for it. But I want to sit on it for a while to see where the price goes.
If I understood that right, when you use Urzas last ability to play a card without its mana costs, you basically cast your spells. I am not sure about rhe ruling there. Some say playing is not casting and others say it is.
It's casting it. It still follows all the rules of when you can cast. 6/14/2019 Urza’s last ability doesn’t change when you can play the exiled card. For example, if you exile a sorcery card, you can cast it only during your main phase when the stack is empty. If you exile a land card, you can play it only during your main phase and only if you have an available land play remaining. 6/14/2019 If a spell has Variable Colorless in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost. 6/14/2019 If you cast a card “without paying its mana cost,” you can’t choose to cast it for any alternative costs. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs (such as that of Lesser Masticore), you must pay those to cast the card.
This is the first time I've ever purchased a deck of yours before watching the video, but I got lucky with an Urza pull so I wanted to get on board before prices spike.
I just priced this list, very excited about funding a great mid teir powered Urza deck that would fit into my play group on, priced on TCG with 94 items from one seller so you dont have to worry about shipping being out of control. The cheapest price i could get this deck to is $68 without Urza.
It's about $80-90 now with Urza.. and the upgraded one is up near $150. Prices fluctuate... normally upwards. Still MUCH cheaper than a lot of Urza decks. All the prices are from the day he recorded so they won't always be the same when we get around to the video.
I pulled an Urza earlier today and have been searching for deck building tips. This one seems great, especially for the price. The only issue I have is… how does the deck win? It makes sense to be able to storm off repeatedly, bounce artifacts, etc, but what does all of that actually accomplish?
Storage Matrx says 'Yeah, i might not have a lot of money, but i will still stax the hell out of you all'. LMAO. Wow. You're the only channel that managed to not do a stupidly powerful deck XD even then, it is really cool. Wow.
Missed out of a few fun cards. Broodstar can be a flying threat. Confirm suspicion is like a mini spell swindle countering and giving 3 artifacts. Mechanized production is a win con with things already in the deck. But most of all this deck MUST have Mishra's Self-Replicator easily a contender for superior to Mirrodin Beseiged. Doubling your replicators is far stronger than bringing a single thopter onto the field with the only downside of paying a mana each which you can do because they are mana rocks and pay for themselves and then you have stupid numbers of artifacts the next turn. Also many of your decks but especially especially this one should include Emergence Zone. It is only a few cents and can enable flash speed artifacts for a turn which can be huge either with mechanized production or tons of other things it is just strong. Reasonable upgrades could include something like shimmer myr for a more permanent style one. Thanks for the great video.
I need to try to make an artifact storm deck and play it against people. I proxied Jhoira and played it 1v1. It was fun and I won, but I'm not sure how it'd go against a group of 3 others. I also bought the Jhoira deck on MTGO and goldfished it to great effect. I just don't know if actually storming off with artifacts against 3 other people would be very enjoyable since it can't necessarily be done fast. I did proxy my own Urza deck, I would place it at a 5-6 out of 10 if 10 is extremely competitive. It played out well and it would have done well, but the other two players had similarly powerful decks, if not a little higher. My deck centered around 8 or so decently powerful artifact creatures and 26 artifacts, 24 of which costing 2 or less. The only other two were Unwinding Clock which I had from Saheeli, and Aetherflux Reservoir which I had from a Melek/Mizzix deck. 10 of those artifacts cost 0 mana without any additional discounts but did things that were reasonable and not just hunks of metal without Urza on the battlefield. I also ran 7 counters. Building with a lot of what I already had, the deck came out to $266 including the commander. So that's not really budget, but there are obvious exclusions that could be made since I do have Karn, Scion of Urza, Sapphire Medallion, Thought Vessel, Mox Amber etc.
Thoughts in a deck based on returning urza to your hand - to replay ursa for more artifacts and that one guy who can pay 1U to blink urza Edit: 'that one guy' is deadeye navigator Edit two: Watched whole deck - deadeye navigator + Genises chamber + Urza = As many (As many*2/As many*2) artifact creatures as you want with as many 1/1 myrs as you want because urza is not an artifact creature and the As many (as many*2/As many*2) can tap for blue thanks to urza coming back into play allowing you to create as many (as many*2/as many*2) artifact creatures as you want - just keep in mind all but 1 of your (as many*2/as many*2) and 1/1 myrs will be tapped... but you have an army of let's say 500 1000/1000 creatures and 500 1/1 myrs anything short of a boardwipe and you just win game
I am tempted to make him my Mono-blue deck. I pulled him from a box and he hasn't seen much action in my Saheeli deck. Thanks for giving me a good starting point!
I know this is a budget channel and i do play in a small budget league but cedh is what i play often . Theres alot of busted shit. Granted chances of turn 1 are very slim occasional turn 2 and 3s will occur more often than you think. I used to feel the same about teferi CV when i constructed it, atleast at my piloting skills its consistantly turn 4
after doing some playtesting I can not recomend game plan over karn's temperal sundering enough... sundering gives you a bonus card and untap yes - but if you are petering out which can hapen and you need a good kick to restart your engine game plan/commit into memory are not only good defence against mil they let you throw your whole deck into play...
Deck needs panharmonicon and paradox engine. Draw lots of cards on etb play more artifacts with artifacts. Then add something to infinite flicker urza id say for infinite big artifacts which of course also equates to infinite mana
Sounds degenerate. May be good or bad depending upon your playgroup, lol! I think the channel had a question posted a few days ago about if there should be infinite combos in the decks/budget decks or something like that. I don't think they're bad unless it's a rare thing and not something that happens every game. If you stick 5 tutors for the win con in your deck and just go for it each time, that's no fun to play(against).
Man i wish this got released 1 week ago because i just got a sharuum the hegemon commander deck and when i was building it i was running into blanks. It was kinda funny though that a lot of what i put in it was i this episode
Is this the most powerful $25 budget deck you've built for the channel? For a long time I think it was Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, but this is just absurd.
I actually still think it might be Jhoira. That deck has a lot of cards that are now well out of budget, and Jhoira’s draw engine is probably more powerful and consistent than Urzas shuffle
i would love to see u do a mogis god of slaughter deck, something to spice up games with some "this card hurts all but me slightly less" kindoff vibe to it, not sure if thats really focussed but surely fun, anyways, keep up the good work!
My playgroup already lowkey hates me, especially when I play storm. I'm making a more casual aggro deck that copies his constructs and makes lots of thopters and other artifact creatures. It kinda plays like elves, in a way. My favorite card to use is Sharding Sphinx, as it doubles my thopters every turn.
Dont forget mishras self replicators they double themselves several times a turn. Masterful replication as a fun finisher with like a hundred steel hellkites
Surprisingly, you did not put the Pili Pala x Grand Arbiter combo in this deck. I put the Kaladesh Modules with Grand Arbiter as a backup combo in case Pili Pala got killed. Nice deck btw.
Some people have chains I have a modern EDH competitive Urza deck and an Asimov AK who's really stuntin people. Mr gold chains and fur coat or YA BOI!!!
I feel like your voice and mannerism would be very good for a podcast. Obviously it’s hard to get people to listen, especially since mtg podcasts are kinda oversaturated, but maybe when you get the large following you deserve, you should give it a shot
I think it might be time to just throw in the towel and make all the episodes ‘Commander excluded’ - can’t even remember the last time the Commander was actually included in the budget.
He did a quick look deck tech awhile back and if you watch Game Knights their latest episode has a guy running Ayula. It was clearly the weakest deck at the table but he looked like he was having a lot of fun lol
Okay but here's a good question. What is the better card as a commander, urza or jhoira? I have a jhoira deck that I have been considering changing to an urza deck but I feel like there may be enough tap cards in the 99 for jhoira to still be a better commander. It probably take me 10 bucks to change my jhoira to a urza deck.
So I'm fairly new to commander and have an urza and really want to build around him. What I don't understand is what exactly is the win con in your deck?
First of all, I have enjoyed your videoes and is a lot of inspiration to build on a budget and to find underused/played cards. Keep up the good work. However, I'm a bit puzzled you didn't include Brain Freeze. You talk a lot about storming however only uses one card with the storm mechanic. Brain Freeze seems good in this deck and the TCG market price is 1.24 so it is not out of the window in a budget deck. You can either mill your opponent or mill your self to have Mirrodin Besieged kill an opponent. It cost 1.24 It seems weird to have deck focused so much on storm and only one card with the storm.
Urza costs more than the deck itself lol
Proxy him. As long as your playgroup is okay with proxies.

I can't wait to see the break the bank on this episode. All the shenanigans you could do with artifacts.
Indeed!
Mirrodin Besieged is such a great card in this deck. In the deck that I built for Urza I included a Ghostly Flicker loop to get more of the Urza Golem tokens into play.
Before watching I'm already guessing this is more then a focused deck, it's Urza it's basically an optimized deck just cause of him 😂
Winter Orb... not just winter for the battlefield, because everyone will show you his/her cold shoulder too xD
I was able to swing in for 2000+ damage in one combat because of The Antiquitues War
the guys at the command zone podcast were talking about how maybe there is no way to make a casual urza deck. this list is proof. I don't see how this doesn't trample over every other deck in this channel
Would love seeing you do an Eight and a half tails deck at some point
gemstone array or iceberg could be budget friendly as a storage; incase you could use a bit extra mana later. blue sun's zenith could also be a finisher spell by decking opponents.
Thank Gaea! I thought there would never be an Urza deck that costs less than a new car!
pili-pala is a budget artifact that combos with heartstone and urza for infinite mana
This is the first time I've ever purchased a deck of yours before watching the video, but I got lucky with an Urza pull so I wanted to get on board before prices spike.
Bought a box and the very first pack had a foil urza. I need to make this now
it's a sign
I just priced this list, very excited about funding a great mid teir powered Urza deck that would fit into my play group on, priced on TCG with 94 items from one seller so you dont have to worry about shipping being out of control. The cheapest price i could get this deck to is $68 without Urza.
It's about $80-90 now with Urza.. and the upgraded one is up near $150. Prices fluctuate... normally upwards. Still MUCH cheaper than a lot of Urza decks. All the prices are from the day he recorded so they won't always be the same when we get around to the video.
I don't normally play blue so the way I'm making my Urza is kind of big artifact creatures with control to keep them around
Isochron Scepter together with Dramatic Reversal is amazing in an Urza deck, and then you can include Lab Maniac and Blue Suns Zenith to win
Yeah also the New jace from WAR
Box-o-roxen.
Also, good deck tech, liked the upgrades, as well.
With all that mana...
Did anyone think of throwing in Stasis (
I would LOVE your take on an upgraded Urza deck I can already see the crazy control potential
Wow.
Haha well thanks!
This deck has major potential to be very nasty with the reasonable upgrades put in it absolutely going to build this deck for sure
Just bought this badass a couple days ago. Here goes building another deck to piss off my friends
Training ground and any of karns are good upgrades
So that's not really budget, but there are obvious exclusions that could be made since I do have Karn, Scion of Urza, Sapphire Medallion, Thought Vessel, Mox Amber etc.
go on your scepter that's not real storm but count as storm
So, pashalik Mons is an interesting card, as it acts like Omnath, Locus Rage, but is way faster and cheaper. So a deck on him would be sick.
Hey Commander's quarters, I've got some video ideas for you:
· Precon Upgrades
· Oathbreaker and Brawl Budget Decks
Thoughts in a deck based on returning urza to your hand - to replay ursa for more artifacts and that one guy who can pay 1U to blink urza
Edit: 'that one guy' is deadeye navigator
Edit two: Watched whole deck - deadeye navigator + Genises chamber + Urza = As many (As many*2/As many*2) artifact creatures as you want with as many 1/1 myrs as you want because urza is not an artifact creature and the As many (as many*2/As many*2) can tap for blue thanks to urza coming back into play allowing you to create as many (as many*2/as many*2) artifact creatures as you want - just keep in mind all but 1 of your (as many*2/as many*2) and 1/1 myrs will be tapped... but you have an army of let's say 500 1000/1000 creatures and 500 1/1 myrs anything short of a boardwipe and you just win game
I am tempted to make him my Mono-blue deck. I pulled him from a box and he hasn't seen much action in my Saheeli deck. Thanks for giving me a good starting point!
Urza is busted already have achieved turn 1 2 3 &4 wins
Be that as it may, I am not all too competitive and I like him better than Talrand.
@@DVS57REBEL Turn 1-2 wins aren't possible with Urza
@@L00rdAjduk tell that to my opponents
I ive already done in at tournament and my turn 1 involved workshop and a god hand of 5 other cards
Daaaaaaaamn, what an OP deck
Might just build this as a gateway into the cEDH build that I’m working on
after doing some playtesting I can not recomend game plan over karn's temperal sundering enough... sundering gives you a bonus card and untap yes - but if you are petering out which can hapen and you need a good kick to restart your engine game plan/commit into memory are not only good defence against mil they let you throw your whole deck into play...
Lands! In mono color when you dont have any special basic Land synergy throw in utility Lands.
keep it budget
Thank you so much you did it !!!
Deck doesn't need panharmonicon at all. You only need paradox engine to go infinite.
I've got an unopened box of horizons and just hoping I might pull him lol if I do then I'm making a deck like this! Wish me luck haha 😅
Luck is wished!!!
i would love to see u do a mogis god of slaughter deck, something to spice up games with some "this card hurts all but me slightly less" kindoff vibe to it, not sure if thats really focussed but surely fun, anyways, keep up the good work!
I suggest a super budget Tromokratis deck if you haven't already
No Inventor's Fair in the reasonable upgrades section? Any particular reason? Seems like it'd be a perfect fit.
Please do Hogaak/Ayula tech! I packed both and your videos are of such high quality
I'm definetly building this deck
Something you also may want in the deck is isochron scepter
Paradoxical Engine
@@khariperkins4243 yes and that but paradox engine in 40 dollars.
@@hive_mind5869 PFFFFTT That's why you sell drugs and pimp bro.
Some people have chains I have a modern EDH competitive Urza deck and an Asimov AK who's really stuntin people. Mr gold chains and fur coat or YA BOI!!!
Looks like we found a Wayfarer's Bauble replacement.
I feel like your voice and mannerism would be very good for a podcast. Obviously it’s hard to get people to listen, especially since mtg podcasts are kinda oversaturated, but maybe when you get the large following you deserve, you should give it a shot
Even excluding the cost of the commander this deck cost over $100 from the deck list links
Paradox engine, training grounds, capsize, or blue suns zenith
I think it might be time to just throw in the towel and make all the episodes ‘Commander excluded’ - can’t even remember the last time the Commander was actually included in the budget.
Please make Ayula EDH guide.
Please.
He did a quick look deck tech awhile back and if you watch Game Knights their latest episode has a guy running Ayula. It was clearly the weakest deck at the table but he looked like he was having a lot of fun lol
@@jonathancummins6234 I know but I'd like a full budget guide and CQ always has the best ones.
Full budget ayula is just lots of bears and some overrun effects
no darksteel relic or welding jar? Have to play as many Mox as possible!
EXCUSE ME ?! Mirrodin Besiege is ONLY 0.95 $ ??!!
Probably a damaged variant.
Yeah.
So I'm fairly new to commander and have an urza and really want to build around him. What I don't understand is what exactly is the win con in your deck?
Aetherflux is quite the NUKE in some decks... have it in an ajani/soul sisters deck
I just ordered most of the cards from this deck minus the Urza and it came out to $125
I was perfectly content using the Urza I pulled as a fun piece in my Jhoira deck until I saw this video...
