- I test drive both the Vermeer S450 and the Toro Dingo TX427 and decide which is the best machine for my high school mill. I try three separate attachments: forks, brush grapple, and the log grapple. The results may surprise you. Some of my favorite tools: www.amazon.com/shop/colfaxmath
I took wood working in high school and our program was nothing like yours. I hope those kids know how good they have it. I applaud you for your dedication to the students. Your 110% dedicated to that program/students.
Thank you, nice to hear
I can tell your one of those teachers that your students will look back from time to time and wish they can be back in your class learning . Thank you for all your efforts with your students we need more teachers like you
Very kind words, thank you
I run a s800tx and that machine is fantastic. Just a beast.
You need to compare operating capacity machines. What is the 50 percent tip rating on each machine? I have the toro dingo 323. It is an awesome machine! I have my own tree service and I get calls often from other are companies that don't have a mini skid and haul the logs out for there jobs. You should have put the vermeer grapple on the dingo.
You compare different sized stems with different designed attachments to judge differences between machines?
Man, the only thing I had in wood working in high school was... a bandsaw, table saw and a lathe.
We are very fortunate to have so many cool tools
@@topsaw do you know if the mini skid steer would fit through a 1 door fence?
@@smallnuts2 I think designrtto fit through a 36 inch gate with narrow tracks
Hey I run a large tree service in Florida we throw away a lot of huge oak slabs I would like to start saving them but I haven't found a sure fire way of drying them without them splitting so badd because there's so much water in the oak trees here, do you have any suggestions? Thanks
The oak really twists, we mill it wet, strap it to dry it and then use the CNC to plane it. People love the slabs though
I have a Vermeer 650. All other landscapers gave me crap and laughed. But after I showed what it could do. 3 of them bought mini’s
I'm looking to get one is there a best size machine for augering and also lifting skids etc.
Avant with Dave norgaurd grapple best set up👍
Yeah and whats the price difference
Colfax... are you literally right down the street from me? LOL I think that grapple would be good on the TX 1000 its a diesel dingo 1000lbs that lifts 2500lbs. Step off!? Are they crazy!?
Ive owned both these machines and there is no comparison. The Vermer is far superior. Track retention, reliability and capabilty, it is streets ahead of the Toro. We were constantly replacing parts on the Toro until it had a catastrophic failure very early in its life. Years later the vermeer is still working every day
Wow, great review. I still have the Vermeer with no problems
We don't use the gas-powered Toros, only the diesel ones (525 and 1000). Due to the nature of my work, the Toros break down, but this is due more to the work conditions (which are extreme) as well as the duration of their usage (which is daily, 7 days a week).
Ya anything will break down if used 365 days a year
He didn’t compare the tx1000 so it’s not fair because he used the smaller dingo
Fair enough
I have had the tx1000 since it came out. There is not a better one on the market. Lots of complaints on Arb forums of Vermeer breaking down. Toro Dingo tx1000 diesel narrow is the state of the art imo.
I'm sure you know this but those to minis are not in the same ball park . that is an old dingo and the vermeer is newer and larger. I use both brands weekly vermeer is a way better machine hands down. I have owned one for years.
Try a Toro TX1000, much more capacity and capability than what Vermeer offers, and a much higher lift capacity for jobs where you have to load over the sideboard of a truck. Vermeer hasn’t made anything yet, to my knowledge, that can load higher than a standard pickup truck.
Tried one recently and really liked it
I’m 14 and use minis skids, I think you should defiantly teach all the kids how to use the machines as long as they are mature
It is a very valuable skill and transferable to so many jobs
What size truck do u need to haul a mini skid? What’s the price range on mini skids. I say the best is Vermeer is that cuz of price. Why’s their cost
Certainly need a 3/4 ton truck at the least to pull it. I like Vermeer because they are reliable, I have had a lot of their equipment and always liked it. Price of mini skid steers all over from 25k to 75k
Most new half ton trucks will handle the weight and trailer needed for any mini skid.
You could of lift the cedar log with fork attachment picking up in middle of log
They're not trying to move logs with forks ...
I have seen it lift the log when operated by someone who has experience with it.
I believe that, when I made this video I had zero experience on these machines
Morbark also make a mini skid , with different attachments
Boxers
Lol, toro dingo log was a lot bigger than the log used for the vermeer. Not even comparable. Would've been nice to see the vermeer try to pick up the same log the dingo had
True
How much is the Vermeer?
Not sure where the price is now, best to check with your local dealer
Ctx100 dude with a diesel 40hp. Never look back dude. I wouldn't have a gas powered engine on any.piece of equipment like that.
It is a dead man pad is what it is called if you fall off the machine will stop.
So I know this video is 3 years old, but it appears you are still responding. I did watch the entire video, and read most comments before deciding to respond. I sell mini skids and attachments. If you prefer the Vermeer, awesome. You pointed out a couple very good reasons to prefer it.
First off this comparison is apples and oranges. The Toro machine is actually rated 35# heavier operating weight. Using a grapple with a 3' longer reach nullified that fact. Yes, I heard you mention that.
It would have made a lot more sense to see both machines use exact same attachment, lifting exact same log to evaluate. I saw your note that you did lift cedar log with Vermeer.
I'm embarrassed for your Vermeer rep. He either doesn't know his equipment or he was showing off at the risk of injuring someone. A 24" diameter 8' oak log is exceeding the capacity of either of those machines with that much extension.
Off my soap box now 😉
Great input and I agree with what you are saying. I am no expert just a first time buyer of a mini skid steer. Three years later, I will say the Vermeer has served us well with zero breakage. It is perfect for that flat parking lot but if we're to buy another one, I would go bigger and wider. Thank you
I see the vermeer pick up the small piece compare to toro ,, I see toro they pick up a super big piece
Different class machines vermeer has a safer work platform
Dude you are picking up logs meant for a a bigger machine
Yes indeed
Toro hydraulics are superior quality. 4 pumps allow simultaneous functions. Toro is a more profitable machine. Narrower over-all and simple ground drive controls. Vermeers break down shortly after the warranty is up. Vermeer has good servicing dealer support cause your going to need it.
good info to have
we had nothing but problems with the toro hydraulics. we had them in the shop more than they worked. the tracks lasted very little time as well. we had the tx1000. we traded them in for the vermeer ctx100 nothing but satisfaction with the vermeer machines.
@@timothysnow9006 Toro had bugs to work out on the early Tx 1000. I demoed that machine and did'nt like it. I have the Tx27 narrow and cost me $8500 used with 300 hours.
@@renegade1926 My comments are my opinion based on personal experiance and observations. Vermeer products have a propensity to self destruct and are way over priced, especially their brush chipper line. No manufacturer is perfect, they all have bugs and engineering revisions.
@@almangrant7358 ik ppl with vermeer chippers and never have issues. If anything maybe a sensor thats a bout it.
Why didn’t u use the same grapple and Same log, wtf
The grapples are not interchangeable
I run the vermeer everyday 925 and the ctx100. i can pick your nose with em lol . o good video but you should clear ur throat
Not the same log toros log is much longer if you ou are going to compare use the same grapple and same log
Ok
Try an avant loader you will never run a mini skid again
I've seen them and would love try one out, they look very clever.
Waste of money. Spend a little more and get a real skidsteer. These baby things can’t cut the mustard for most jobs. They’re always being pushed to the limits. It’s like using a ford ranger to do a 3/4 tons job.
Fair enough. I had a 7k pound mini excavator and thing could do real work. Only problem was I couldn't ever get it into anybody's yard or if I drove it on the lawn it destroyed the lawn. There probably is a happy medium.
A ctx100 can do a lot of work. Especially in tight spaces. Vermeer is rolling out a ctx130 soonish, and that puppy can really do some work.
You can't roll those heavy skid steers over any thing
Says the guy who's never actually used one and is judging by looks alone. I agree on the little toro, too small and weak to do a lot of jobs. The diesel powered Vermeer will dig dirt and move materials all while fitting through a standard fence gate, which is what they're designed to do. I just used a Ditch Witch to excavate for a concrete slab and it dug through hard dry clay no problem and carried it out through the gate that wouldn't have allowed a bigger machine. Then I used it to move 8 tons of 3/4 down base material back in through the gate and spread it. I've used the ctx 100 to build retaining walls and dig dirt and it's equally as capable. You also don't have to climb in and out when you need to get off the machine to shovel or check your grade, you just step off and hit the ground running.
@Tree Man zip tie some foam pipe insulation up there.
The dingo can only lift 1000lbs.
Yes
Operator error on the Toro you don't pick up a log that way...it should never be a lever like the way you tried to pick it up...pick it up so the log makes a T with the machine...log on top!! Don't bad mouth the Toro, they do it much better and safer!!
I wasn't bad mouthing the Toro at all, The Vermeer was just a better fit for my high school program with the grant funds I had.
