Shut it karen
Jeff Hardy Why exactly?
I work at petco and let me tell you in the 5 months I’ve worked there not a single glo betta has been sold but hundreds of regular bettas have been
You are rude Jeff Hardy shut up they take good care of there fish. You probably don't
You guys are rude
As an employee at Petsmart, I can tell you the glow bettas are not doing good and most likely will be discontinued. No one is buying them, not even at my surrounding stores.
I has literally never heard of them before this video, and i am actively researching everything about bettas so i think part of it may be that they had 0 ads for them unlike with the original glowfish
You people are nuts!!! They cost $30 each! That’s why!!! They are amazing fish!!!
They look ok under the lights but they always look really sickly under normal light even when they are healthy. I would rather get an opal or pearlescent colored betta that looks amazing in any light condition.
From me personally owing a glow betta she got really lively once she got comfortable in her new tank and also about 2-3 weeks after feeding her she grew to the size of a female betta I think they have a bad reputation and just need a good tank, some good food , and love 🐠 💕
@Kelvynn Lee bettas are already really beautiful on their own. No need glo bettas.
This was a nice idea for a video, the white betta is absolutely gorgeous. I am not a fan of glow fish either, but only because I worry people will see the fish more as a toy/decoration because of the novelty.
Thank you. I think its important to have alternatives. Not everyone is a fan but like glow, so I thought this would be a good way to compromise.
@@rootsnwhiskers8351 I went to PetSmart today to get my first betta after doing a lot of research from your videos. The only bettas they had in-stock were the glo-fish, and they told me they wouldn't be restocking bettas until after the Cornavirus. I went with one of the glo-fish because I was ready to finally get a little guy for my 10g tank. Is there a particular reason you do not like glo-fish, and why I should avoid them in the future. I definitely would have preferred a more vibrant multicolored betta but this was the best I could do given the circumstance.
Potato one reason is that they are artificial which can cause deformities and other problems
normal domestic bettas have a whole whole host of genetic deformities due to inbreeding, globettas are no different.
Your fear is justified. I went to petco the other day to get stuff for my rabbit and I was checking out the fish to see if they had any glass catfish in stock so I can plan out my tank in the future and a woman and her daughter came by lookijg at the glo fish and, they brought the dead previous fish with them in a bag- and the guy asked "which ones do you want this week?"
WHAT
I had to refrain from getting angry so hard-
Glow bettas still deserve a chance at living in a good home though, it doesn’t matter whether or not they glow, they’re still living.
I agree. I got one female glow betta at the beginning of the year, and she’s doing fine with my other female bettas.
Ikr just because they glow doesn't mean they don't deserve a chance at living in a good environment like any other betta
Ya
May I ask b I don't quite understand, what is the problem with glow fish and betta?
@@Monica_bondevik, their genes are altered so they can be glow betta fish, it can be classified as cruelty to animals because there’s no need to do that, but in my personal opinion, they also deserve to live. It’s not like they wanted to be altered or something. My female glow betta has been doing good, she is pretty active and lovely, I really enjoy having her. I got her at the beginning of the year and she’s still doing fine.
you made the glow decorations look good considering how tacky they are
I agree about them being tacky lol
She made a "classy" glo tank!!😂♥️♥️♥️♥️
Hi Lisa
I am an adult with a full 10 gallon glotank and I love the bright colors 🥰 tacky is harsh for no reason it’s just not your style. I find natural tanks to be boring!
@@Rachel-ow6ij Exactly! 👏 Well said.
You can see the look of awe in the betta's eyes. He probably never has had this much space to himself, with so many colours!
Thank you! He seems to be adjusting well 🙂
Hannan Irina: Funny that you said that. Last Fall I saved 2 sweet bettas from those little petsmart cups. I have them in a 15G with a black divider. One of them was scared at first - he wasn’t used to so much room with substrate, live plants, driftwood, and warm water. He freaked out and hid for about 15 minutes. But once he ventured out, he started swimming all over, through the plants, and by the next day both were building bubble nests - that’s how happy they were. I have a 20G long that I’m setting up with 2 dividers so I can have 3 more. I’m switching from gravel to sand - I like the look better - ironically, I bought some blue glow stones and the new Fluval LED lights with settings for sunrise, etc. which has a blue light. All I need are the fish - and one will definitely be white!
Lisa KGTropicals My fish is happy in his 5 gallons
@@rootsnwhiskers8351 OMG HI R U LISA
My betta is named Poseidon and he is a pretty boy. When I go near his 15 gallon tank he flares at me and tries to show off, and impress me. Love the little guy.😊
xXFroggy_PlaysXx he flares to impress their owner... bettas can recognize their owners face.
My fish is new and he does the same thing
xXFroggy_PlaysXx fish can recognize there owner, it would be different if it was a wild betta
Mine is Rhubarb Pie and is a sweet boi!

What's funny is I work as an aquatic specialist at a petco and I put dalmation mollies, blind cave tets, albino tiger barbs etc in with the glofish to show the fact that if you like the glow esthetic, you don't need to buy glofish -- you just need a blue light. And the first thing I did when we got our globetta display was pull white opals and butterflies that had the white splotches and put them under the blue light and omgwow they glow! I recommend this channel's videos to my custys all the time. Keep posting please I love it
brooke walton aquatic specialist lol yea you can put these 7 oscars in a 5 gallon trust me I’m a specialist you’d better add a few common plecos too
JD Farmer the specialists at my Petco do ask what size tank the fish goes into, and won’t sell the fish if it goes into a small tank.
@@butkusfan23 ✋ Yep. I ask every costumer what size tank we're working with and if it's not correct for the fish I refuse the sale. And I work at PetSmart.
People come in wanting to put bala sharks into a 55 gallon tank and koi fish in a 10 gallon. Or put guppies and cory cats into a 2 gallon tank for a betta when it's already not the correct size for the betta alone. All that stuff just happened this week. And some days it's emotionally hard and exhausting because people don't care and just yell at you for doing the right thing.
So, there are some people who work in these company stores that know what they're doing and care very much. We're out there.
@@rachelb1080 thanks! Good to know.
I'm also an aquatics specialist for Petco. It's only been three months but I'm learning alot. Tank maintenance tomorrow. Ha ha. I just put a betta edge light in my room and I'm loving it. I have an empty 29 gallon in my room because I need a proper stand for it and basically HAD to get this really pretty platinum dragon male. I'll probably just keep building tanks in my room until I start my 29 gallon. I don't regret buying either though.
As a kid I wanted Glofish, but now as an adult I don't see a point, when there are so many fish that are naturally beautiful colors.
I agree. I prefer the natural ones but unfortunately not even the non-gmo bettas at big box stores are natural.
@@rootsnwhiskers8351 I honestly feel the same way about Bettas as I do Glofish. I don't think I'll ever purchase a domestic Betta, knowing how physically and genetically messed up they are, especially the long fin varieties. I'd much rather purchase a captive bred wild-type Betta from a reputable breeder, such as Frank'sBettas. No disrespect to anyone that purchases domestic Bettas, it's just my own personal choice.
You have a valid point. I have some domestic bettas of my own. I do what I can to provide them a happy home. It's sad that they've come as far as they have with bettas. But I draw the line at personally owning a glo betta. No hate to people that do.
Lisa KGTropicals exactly!
The thing about glofish is that they weren't originally made to sell to kids. They were made to see if we can insert genes into an animals DNA. They picked glowing because its a quick and easy to spot modification.
The studies that gave us glofish are just the first step in the process of putting an end to genetic defects and also seeing if we can replace genes that leade to higher chances of disease and cancer.
Thats why I love glofish as an adult, because its the first step to making the world a better place.
Did anyone else get super excited to see the puppy? I mean, I know this is a fish video, but we’ve seen a lot of Reno, so it’s nice to meet the puppy!
I have a gorgeous opal boy that glows all on his own and he’s literally prettier then any glow betta I’ve ever seen
I agree 🙂 The opals are beautiful.
The opals look like tiny white dragons.
I have an opal male too!
lol! nice try!!
I have opal too they still need either 8 to 10 hours of either natrual or artificial light
I'd be more impressed if they engineered live plants to glow.
If something has to glow, let it be a plant.

@Petco why don't you just give each betta a 1 gallon tank when they are on sale. It is better than like 2 ounces of water.
Good video! I honestly just don’t like the look of glo- tanks, they’re really artificial looking and just don’t seem natural, but yours looks hella cool when you turn the blue lights on in the dark. Very cool alternative to glo fish!

Guppy Fish Nerd okay cool I subscribed

Sweet thanks 🙂
I'm sure she loves her plants 🙂
This is such a fantastic betta tank, thanks for taking the high road. Bettas are selectively bred for all types of color variations and features, but the idea of mixing jellyfish DNA with betta fish DNA sounds dangerous. I would rather spend my dollars on a quality betta fish than pay triple price for a lesser-quality betta fish that glows but might suffer from health issues from the added DNA. Bettas like the dimmer lights and I bet it feels so cozy with the black background & substrate. I could see this working for a 20 gallon with a trio of silver mollies. I’d probably get black sand instead of black gravel cause I hate vacuuming gravel and opt for a sponge filter with a low-flow air pump since the Aqueon HOBs aren’t equipped to handle sand.
I’m so happy to see a betta in a 10 gallons
Absolutely!

I love this video. I've been on the fence about glow Bettas and fish. I was considering one just because I feel sorry for the little fellas but buying them feels like it would make the problem worse. But this was a great idea and I truly enjoyed and appreciated it. My grandchildren got a 5 gallon glo tank.. I wish it had been a 10gallon (that's why the tanks been sitting for a month) but it's for a very small space and they don't understand why I don't want to do the whole glo fish thing!! I absolutely love the White bettas and he looked absolutely amazing in your tank!! So today we may take a trip out and see what kind of fun decorations we can find and utilize a few live plants. Ultimately it has to be in the best interest for the little fish and I was excited to see your take on it!! God bless you guys!
Good luck !
I’m a new Betta owner (newbie fish owner in general) for 3 days now and thanks to your channel, he seems to be very happy and healthy. So, thank you tremendously. One problem I’ve run into is I’m afraid he’s bored. Maybe you could do a 10 things to entertain your Betta or something similar? Pennsylvania appreciating and signing out.
Get some of plants and caves. Also get him some friends, contrary to popular belief you can put bettas in with tetras, Cory catfish, ottos, or danios and they will get along fine. For a 10 gallon I would recommend a few ottos in with him or a few tetras to keep him happy and give him some social time.
I actually just got all the stuff to do this exact thing, white opal beta and all because I wanted a more fun neon theme but didn’t want the ‘glow fish’! So glad I saw your video I love how it turned out
The pebbles look like little Easter eggs
That is awesome.. now I do have a glofish tank myself it's a 40 gallon aquarium.. but I also have 2, 60 gallon aquariums and a 55 gallon aquarium.. they all get the same amount of care and love.. I do understand some people not liking the reason behind why glofish are marked.. but I am a well experienced fish keeper. And all my fish are happy and healthy. Love seeing the videos from you guys.
I had never heard of a glow Betta until I watched your livestream last Thursday and although I don’t necessarily have an opinion on glow Tetras, I was appalled by the very thought of glow Betta’s for all of the reasons that Lisa stated. The other reason is because of the huge mistakes I made when I had my very first Betta a couple of years ago because I didn’t know any different, the poor fish couldn’t bare the bright light I had in the tank and spent the entire time hiding behind the filter or heater. I still live with the guilt of that. It’s because of this I cannot think for the life of me why anyone would think it would be a good idea to make Bettas’ glow? I will get bashed for this but I feel the concept is abusive to Betta’s.
I respect your opinion. No bashing here 🙂
I don’t love glow fish either as I worry they won’t be cared for properly but as you mentioned in tank talk live the other night, I do know they are an entry into the hobby. And for many, speaking for myself personally, we found your channel as we tried to problem solve or better understand our own starter tanks. I would love to see you all welcome the glow fish owners. You know, do your very approachable educational style videos that maybe are like “have a glow fish? Want to do more? Want it to thrive?” Rather than making start up fish keepers feel like the made a mistake by even trying the hobby. This tank creation is a great step in that direction. But attracting the starter fish keepers (including the glow keepers) will certainly earn you subscribers, longer term fish keepers and deepen the hobby. Love you guys and all you done for my own personal knowledge, can’t thank you enough!
Well, I still love my Glo-Babies... but I appreciate that you took the high road, and instead of bashing them, and being part of the problem, you actually provided a solution, for those that aren't fans! I may disagree, with people and their glo-hate, but I loved your take, and your tank... and OMG... what a pretty boy? 😍 You, stay awesome, lady! 💙
Thanks Zen. No need to hate. We just need to love our fish and do the right thing by them 🙂
I agree I love my Glo-fish and you can still enjoy glo-fish without using the blue light all the time. I have my glo-fish on white lights for a couple of hours through out the day and then at night I change it to blue for a little before I head to bed. I can say I have never had any fish health problems with my glo-fish either.
@@rootsnwhiskers8351 I actually have my Betta set up in a 10 gallon glow tank as well, he is a beautiful metallic copper dragon scale with a small group of ottocats as his tank mates and a Rosy barb fry(just temporary until its bigger enough that it can't be eaten). My Betta has diamond eyes and is blind and as such is very docile. I have a floating ring for his food and it only took him 3 days to learn that's where he comes to get his food. Even though I know how smart fish are it always amazes me how quick they pick things up.
Yeah most people just say GROW UP but she didnt. I still dont support them and theres things that look similar and better like neon tetras but you know I dont think the unnatural look is cool.
@@anitakennally699 it's not the fish health issues in my opinion because they're just like normal fish that have been genetically modified and sold for children to play with and think of as a toy and for some adults but to me and I'm only 16 I just dont think it's cool to genetically modify fish and then have an unnatural tank. If that makes sense. I have 2 20 gallons and 2 ten gallons. In not a single one would I ever put glofish
My lady works at petsmart, and when they came to her store she already knew I was going to be hopping mad.
We humans genetically modify our animal friends to the point where it hurts them. When I first heard of scientists playing around with the glow effect on fish back in the early 2010s, it made me sad. What is the point of this? For fun? A gimmick? Why? Oh God why?
Everything I go to her store the glow bettas are always stocked, so I don't think they are selling. Good. Even my lady thought this was going too far. She usually would refer the customers to other bettas. We got to stop playing with nature and just appreciate what we have already. I mean... look at the bettas we have already. They are gorgeous!
By the way, your tank came out absolutely beautiful. This is such an amazing alternative of the glow tanks. It gives it a mysterious vibe to it instead of that weird, ultra neon blinding setting. I feel this will make the betta feel comfortable. Something about having a black light shine on your eyes seems just... uncomfortable. This though? Reminds me of a soft moon light night. Gorgeous.
I saw the glow bettas in store the first day they came out by coincidence, didnt buy one though but they were flying off the shelves. However, I went back to see them about two weeks after and it's already just another standard betta situation. Bettas sit there for days or weeks without being sold, eventually dying to the conditions. I knew it would happen, the jacked up 10-30 dollar price for one turns people away, even me, and now they're gonna suffer. The ones with red fins in particular are the ones suffering the most since no one gets those due to the non glow red it has. Hopefully the craze dies down and the production gets reduced. We've got too many normal bettas suffering already, dont think we need a huge two week eye appear for children and people of interest. Good video though, the white opal looks like a blue glow betta in the lights. Good choice in music too!
I love those colors together in that tank. Not really liking the rocks. They make me think of Easter eggs and Easter and fish don't really go together. But still looks really good.
I have a baby glow betta I love her, and the glow fish company was actually just trying to help detect early signs of water pollution, so I don’t think that’s that bad even though it failed and just became pets instead, there are much worse things that people do to animals than just adding a harmless genetic to them I think, but I don’t know that’s just my opinion
Yes but that's the thing. No on should be doing anything to animals. They should be left the way they are....naturally.
If we leave them as they are naturally, there would be no albinos, longfins, or most of the recognised strains we have today, including the white betta in this video.
Pendlera Exactly, and people don’t criticize those type of selective breeding, but when it Hass to do with helping the environment they want to get all controversial with it and say it’s not a good thing, the glow fish project never actually help detect water pollution because it didn’t go as planned, but I admire the fact that they were at least attempting to help the environment, and now we have beautiful pets to show for it, so even if it didn’t go as planned they were Still trying to help, and I don’t think that’s something that should be criticized
Karebear's Animal House if we just left animals the way they were, we wouldn’t have pets we love today, including all types of dogs, cats, and all different color varieties of pets, also there have been cases were selective breeding has helped save endangered species, is that not something that should be done? Like I said, there are worse things people do to animals that deserve to be criticized Instead of people Wasting their time criticizing harmless projects that were supposed to help the environment
@@pendlera2959 they dont get them that way through selective breeding? I just know with glo fish they would inject them. That's the only thing I feel bad about. I see them in pet stores and they always look sick. So I get concerned. But I have not fully researched this subject... just what I heard. So if I'm misinformed , sorry about that.
I just dont like when they "make " animals a certain way that is not natural.
Great video, However, Blue light is not UV light, which is what those decoration are made to "Glow" under. Maybe you meant to be saying "Black Light" like in the 60's or 70's instead of Blue. In any case I agree, I don't like Glow fish, and I also bought a White Pearl Beta last week and is happy in his 20 long, with some guppies.
Really nice tank, Lisa. I can take them or leave them as far as Glo-fish go, there's enough beauty naturally in so many fish. At the same time, if Glo-fish are what a person loves and they do their job taking care of them, well, that's fine too. Just keep the government out of it. Being responsible pet owners and fish keepers is what's important and you and John do a great job of teaching us how to do just that - thank you💕👍😊

Not one comment I read mentions this but Java ferns rot when you plant them into the substrate, they need to either be attached to or placed into nocks and cranes of rocks and driftwood.

I had one, it was so sad and it barely did anything. Recently, it died.. but I got a normal one, and this ones so much happier. Glow fish just seems sad.
Apparently Glofish said that the way they make their betta fish “glo” doesn’t affect them in anyway. Well I was in petsmart today and they were 6 glo bettas. None of them were really swimming. They sort of just “sat” in their small containers. The first 3 looked really sick in general, another one probably had dropsy, but the last 2 looked the worst. One of them only had one eye and the other had a severely crooked back. I gently moved around the container of the on with the crooked back to see if they could swim, but all it could do is wiggle around at the bottom. I don’t understand why people think this type of abuse is okay and the fact that petsmart/petco is allowing this. (Not to mention the other sick bettas and other fish there were, how they abuse their other animals, and the fact that petsmart/petco get their animals from mills). Anyway, that’s why I’m refusing to shop there lol.
None of the bettas ever look good in their cups at petco.

I just got a koi betta yesterday and he has the best eyes I’ve ever seen on a fish, they are an icy blue color and I compliments the white and red on him.
Odd question, I just want to be sure because the last thing I'd want to do is stress my fish. While I prefer natural tanks myself, my daughter might enjoy a tank like this. Would all those bright colors ever stress a male betta out? I know it's not another fish/betta, but curious if anyone has ever had their betta flare up a lot at bright, colorful decorations.
It's a pretty tank, though! And beautiful fish. Keep us updated! How is the sorority going?
No as long as you don’t have a harsh black light it will not stress out your betta. Also you can put tetras or danios in with bettas (as long as you have a 10 gallon) they won’t harm eachother at all.
I loved the intro with the different logo! I was also wondering about the java fern because I thought wasn't supposed to be planted in the substrate and it was supposed to be glued or held to a decoration or rock. I am fairly new to keeping plants sorry!
Thank you Jack! You're correct about the fern but for some reason it works well for me either way. It's such an easy beginner plant.
I was honestly horrified when I saw those glow bettas. Ridiculous. Those poor fish.
People just don’t know.
Which is sad that pet stores will sell anything to make a buck. I just shook my head and walked away from it.
I have a Male betta fish and he lives in a 3gallon tank I am trying to get him a 10 gallon tank
At least you are trying and working to fix your betta home! That shows that you really care about him.
While I personally don't feel the want to have any type of GloFish, I don't care if other people have them. So long as they're properly cared for. Which is why I was, and still am on the fence about GloBettas. Bettas are already so misunderstood and mistreated, I only see them becoming even more so now that they 'glow'. Plenty of people in my fish groups say that the new tanks that have been released with the bettas aren't any smaller than 3 gallons. Which is good, but I know that there are still smaller sized Glo tanks available. I've also read that the individual price of the Globettas is around $20. Which I'm sure will dissuade some people from buying them.
But really, when it comes to making sure that bettas, and all other animals sold in the lottery industry are not abused, the pet industry needs a huge makeover. Anyway, that's just my two cents. I LOVE the tank that you set up, Lisa! The only way that I'd ever seriously consider getting a Globetta is if they come out with a purple one...
This is the perfect alternative to that other sorcery!! I wanted a funky little 80’s throw back tank for my office and this is it!!! Thank you!!!
I'm with you I don't like the glow fish but like the glow tank I did the same with a 20g
Here in England we don't have a choice as they are illegal. Have to say though that this tank looks amazing, and will make a nice alternative in my fish room. Thanks Lisa xx
They are illegalV
They are illegal?

Yes, you cannot breed or import them.
Absolutely agree with you !!! Glo betta should not be taken as the norm & constantly
holding him in ultraviolet light.
He just needs a trio of albino cories for some tankmates.
Antonio Margallo haha yes
nice idea, but they need to be in a group of six, and need to be in a 20g
@@skellaberry I've got a trio in my 29 and they're doing well enough that they bred. 6 is best but a trio is fine
@@skellaberry I know, but three or four is quite alright if all other parameters are good. I have 2 albinos and two bronze cories and they bred.
3 Nerite snails and a catfish or 2 or maybe 6 tetra preferably ember , other Tetra might be tail nippers?
honestly I really like the glo fish. I like shiny things and the single colour on them is just really pretty. I get that a lot of fish have beautiful natural colours (I have really pretty natural fish!) But glo fish just appeal a lot too. Especially the pink ones!
They dont really deserve all the hate they get, theyre still a living creature and deserve love too. Even if its just a minority that loves them.
This video was so helpful. I love glo fish but I can understand why some people don’t and I respect that. So this is an excellent idea for people who love the idea of glo fish but want an alternative that is just as cool looking. I will be using this video as reference so now I can finally go buy a tank and get everything I need to set up and cycle it for my new fish. We don’t have glo bettas in Ontario yet anyway so I’m so happy I found your channel. Thank you so much!
Why do you love them? We dont have them here in denmark nor iceland, i have never seen the, in europe, Injecting weird things into things is apparently very american now, from fish to the trump
@@8rynjar The thing about glofish is that they weren't originally made to sell to kids.
Also glofish have been round sence 2003, back when everyone loved trump and watched his TV show.
@@8rynjar they don’t inject things into them. They are bred with dna to be that way.
@@johnschwalb stop copy and pasting your replies.
People don’t like them because the company themselves is extremely corrupt and also because they are marketed to kids who don’t know anything about proper fish care.
One thing I noticed is no one is talking about putting something towards the top of the aquarium so the betta can rest or sleep on. when I bought one of the leaves that has a suction cup on it to stick to the side of the glass my betta(Mr. Finnly) right away hopped on it and that's where he slept. In their natural habitat, they live in shallow water(rivers ) and like to be able to rest close to the surface.
I enjoy both aspects of the hobby although I've only owned one glow fish I still think that it's perfectly fine to enjoy these glow fish and from what I've observed the additives do not shorten life span, quality of life, or the ability to reproduce so ya a glow fish is ok from time to time and I realise these fish are targeted at children but no matter what age we are we need to be educated about the pets we keep
That’s true! But I still don’t like any fish being marketed to children and I personally prefer natural looking fish. The glofish look plastic to me.
Also many glofish are sterile so only the company can make money off of selling them.
I have a white opal, he looks amazing under different colored LEDs.. he also picks up the different tones of rocks and gravel as the light reflects.. no glow lights or plastic needed. Just get any type of silver/white fish (doesn't have to be a betta) and some LED accent lights to put around the tank at night.
Can java fern be planted directly into substrate I always thought it had to be attached to rocks or wood like anubius
It really depends on your skill level and the amount of work you’re willing to do to maintain it.
I like it! We don’t have glow bettas up here yet, I will be trying to sell this set up in tanks for sure!
4:16 your Chihuahua is SO CUTE 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you for showing a beautiful alternative to a glow betta. I'm so against glow fish/betta in this hobby. But I did get a glow betta set up for my stepdaughter but went with a pink orchid male with it and with the white and pink reflects the light beautifully 😊
Personally I have mixed feelings with glow fish in general (I never knew that glow betas were a thing until now) but whenever I pass them in the pet smart I always go to I make it a point to stop and talk to the fish (all the fish) Watching this made me miss my two betas... Streamer and Treasure were their names... I had Streamer for about two years before he passed away (old age) and I had Tresure for less then a year before he swam up to heaven (got sick and I couldn’t figure out what to do to help him)... I hope my two blue gems (Streamer was a beautiful sapphire blue and Tresure was a gorgeous aquamarine) are happy up there with the three goldfish I’ve lost... Spot, Stripe, & Yin-Yang ☯️ and I kind of want to get another beta now that I have inspiration for what to do with my old 20 gallon tank that’s been sitting unused in my garage for about two years now... (my 3 current goldfish are scarily close to out growing their 60 gallon tank... I don’t have a pond and can’t put one in because no space and not enough money and I got them the biggest tank I could fit in my house!)
Hi! Not hating but bettas live for 5-10 years. If you had a betta die at the age of 2 he didn’t die of old age. Did you have a heater and a filter?
I’ve had already two baby boy glo bettas die on me. One from blindness and not being able to find food, the other from a sickness he brought with him (quarantine everyone!) and now I got a female a couple days ago because she was one of 8 bettas at my Petsmart. Literally there were no others. And all the glo bettas were either clamped, or sick and dying. All but her. So she came home with me and is doing fantastic. She has a naturalistic 5.5 gallon tank with tannins, live plants, and driftwood. Of course a filter and heater. She also has just a plain white light. I don’t care for the blue ones. She’s thriving. I honestly didn’t care if she was normal or a glo betta. They’re all the same to me. She’s a happy little chunker. I’m not against glo fish of any kind, but the genetics of these glo bettas seem to be even less than the normal bettas. And that’s what sucks. It’s 50/50 weather or not you get a blind one or sick one. It doesn’t help people put them in tiny uncycled tanks with sharp glo decor and painted items. I know mine much prefer live over anything else. I use silk sometimes too. They don’t mind. But either way. Nothing wrong with glo fish, I do like how you have an alternative. Just not a fan of all the sharp plants you put in a betta tank. Especially one with big fins. It sucks you’re advocating for an alternative when in reality it’s just the same thing a normal glo betta would go through. There’s no difference here. Whether liked or not. I can imagine this white male will have ripped up fins from those plants in no time. They glow just as much in normal conditions as in this kind.
I'm with you guys, I don't support the breeding of glow fish of any kind. You made an amazing job with that aquarium, and most important of all: I fell in love with your dog.
I almost picked one up yesterday but found a beautiful sweet little red female who was super low on water an wasnt looking too good instead. Now she has her own 2.5 gallon tank with a small planko an some live plants too get used too right now. ♡♡♡
2.5 gallons is too small. Get a 5 gallon and make sure you have a heater and a filter.
@@abigailnelson6623 2.5 gallons is the minimum for bettas. She had a sponge filter an a heater.
I agree with you I'm not a fan of GloFish but the white betta in the tank set it off just right
Thank you 🙂
I am not a fan of GMO fish, so thank you so much for showing this alternative. The finished product looks great. 👍
Thank you 🙂
Hey Lisa
@@Vanny-wx8ok Are you talking to me(my nickname is Lisa) or KG Lisa?
No
He looks so much nicer than the GLOfish Bettas! Thank you for showing people there are other options.
I have a female glow betta named Rhyme and I love her, she is super sassy and active!
I don't like glow decor but she looks great with just plants, gravel, and her coconut.
Some people have said they are blind but for sure mine is just fine as she jumps for dangled food and loves following things near her tank.
I bought her because I liked her personality, the glow is cool but I would have grabbed even the plainest VT if it was like her
Nothing wrong with java fern. The deservedly esteemed Takashi Amano made frequent use of it. Great choice. And what a nice way to subtly discourage glo fish.
Love this video. I was actually just at Petco and an employee told me she hasn’t seen a “Globetta” survive to adulthood. They just don’t seem very healthy at all.
Being that it's petco its not like any of their bettas are taken care of well.
Glofish are not my aesthetic but I really like that tank decor. I always go with a more natural look but maybe I should rethink that.
I find nothing wrong with the Glow Fish, they're a step beyond some of the breeding changes with fish like Goldfish that create things.
The tank looks good, but it doesn't seem to have the bright glow that the glow fish have. You have a more eerie glow which is interesting on its own.
And Glow Fish kind of hit the same thing as other "alien environment" looking fish have with me even though they aren't altered and bred for it like the glow fish are. One of the more interesting fish that I've seen are the blind cave tetras, a friend had a tank of them for a long while and I keep wanting to have a tank of them at some point.
Glow Fish are also something that is attractive to younger kids in just looking cool for them. They attract a lot of attention from someone glancing around because they look so different.
My first experience with them was actually before the general release of the Glow Fish in stores, I was available to help one of the teachers that I'd had in High School pick up and set up a tank of them long after I'd graduated, but I was in the area and my Mother worked at the school, so I'd gotten recruited to help set it up after bringing my mom lunch...they attracted a lot of constant attention unlike even the piranha tank a classmate I'd had got (My Tiger Barbs only got a few people watching at the time).
For some background, in Biology, you could have a small animal that you brought in and cared for in the room for a constant extra credit situation, and the teacher had a few animals of his own that were always there during the year.
The glow tank was one that had a lot of people looking at it, partially because you could easily see the fish from across the room...
The issue that I have with the Glow Bettas is that they are not well bred and they seem to not be doing well in pet stores, even those who care really well for their fish. I went to four stores to check them out and in each over half of the fish were dead or clearly dying, even though their standard bettas looked fine. Then there are all of the reports of the Glow Bettas having eyesight issues, up to and including many reports of the fish being entirely blind. I would have no issue if they were breeding and sending out happy, healthy fish that just so happened to glow, but that isn't what the reality appears to be.
True but I just think they look plastic and cheap
@@abigailnelson6623 Some of them do, I just find them more interesting from a scientific side of things. First time I saw some in person was when I'd been asked by my old JR High science teacher to help set up a tank of them for his classroom when he was setting things up for the year.
He always had a lot of things in the room with various animals...mainly because the school had been a combined Jr/Sr high and he ended up with the short straw to end up teaching 7th and 8th grade when they split them the year before I'd started there and he missed the bio and anatomy classes...but that was fun to go back to the building after several years and hear him go on about the genetics for the things.
Hi Lisa, it’s about time you did a video without John slowing you down😂. I have Ben keeping fish for 25 years but never a betta. I now am thinking about getting one thanks to you. They are pretty cool fish. You should throw some albino Cory cats in there. They would match the betta!
Yes! That’s a good idea you’d have to do frequent water changes with a tank that small though.
Great video. Not a fan of glofish myself. Your tank looks great. I know you don't put fish in an uncycled tank from your other videos. Did you use precycled media or something like that on this tank? I have to move some tanks and just curious how you quick cycled this tank.
Thankfully, fish which have been modified like Glow fish are illegal in Sweden!
I wish the US would stop the genetically modified crap. Americans probably glow under a black light too considering how much Genetically Modified food we all consome over here! Lol I've never been a fan of glow anything. They all look cheap to me.
In Germany too. Is it because it's considered animal cruelty in Sweden too?
@@gammelfleischparty9066 yes I believe so, I think fish are beautiful the way they are anyway, no need to modify them.
@@xWolvesCreedx i agree. Humans have done enough. There are so many breedings nowadays, no need to make them glow..
@@andystokes8702 never saw them in my country, not even online. Maybe could ship them from the us.
But i don't know if they would pass the borders if my parcel would be checked.
But i don't want to try. They are illegal for a good reason.
I work at a Petco and these Glowfish NEVER sell we will also likely discontinuing them. But thanks for doing this video it really shows all you can do at our stores.
Thanks for doing these videos. We intentionally avoid glofish. We don't judge the fish stores that sell them, since they have to make money, but I can do my part and not demand them with my dollars. Natural fish are beautiful as-is!
I have basically this kind of setup! I went a little less hard with the glo-decorations, I have the black-with-fruity-pebbles substrate and a pair of moonrock looking hides that luminesce faintly, the glo lights with neon silicone seals on the tank itself and a black background, plus a platinum white betta boy! he's definitely main stage in his setup, faintly glows in his own right, it's nice. I added a background curtain of anarchis to help with the water quality and give him something to lounge in and it's growing wildly now, to the point where I'll probably have to transplant 2/3rds of it into my soon to be second setup that'll be more natural themed.
Huge betta fan here, have bred them several times over the many years in the hobby. NOT a fan of glow fish, prefer my decor of my display tanks to be natural strats / colors.... But this is a GREAT Way to get a little kid (or any person) interested in this wonderful hobby with out have to subject the poor fish to possible poisoning by being created into a glowfish!!! Great job!
Glofish glow genetically. They are born, not created
@@kateg9437 Scientists created the GloFish by inserting fluorescent genes from jellyfish and sea anemones into the eggs of a silver and black zebra danio, a tropical fish from India. The fish was designed to help scientists determine when waterways were contaminated. If they glowed, it meant there were pollutants in the water.
@@UncleLarryB52405 yeah, but now they glow all the time. The process is done on eggs/embryos, not grown fish. As it is genetic, it is also passed on to the offspring, and you are unlikely to buy a first generation glofish.
Thank you for doing this video. I don't like glowfish either and this is a wonderful idea! Very nice results and I feel inspired.

I'm a fan of glofish but not so much of the globetta cuz I think those are already beautiful as they are. Plus they already don't get treated right. I do have some glofish tetra.
This is why I subscribed to you guys the knowledge and experience really shows and I must say you nailed it with that tank. there are endless possibilities on ways to do that. even tho the glo fish are Kool looking I'm not a fan either I don't like that people create animals. it's just wrong and it makes me sick that man tries to play god. betas are gorgeous fish by themselves imo, Great job on providing a better way to achieve this awesome job I freaking love you guys I do not keep betas but I always look at them, thanks a lot for the vid keep em comin.
I personally am grateful for the emergence of globetta. As someone who works in a corporate pet store, I am constantly having to explain that the 2.5 to 5 gallon glofish tanks(WITH PICTURES OF GLOFISH ON THEM) are not actually suitable for glofish. Now I can direct them to a globetta instead, providing an alternative instead of dealing with a frustrated mom asking why we would sell a tank for glofish that you can’t actually put glofish in.
Yes! I was just telling my daughter we should do it like this instead of with a glo betta!!
That's awesome 🙂 there was a little girl and her mother at Petco that were picking out her first betta and tank. I asked her to help me with the decorations for mine 😊
That’s so good! I love children getting into the hobby as long as they know how to properly take care of the fish.
Wow. Today i saw glow bettas at petco (which was my first time seeing or even hearing about glow bettas) and then this pops up on my recommendation.
I’m on your side Lisa. That tank looks good.
Thanks so much Scott 🙂
Nice job lisa i just bought the same tank one week ago i just started my fish hobby thank to you guys i been watching your video you help me alot with my fish choice thanks again by the way i ive in odessa texas
I’m in the UK and I love you guys, your advice is spot on, can you do a video about detritus worms and pest snails? I have a problem at the moment with my tanks which may be over feeding but would love some insight, the worst tank is my 120g which is currently cycling. Can’t wait for the next video!
This is very nice. That betta is beautiful! I have a betta in a 5 gallon tank. How many live plants can I put in a 5 gallon? How do you take care of the plants? How do you keep all of those items in the tank from getting covered in gunk/algae? Shouldn't you at least rinse out a new tank and the gravel before setting it up for the first time? Just curious.
I’d say only one or two live plants. Also you don’t HAVE to rinse the gravel if you are okay with your water being cloudy for a few hours.
I was at a Petco here and saw glo Bettas for the first time. All of them looked sick and near death. I didn't like that.
Isn't that all betta in those little cups?
That’s so true! Glad my fish store (locally owned!!) doesn’t sell them at all. They also have their bettas in actual filtered tanks!
I'm not a fan of an unnatural looking tank setup myself but not opposed to those who like it (to each their own). That said, your betta does look nice under the blue light. As far as glofish go, I feel if the fish is not compromised in "any" way...health, longevity, internal or external issues, etc...and it acts & functions as a normal betta except for the glo factor, then it is okay with me. I personally am not interested in betta splendens, though they are pretty. I used to raise them but have wild bettas now.
Most globettas are blind, they can not reproduce and they do not live as long as regular ones.
So nice of John to sit on his duff with the dog while you do all the work. Just kidding, lol. You guys are a great team.
Great job! I saw a glow betta at PetSmart just the other day. Not near as pretty as the regular bettas, if you can call a betta regular. I will have to admit my daughter who is 6 does have some glow tetras in her 40 gallon tank that she picked out, but she has had the tank since she was 2 and they have been doing great.
Well small glofish are okay but for some reason the bigger the glofish the more problems it has. I have no idea why but the glo bettas have tons of problems.
I always hated the idea of glow bettas just because it's obviously aimed at kids
I was kindve put off when I saw you use a net, though

I actually love glow fish because even without a blue light they add amazing color to a community tank. However that said I hate glow betta because they are taking away the natural color that makes betta so wonderful. I love this setup and that opal is way more beautiful than any glow betta
The thing is, domestic bettas aren't natural either. They're both genetically modified.
@@miyukiwynter885 yes but they are so colorful and beautiful
Also they are marketed to kids which isnt okay. And the company sells betta kits which are only one gallon tanks.
All the glow bettas (and most glow fish) are blind.. really saddens me to see them bumping around all because someone wanted it to be neon colored
Add in some 24K gold shrimp!! They look amazing under a blue light as well.
In Kansas, they just started selling Glow-Bettas. I’m not impressed with the ones the stores have thus far, but LOVE them here!!!
